Metrodome Installing New Playing Surface

The Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission is paying $450,000 to replace the playing surface at the Metrodome.

The Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission is paying $450,000 to replace the playing surface at the Metrodome, Judd Zulgad of the Star Tribune reports.

FieldTurf had been used for the last six seasons, but the Minnesota Vikings pushed the commission to install a SportExe Momentum 51, the latest in Shaw Industries' line of synthetic playing surfaces.

The SportExe Momentum 51 surface was installed earlier this year at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, home of the Baltimore Ravens, with an installation cost of $1 million dollars.

Minnesota's resurfacing project began this week, and is expected to be complete when the Vikings open up their 2010 pre-season home schedule against the Seattle Seahawks on August 28.
