Lions Sign LB Bobby Carpenter

The Detroit Lions have signed free agent linebacker Bobby Carpenter, Howard Balzer of The SportsXchange reports.

Terms were not disclosed.

Carpenter (6-2, 248) was a first-round pick (18th overall) out of Ohio State by the Dallas Cowboys in 2006. After four seasons in Dallas, Carpenter was traded to the St. Louis Rams for offensive tackle Alex Barron, but did not make the Rams' 53-man roster.

Signed by the Miami Dolphins in September, Carpenter made 10 tackles as part of the Dolphins' special teams units and as a linebacker in nickel packages. The Dolphins released Carpenter on Monday.

In 63 career games, Carpenter has posted 106 tackles and 3.5 quarterback sacks, with 45 of his tackles coming on special teams.
