Why the Packers Will Win and Why They Won't

5 reasons the Packers will beat the Seahawks and a couple reasons why they won't.

Finally, after what seems like an eternity, the start of the NFL regular season is here and for fans of the Green Bay Packers, that means the Seattle Seahawks are coming to town.

This rivalry has really blossomed in recent years and generally has playoff implications. Of course, it’s hard to quantify what this game will mean in Week 1, but there is a good chance it will have some bearing on the playoff race or the race for home-field advantage.

For months, we have all been thinking about and waiting for this game, this afternoon, it will finally be played. With that in mind, here are five reasons why the Packers will win Sunday at Lambeau Field and a couple reasons why they might not.

Why the Packers will win:

Aaron Rodgers --

Naming Aaron Rodgers as a reason why the Packers will win seems like a cop out and maybe it is, but it’s just the truth. For Green Bay to be victorious, Rodgers will need to be the best player on the field and thankfully, he is.

He just needs to play like it. He’s 56-15 at home in regular-season games, with a passer rating of 109.4. He also has a 5-3 career record against Seattle, but has never lost to them at home, even with Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Green Bay Defense --

It might come as a shock to some, but I think the defense has improved. And during Wilson’s career, Dom Caper’s crew has generally been effective at hemming him in, until the fourth quarter that is. The pass rush needs to contain him and the secondary needs to take advantage of the mistakes he inevitably will make. If they can force him into mistakes, as the Packers have done in recent meetings, Green Bay should come out on top.

Lambeau Field --

As Rodgers’ home record proves, the Packers are pretty hard to beat at home. They also haven’t lost a season-opening game since 2012 and Rodgers record in home openers is 9-1, so history is on their side.

Double tight ends --

I have a feeling that the Packers will be using Martellus Bennett and Lance Kendricks a lot against the Seahawks. The attention Seattle will have to pay Jordy Nelson, Davante Adams and Randall Cobb, should open up the middle of the field nicely for Rodgers and he should be quick to take advantage.

Ty Montgomery --

Eddie Lacy is talking about how excited he is to face his old team, well, Montgomery probably wants to prove he can suceed as Lacy's successor. I think he can and if he can prove me right, the Packers will be in good shape.

Why Packers Might Lose:

Seattle is a very good football team. They have talented players, a good quarteback and a good coaching staff. The Seahawks will no doubt be a challenge. The news that starting right tackle Bryan Bulaga will also be out of the game is also not good for the Packers.

With the addition of pass-rusher Sheldon Richardson, the best hope Seattle has of winning in Green Bay is harrassing Rodgers. If they can do that, the Seahawks have real hope of getting a win. Also, if Lacy somehow rushes for 100 yards or so, that seems like a bad omen.

"the best hope Seattle has of winning in Green Bay is harrassing Rodgers"

Reason Packers could win: They're a good team with lots of play makers.

Reason Packers could lose: No quality depth at OT. Bulaga is out. Enough said.

24/7 sports is the only place reporting Bulaga being out. Hell even the source they got this news from (Nagler of Packers News) isn't reporting Bulaga is out. Does that seem strange to anyone else? Especially when you consider 24/7 reported it over 7 hours ago and it's still not on any other Packers site.

Yea that is weird. But I don't think Nagler would have put it out if it wasn't true. Maybe the source was misinformed. But it doesn't seem as solid as usual. Hopefully he was wrong.

Haha. That made me chuckle. Cause I know exactly how you feel. Kickoff is 4 and a half hours a way. But seems so long! Inactives 3 hours away. I haven't seen anything knew. Murphy could surprise. I'd rather him than Spriggs at LT at this point. What worries me is Richardson and Bennett rushing up the middle. Can Taylor, Linsley and Evans hold up?

The D does indeed seem improved, but the proof is in the pudding, we shall see. D needs to step up all season. Here's to a good game and minimal injuries.

Green Bay wins because of their new double TE/Monty based offense.
Seattle wins if Green Bay's defense allows Wilson to make plays, and their ST's fail.

Bulaga better tape that cankle up! We need the best OL we can muster or it's gonna be a long day for AR. Monty has 80 yards or more on the ground and we win. Period.

Packers.com still has Bulaga as questionable. Looks like it will be a game time decision. Either way Packers win.
Thanks, Since '61

They must stay on the gas pedal and not let the Hawks score multiple times. We know we can score and we must losing this one will be very painful.

I hope he does play. I am super worried about protecting Aaron if he doesn't. Might be a day for quick passes to start. Get the ball out. Also Monty needs to get some running room. And win the turnover battle.

Me too Chris, with Evans being new I'd rather have a 80% Bulaga than a 100% Murphy at RT. I think Cobb and Montgomery will be huge in this game. These Seahawk and Patriots fans have already anointed themselves SB Champs along with 70% of the media.

Wilson is turning into our new Cutler, he'll throw us the ball at least 3 times today.

In the wee hours of the morning Ian Rapoport claimed on Twitter that Bulaga was a long shot to play today:

I assume that's the source for the Pack 24/7 report. Rapoport often gets info from player's agents, so unfortunately it's probably legit.

I heard an awful rumor about REDACTED availability for the rest of the year? Don't want to even repeat it, but
anybody? I hope it is nothing...

It's probably just a friend pulling my leg. I may just take that last comment down. Sorry...I'm a bit jumpy today.

OK...I figured it out. The "Nelson" out for the year is Jimmy of the Brewers. A huge blow, but not the way I originally heard it. On an unrelated note, the Rodgers that died was Fred not Aaron. I'm feeling a bit better about today's game.

This is a big game and the Packers are playing at Lambeau. Rodgers and The Packers at home will get it done!

Hunger and determination. Do they have an extra dose this year after recent failures to reach the SB? This game will be telling. I think so. Unlike in the past,i think they are really focused on winning a 1or2 seed. That should show up in consistency of effort, especially on defense.

Here's hoping the Packers take care of business and kick some SeaChicken Butt today and I hope the NFL will dummy up and switch coverage at the scheduled kickoff time to Lambeau so I can watch the WHOLE GAME without waiting for the final seconds of the Eagles Redskins game to end!

I hear you. I live in Los Angeles and go through this EVERY DAMN WEEK the Packers play in the late slot. What I do watch it on the game mix on Sunday Ticket until the early game ends.

Chicago given Atlanta all they can handle.

Lots of good close games so far week one.

For what it's worth TJ Watt is KILLING it. 5 tackles, 2 sacks, and 1 interception. .....Good for T.J

Nick I remember missing the first 6 minutes of last years Packers Seahawks blow out at Lambeau. The Packers I believe scored a TD on their first possession!
