Clausen Has Private Workout With Seahawks

After his 45-minute workout in front of 16 NFL teams, Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen was put through a private, three-hour workout by the Seattle Seahawks, Gil Brandt of NFL.com reports.

The Seahawks contingent on hand included offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates and quarterbacks coach Jedd Fisch.

Seattle has two picks (6th and 14th) in the first-round of the 2010 NFL Draft, and despite having Matt Hasselbeck and Charlie Whitehurst on the roster, may be in the market to draft a quarterback with one of those two picks. Hasselbeck, who turns 35 in September, is signed through 2010 only, while Whitehurst, a restricted free agent the Seahawks acquired in a trade with the San Diego Chargers last month, was signed to a two-year contract.

While the optics of a three-hour workout would indicate that the Seahawks are very interested in Clausen, that may not necessarily be the case.

Clausen is coming off a toe injury, and hasn't been able to work out for NFL scouts. Today was the first chance teams have had to confirm what they've seen from Clausen on tape.

With Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford expected to be chosen by the St. Louis Rams with the first overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Seahawks are the next team in the Top 10 of the draft with a perceived need at the game's most important position. This may prompt QB-needy teams behind the Seahawks, like the Buffalo Bills or Jacksonville Jaguars, to move ahead of the Seahawks to select Clausen.

By putting Clausen through such an lengthy workout, the Seahawks should be able to formulate a solid opinion on him. They'll now know whether or not he has the physical tools to run their offense, and whether or not he has the ability to lead the franchise for the next decade.

Basically, the Seahawks will have to decide whether or not to draft Clausen, or stick with Hasselbeck and Whitehurst until a potentially deeper crop of quarterbacks are available in the draft. This time of year, it's all about teams doing their due diligence before the draft, so it really would've been more surprising if the Seahawks hadn't put Clausen through a three-hour workout.

After his workout with the Seahawks, Clausen is flying to Buffalo to meet with the Bills.
