Packers 35 Washington 18: Game Balls & Lame Calls

The Green Bay Packers will advance to the divisional round and get a rematch with the Arizona Cardinals after a convincing 35-18 road win over the Washington Redskins in their wild card match up on Sunday.  It marks the third season in the last four that Green Bay has won a playoff game.  In today's NFL, that qualifies as sustained success and while they're not championships that many of us feel the Packers should have more of, it's another step in the right direction for this season.  Given what the Packers have gone through this year, winning a road playoff game after ending the season with two-straight losses is a pretty big deal.

After a very slow start and overcoming a 11-0 deficit, the Packers rose up and did something they have not done this season:  dealt with adversity and with their backs to the wall, answered the call to rise up and win a big game.  On this day, both the offense and defense played very well in stretches and the result was a good indication of just how well.  This effort wasn't without noteworthy performances on both sides of the ball so let's get to those who stood out in today's game.

Game Balls

J.C. Tretter

Offensive linemen never get enough credit when they play well and get lambasted when they give up a sack or commit a penalty.  Tretter's day didn't start off well.  He committed a false start penalty that moved the offense back to near its own goal line.  A play later, Tretter gave up a sack that resulted in a safety for the game's first score.  Tretter started at left tackle in place of David Bakhtiari, which was a bit surprising considering that Tretter has not played much tackle at this level.  Earlier this season, Tretter filled in at center for Corey Linsley and has also filled in a guard.  He's more of an interior lineman, despite having come out of college as a left tackle.  Many thought, after the failed experiment with Josh Sitton at left tackle last week, that Green Bay would slide Bryan Bulaga to left tackle and try Tretter on the right side.

Tretter followed up that horrible start with a pretty solid day.  That ended up being the only sack of quarterback Aaron Rodgers on the day.  Washington's pass rush isn't all-world by any means, but they did get after Rodgers at times.  Tretter held up well and stared that adversity that I mentioned earlier square in the face.  Next week against the Cardinals will be a very different story so it will be interesting to see what head coach Mike McCarthy does with his offensive line rotation.

Nick Perry

Perry had two big sacks on the day, including a fourth down play that was Wayne Larrive's famous "dagger" call.  Perry tends to make plays in bunches and big ones at that.  In the biggest game of the year, Perry showed up big.  He's playing for his next contract, at this point.  Green Bay didn't pick up his fifth-year option before the season and with top-tier performances in the postseason, Perry may be pricing himself out of the Packers' range to re-sign him.  After today, it would seemingly be a positive thing if the Packers and Perry can find a way to stay together.

Mike Neal

Neal added two sacks of his own, one of which came just before the two-minute warning in the fourth quarter.  Neal has been an unsung guy on this defense that has played well all year long.  His sack gave the ball back to the Packers and sucked any wind that was left in Washington's sails.

Randall Cobb

I called for Cobb to be a key player in this game if the Packers were to win.  He caught the first touchdown of the day for Green Bay on a nice route and tough fight for the ball in tight coverage.  Cobb would have had another touchdown if Rodgers had put the ball on him after he beat his man downfield.  Cobb also added in some good production out of the backfield.  While I'm not a fan of Cobb as a running back, he gives the defense something else to think about and have to game plan for.  If Rodgers and Cobb stay on the same page, they may find themselves in a lot better place against Arizona than they were last time.

Adam Czech

Our teammate and brother Adam continues his epic battle with colon cancer and no doubt was sending some sound advice through his hospital television set during this game.  Adam had a big surgery this past week and while it wasn't exactly everything we hoped for, it's merely one more step towards the ultimate goal.  Simply put, cancer sucks.  Fight on and know that we're all behind you in your fight!

Lame Calls

Datone Jones

No one really had a rough game so I had to find something to list here.  Jones had a roughing the passer penalty and in today's NFL, those are more mental errors than truly egregious plays.  Jones has to know where he's at and let up on the passer.  The officials are looking for it and there's heavy emphasis on protecting the signal callers.  The penalty came with the game well in hand for the Packers, but Green Bay doesn't want these types of things happening at crucial times in future games.

