Spags: Rams Have "Tackles"

he projected starting St. Louis Rams offensive line had 2009 first-round pick Jason Smith at left tackle, with 2010 second-round pick Rodger Saffold playing on the right side.

After Saffold signed his contract on Wednesday, Rams offensive line coach Steve Loney said that Saffold will work at right tackle.

Technically Loney's right, but Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo says the Rams have "tackles", and Smith and Saffold will play both sides during training camp before a determination will be made as to who starts where on September 12 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Smith may have a contract that guarantees him $33M, but Saffold (6-5, 316) has the size, strength and athleticism to protect the blindside effectively in the NFL. Considering the substantial financial investment that's about to made on quarterback Sam Bradford, it only makes sense to disregard the draft status and contracts of the tackles, and let the best-equipped player protect Bradford's blindside.
