The 2022 Call Sheet: Explosives

Dusty finds 3 explosive pass concepts for the Packers in 2022 and adds them to his call sheet.

Last week we finished up with the down & distance sections of our call sheet, but we still have a few more sections to fill out. This one feels a bit unnecessary to the idea of the call sheet itself, but it gave me a good excuse to review how the Packers generated explosives in 2022, specifically in the passing game.

The Packers generated 78 passing explosive plays in 2022, for an explosive rate of 12.8%. That’s slightly higher than 2019 (11.8%), slightly lower than 2020 (13.5%) and a decent amount lower than 2021 (14.2%). That found them sitting dead in the middle of the league (16th) in terms of explosive rate in the passing game. That put them just a shade below the Falcons (12.9%) and - surprisingly - a shade above the Bengals (12.4%). Not too shabby, seeing as how they had traded away their top WR and had a bunch of young guys learning on the fly. There’s room to improve, of course, but they had a surprisingly respectable showing in 2022.

What I wanted to do with this section is to find an explosive play for each down. Basically, if the offense is feeling a little stagnant and I need a play to jumpstart it a bit, what’s my go-to for that down? (I excluded 4th down from this, because there’s such a small sample size of explosives on 4th down.)

Let's get started.

1st Down

Strike (9 explosives, 28.1 YPA)

The Packers generated 22 explosive passes on 1st down in 2022, and 9 of them (40.9%) were on this concept. That feels as close to a slam dunk as you can get.

The reasoning behind this makes sense. This concept is a constraint play designed to work off of the core Wide Zone rushing concept. When you’re in a neutral down and distance like 1st & 10, teams have to account for both a run and pass. This concept is built around drawing the linebackers up with a playfake, then attacking the space behind them. It’s been a lethal concept for the Packers in 2022, and I expect that to continue in 2023.

2nd Down

Dagger (2 explosives, 25.0 YPA)

The Packers have a handful of variations on this concept that they’ll trot out, so this is kind of an all-encompassing Dagger placeholder. It’s a simple yet powerful two-man concept that can work well with a lot of speed on the field, so I’m hoping for big things for this concept in 2023.

3rd Down

Verts (4 explosives, 23.0 YPA)

This is a play that relies on good chemistry between QB and WR to work, as it needs both of those positions to see the defense in the same way and react accordingly. It has the ability to be an extremely powerful concept when everyone is on the same page. And, while it can certainly lead to some high-difficulty throws, it’s also a concept that can be helped if you have a stable of receivers who are either fast, can separate at the line, or both.

We know the Packers have speed at the receiver position now, so here’s to hoping a couple of those guys expanded their release package over the offseason.

Another great article, Dusty! Thanks.

With these speedy young WRs and TEs, the offense should be more exciting this season. And, I wonder how LaFleur’s call sheet is going to look. Maybe he’s going to crib your call sheet, Dusty!

Thanks for the links, Dusty. Remember to remind us later in preseason so we can start comparing to what's actually happening.

None of those plays with the possible exception of the vert on 3rd seem to require an MVP QB. They're very user friendly. Added together with all the advertised speed and it could be deadly for an opposing D to try to cheat or second guess.

Anything would be an improvement on the predictability we seemed to show these last few seasons.

Honestly, in terms of checking back in on something like this, it's tough to do without a full season, just because the sample sizes can be so small. My thoughts at the moment are to check in every 4 games or so during the regular season and see if there's anything there.
I don't know that looking at preseason is going to give us anything meaningful on this front.

Thanks Dusty.

I just thought it would be cool to compare the plays then, with the different players now to see how the plays are evolving.

Sounds good to me!

I greatly enjoy this whole series you've put together here. I hope MLF wouldn't give away the playbook during preseason ...

Thanks Dusty, interesting that one of your example videos was JLove...

I expect to see a whole new offense this season which will mystify DC's until the midpoint or so and by then I hope that the kids are acclimated enough to allow expansion and deviation from the opening acts.

GPG!

And if JL had enough time against the Eagles' D, the only one that could come close to it would be the 49ers front.

I actually believe the O-line will be an improved model this season so, it's very exciting extrapolate.

I know! I'm getting ahead of the curve of expectations. Can't help myself.

One “boomer” to another, I agree. JB, I hope you go back to see my reply in the handling adversity thread. Pretty funny stuff.

Good, because I agree with everything you said. My Dad worked on all the NASA missions, Mercury, Gemini, Saturn through Apollo. I get it. The guy is still a rock at 93.

It was just a laugh at yourself moment for me, personally. No harm intended, but your message in reply not knowing my context (apologies for that) was great!

Cheers.

Looking so forward to lighting it up with Love executing the real Matt Lafleur offense! Love's 1 qtr vs the Eagles translates into 6,800 yds and 64 td's in 2023! An unvacinated washed up non Ota attending Rodgers won back to back MVP's because of Lafleur's coaching after all!

Try to separate your personal feelings for Rodgers from his ability.

He had his problems on the field last season, but his generational talent will be hard to live up to.

I think the Packers picked a guy that can do it for an unprecedented third time in a row. Two times in a row has just about been the end of the rest of the NFC North.

The nice thing is JL10 doesn't have to be #12, or #4. He can run a good offense, and if he also flashes superstar after a while, great. Hard telling which he'll do that with first, his legs or his arm.

So much of this comes down to our O line, if they dominate they'll make JL look legendary. I hope he only targets long passes that are wide open for a while; zippy little darts that metriculate down the field work just fine :)

Those explosive pass plays we had.....did any of them involve a blown coverage or a poor attempt at a tackle?

I'd love to go out there and count on 5 explosive pass plays in a game, but I think the defense has to cooperate for that to happen. Also, if you're only throwing 35 passes in a game, that means over 30% of our passes are hoping for an explosive play. I think that's going to compromise your ability to stay on the field.

When down, and distance, and game situation are right, go ahead and take your shot. But if you plan on taking a shot on every possession, you're going to have more 3 and outs. IMO, it's better to get a first down or two and take shots from midfield rather than on your own 30 on 3rd and 5 (which, sadly, we did too often last year)

Those long explosive plays are like ice cream. Really tasty, but you can't live on it,

Right!

Only going for it when it's a gimme stretches the opposing defense. Christian Watson can do that on every play and never get targeted and still help quite a bit. It was MVS's role, and #9 is an improvement both in route tree and catch %. Romeo can substitute for him when he's winded, but Bo Melton is faster.