Fans chanting "You Like That"

Yes, we do like that and thanks for asking!   It's easy to give this a lame call now because Washington didn't emerge victorious and hopefully this phrase goes away now.  Some catch phrases stick and some don't.  This one shall not.

Others to mention:

  • Micah Hyde had a tough day at the office, drawing the assignment of covering tight end Jordan Reed.  Reed had nine catches and over 100 yards receiving.  He's a tough draw for any defensive back and Hyde is not known for his coverage skills.  A tough position to be in so I couldn't really give him a lame call.  Hyde did also drop an interception later in the game, but then again there's a reason why he's not a receiver
  • James Jones led the Packers in receptions and once again, used his savvy to get open along the sideline.  His catch over the middle early in the game was his best of the day, however.  It seemed to provide a big spark to the offense that will hopefully carry on
  • Davante Adams had the touchdown catch and another big catch down the side before he left early in the second half with a knee injury.  Adams says he thinks he avoided a major injury and will use this week to see if he is able to go against the Cardinals.  It was the second week in a row that Adams contributed and made a bigger play.  After being a no show all season long, Adams has stepped up in two very important games for the Packers
  • Aaron Rodgers is smiling and having fun out there.  As a result, he's looking more like who we expect to see every week.  Rodgers and McCarthy appear to be co-existing well and McCarthy is trusting Rodgers to run the offense in the no huddle mode.  All of it led to the best offensive showing since week three
  • Can the defensive backs please get out of each other's way when there's a ball to be picked off?  Not only are they not coming down with it, but they could possibly have gone for a score or two if they're picked cleanly.

On to Arizona.  More tough sledding but you suit up and play who you draw and the Packers should be in a much better place in this game than last time!

Game ball to Brian Bulaga, I didn't hear Kerrigans name called all game, except for an offsides. Bulaga played a great game, didn't hear his name called once.

Game Ball to Casey Hayward. Hayward played an excellent game. I thought he might struggle a little against Jackson in the slot but Jackson wasn't a factor.

Game ball to James Jones. Can we please STOP with the "James Jones Won't Be Here Next Year". I for one hope and pray Jones is here next year. He's been a huge positive for this offense all year, especially for the $$$ he's making.

Don't you have to give Desean Jackson a "Game Ball" for his Boneheaded play in the first quarter! What a F'ing idiot!!!

My prayers are with Adam and his entire family. Keep fighting Adam!!!

With Jordy Nelson (or hopefully some other legit outside receiver) back next year, guys like Cobb and Jones would find the sledding a lot easier than they've seen this season. Remember all those TDs in 2013....

Sorry, Nick, but I think it is well less than 50/50 that JJ is back next year. I surely hope TT takes some action that makes JJ expendable, or that Adams and Abby show enough to give the coaches pause.

Hope all goes well for Adam.

Do you see Jones getting alot faster over the offseason to become a legit outside WR or taking over some ST duties from Abbrederis and Janis? If the answer is "NO" (and it is) he has no place on the team next year. Jordy back as the #1 WR, Adams will put this year behind him and be a legit #3 WR next year. Abbrederis Montgomery should get better and possibly a rookie WR added to the mix.

So tell me where is Jones going to find a role? He fit this year only because Rodgers needed a WR he could trust after Jordy's injury and Jones fit the bill. But there is absolutely no role for Jones next year as a player. Say goodbye James Jones.

Well DS, That's a lot of BS. You're welcome to your opinion. You're also the same guy that said Jones was REDUNDANT, because you wanted to keep Boykin, Remember?? How wrong were you on that?? You don't know a Good WR when you see one. You are a lot of HOT AIR. All you know is what you read, & hear on TV. Jones could make a case for being GB's #1 Receiver this year. Stop trying to be an Expert on this Blog. You piss a lot of Packer fans off, including me. & don't give me that Jones love affair shit. Jones has played every bit a good as Cobb or anyone else. You've got him beat out next year, & it hasn't got here yet. Try being a Packer fan. Without Jones, I doubt Green Bay would be where they are.

I have 3 Game Balls to give out.

#1 goes to the entire offence. I couldn't find anything wrong with any of it.

