Redskins Sign Three Undrafted Free Agents

The Washington Redskins have signed three undrafted free agents, Rick Maese of the Washington Post reports.

Signed on Monday were wide receivers Brandon Banks and Shay Hodge, along with cornerback Melvin Stephenson.

Banks is a 5-7, 150-pound receiver/return specialist who played two seasons at Kansas State. Banks caught 123 passes for 1,754 yards and 10 touchdowns, leading the Wildcats in receiving in both of his seasons. Banks also ran for 236 yards and a touchdown, averaged 9.7 yards on 22 punt returns, and 28.5 yards on 57 kick returns, five of which he returned for touchdowns.

An All-Big 12 selection for his return ability, Banks was named the conference's Special Teams Player of the Year. Banks ran a 4.37-second time in the 40-yard dash at the Combine, but due to his lack of size and a December arrest for battery, was not selected in last month's draft.

Hodge (6-1, 207) caught 173 passes for school-record 2,646 yards and 22 touchdowns during a 50-game career at the University of Mississippi. Hodge had agreed to terms with the San Francisco 49ers after being passed over in the 2010 NFL Draft, but was released shortly thereafter.

Stephenson is a 5-10, 190-pound cornerback from UTEP.

Voted a special teams captain in 2009, Stephenson started the last two seasons at left cornerback, after spending his early career as a back-up and part-time starter on the right side. Stephenson tallied 158 tackles and 4 interceptions during his career, returning one for a touchdown last season.

Stephenson tried out for the Redskins during their post-draft mini-camp.
