Redskins, Titans Re-Visit Haynesworth Trade

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the Washington Redskins and Tennessee Titans have re-visited trade talks involving defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth.

Mort adds that there's no deal yet.

In April, the Titans were rumored to be interested in re-acquiring Haynesworth when it appeared he could be had for a bargain-basement price after the Redskins paid his $21 million signing bonus on April 1. Reports at the time were that the Titans were willing to part with a 2010 third-round pick, but no deal took place and Titans head coach Jeff Fisher denied interest.

Haynesworth was the Titans' first-round pick in 2002, and in seven seasons, totaled 271 tackles, 23.5 quarterbacks, and two Pro Bowls before signing a seven-year, $100 million contract, which included $41 million in guarantees, with the Redskins in 2009.

Washington has not been willing to just cut Haynesworth, and would look to recoup at least $16 million from Haynesworth to trade or release him.

Haynesworth famously failed head coach Mike Shanahana's conditioning test at the beginning of training camp, which kept him from practicing during the first week of camp. When he did pass the test, Haynesworth worked with the second-team defense, playing into the fourth quarter of the final two pre-season contests.

Reports out of D.C. have been that Haynesworth's performance in those games was so poor, some on the coaching staff felt that Haynesworth could be inactive for the regular season-opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.

Yesterday, head coach Mike Shanahan and defensive coordinator Jim Haslett spoke positively of Haynesworth, which may be an attempt to increase his trade value after spending much of the last month trying to kill it.

A return to Tennessee, where he'd be back to playing the role of disruptive 4-3 tackle, would be good for all parties involved. Haynesworth just has to cut a $16 million check to make it happen.
