Lions Claim K Justin Medlock Off Waivers

Free agent kicker Justin Medlock, waived by the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, has been claimed off waivers by the Detroit Lions, Michael Schottey reports.

Medlock was a three-time All-Pac 10 during his four years at UCLA, and was drafted in the 5th round (160th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite struggling during the pre-season (3-of-6 on field goal attempts), Medlock made the Chiefs' 53-man roster after Kansas City traded Lawrence Tynes to the New York Giants.

The Chiefs released Medlock after the rookie went 1-for-2 during a season-opening loss to the Houston Texans, replacing him with veteran Dave Rayner.

Medlock spent the 2008 pre-season with the St. Louis Rams, who had signed kicker Josh Brown to a lucrative free agent that off-season. Medlock did not attempt a field goal, but was 1-for-1 on extra point attempts, and had two touchbacks on six kickoffs.

Last season, Medlock handled kicking and punting duties for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League, converting 40-of-46 field goal attempts and averaging 36.7 yards per punt.

The Lions have two "Organized Team Activity" sessions scheduled for next week (June 21-22), which will be followed by a three-day mini-camp. Depending on how Medlock performs next week, the 26-year old kicker could receive an invitation to training camp.

Medlock is signed through 2011 at the minimum base salaries.
