NFL To Propose 18-Game Regular Season Schedule
By admin
During a press conference at today's owner's meeting in Atlanta, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the league will propose an 18-game regular season schedule to the players' union.
Goodell said support among the owners for the "enhanced" regular season was "overwhelming", and that the union will receive their proposal "rather quickly".
"We think we've moved this concept along," Goodell said, according to Mark Maske of the Washington Post. "There's a tremendous amount of momentum for it. We think it's the right step to take. But we want to do that with our partners, including the players."
There are plenty of details to iron out, including fewer off-season workouts, increasing roster sizes, changes to how the league handles its injured lists, and increased medical coverage for former players in the years after they depart the league.
All that remains clear right now is in order to add two regular season games, the NFL will cut the pre-season in half, providing NFL coaches and talent evaluators with less time to evaluate players on the fringe of NFL rosters.
While owners may overwhelmingly support the opportunity to fill their stadiums with paying customers one additional time per season--pre-season games are sparsely attended resulting in lesser concessions/parking revenue--coaches and personnel executives might not see how this "enhances" the ability to do their jobs effectively.
