49ers Claim LB Thaddeus Gibson

The San Francisco 49ers have claimed rookie linebacker Thaddeus Gibson off waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

A fourth-round pick out of Ohio State, Gibson (6-2, 240) was a gameday inactive in each of the Steelers' six games this season before being placed on waivers when the team signed defensive lineman Steve McLendon to the active roster.

Gibson started 23 games at defensive end for the Buckeyes, replacing Vernon Gholston as a starter in 2008. In 35 career games, Gibson totaled 82 tackles, including 25 for a loss and 10 quarterback sacks, and earned second-team All-Big Ten honors after the 2009 season.

Gibson is signed through the 2012 season at league minimum base salaries.
