Gibran Hamdan Retires From Professional Football

Toronto Argonauts quarterback Gibran Hamdan announced his retirement from professional football on Friday, David Naylor of the Globe & Mail reports.

"I’ve found myself that past two days just reflecting on the kind of dedication and hard work it takes to be a professional quarterback," the 29-year old Hamdan said. "When I got home at night I looked at myself and said 'I don’t have what this team needs in terms of commitment.' It’s not fair to the fans, the coaches and myself to go on. I don’t think you can do it half way. I have too much respect for the game, my teammates and everyone involved to do that.

"Training camp is a difficult time when you’re not coming in with the rigor or juice you had as a young kid," Hamdan said. "It definitely caught me by surprise. I know myself pretty well and when you’re honest with yourself and others, when something doesn’t feel right you know right away. For two days it didn’t feel right.

"I’m retiring from all pro football," said Hamdan, who plans to retire to his Minnesota home and may pursue a career in broadcasting. "It just happens I was in the CFL when I made this decision. You won’t see my popping up anywhere else."

A seventh-round pick (232nd overall) out of Indiana University by the Washington Redskins in 2003, Hamdan had stints with the Seattle Seahawks (2005-06), San Francisco 49ers (2006), Miami Dolphins (2007) and was mostly recently the third-string quarterback with the Buffalo Bills from 2007-09.

Hamdan attempted just two passes in the NFL, both with the Redskins during the 2003 regular season finale.

Hamdan was part of a quarterback competition in Toronto that included fellow former NFLers Ken Dorsey, Dalton Bell, and Cleo Lemon.