#2 I would like to give to just the Defensive line, because I've seen things with our secondary that just were not that good, but they held Washington to 18 pt's, so I'm giving it to the entire defence.

#3 I'm giving to my Friend James Jones. I don't have a Crystal Ball. I can't see the future, & I don't pull strings for GB. I think Jones is at this point better than the rest of the Receiving core, whether he's 32 or not. I think he's an asset to GB & would be next year as well. I want to give him a Game Ball every chance I get.

And DS, You can shove that Love Affair stuff UP YOUR ASS.

Going forward this team needs the entire Receiving Core, including Jones, & especially Jones to be Healthy. Adams as well. Bak & Shields also.

What we don't need is someone on this Blog like YOU who thinks he's an Expert on the Packers personnel. Why don't you try spewing your Bullshit on some other Blog., Most GB fans are sick of it here.

James Jones has been very good this year on a depleted and not very deep wide receiver position. If Teddy does his job, I too say James Jones is done in GB. Nothing against him. In fact he could be our mvp on offense. The games I watched this year, all of them, the wide outs pretty much sucked. We could probable let go 2-3 wide outs.Pick your three. I know it wouldn't be Cobb.

BELIEVER, What ever happens, happens? How can you say on the one hand, that JJ's been Very Good & possibly the MVP on offence, & not be willing to at least give him a chance to compete for a position next year. You pick the 2 or 3. As far as I'm concerned, Cobb hasn't played any better than Jones & he was part of that Receiving Core you watched that sucked. For 10 million I might just let Cobb go. Jones is getting minimum.
Which one would you cut??

LVT: Well, I don't foresee GB cutting Cobb based both on his ability and on his $9.75 million dead money cap hit. I am assuming Nelson, Cobb, Adams, Montgomery are locks and Janis (based on STs if nothing else) is a good bet to make the team. JJ and Abby would be #6 and #7 WRs. I can just vaguely see GB keeping 7 WRs. Personally, I'd keep the young and promising (if injury prone) Abby over the old and declining JJ, but I certainly can see the opposing argument - actual production over promise. Both would be cheap.

The above is if TT doesn't draft someone or more unlikely, bring in a FA WR. In 7 of his 11 drafts (63.6%), TT has drafted a WR within the first 3 rounds. In 3 drafts TT did not pick a WR, and in one he took WRs in the 7th round. [In some of these drafts, TT picked a WR high, 2nd or 3rd round, and double dipped with another, like Abby in the 5th after taking Monty in the 3rd, or Bragg in the 6th after taking Terrence Murphy in the 2nd, or Corey Rodgers in the 4th after taking Jennings in the 2nd.]

Should TT draft a guy in the first 3 rounds, that guy is a lock. We'd have to keep 8 WRs to keep everyone. That would mean that Janis, Abby, and JJ would be fighting for #6, #7 and #8 WR spots. Ideally, I'd want 3 WRs who can play outside, and 2 slot WRs. Our outside WRs candidates would be Nelson, Adams, and JJ, with Janis, maybe Abby, maybe-maybe Monty. Slot candidates would be Cobb, Abby, Monty. Nelson can play both at a high level. For these reasons, I'd say keeping JJ is less than 50/50.

Thegreatreynoldo, I don't disagree with you. DS has been consistently running down James Jones, & he's played as well if not better than Cobb, Adams, or anyone else. I don't doubt JJ will be cut next year. It's a young man's game. My point was, based on the year he's had, he should be given a chance to compete for a job, That's all. I'm not the only Packer Fan who likes James Jones.

Keep in mind that DS WANTED TO KEEP BOYKIN instead of James. All I heard was how REDUNDANT James was because we had Boykin. REMEMBER DS. You weren't too Right on that one were you.

I agree that Jones has been a number one WR on this years team and by a wide margin at times. But I also still agree that next season he may be 5th on the depth chart if all are healthy. On the plus side he will have Rodgers trust but on the negatives he will be the oldest and slowest guy out there.

But at this point I certainly don't want to think about next summers camp battles.

First of all you have NO IDEA how Jordy will be next season. We all hope it's the Jordy Nelson of 2014, but he'll be 32, coming off Knee and the Hip Clean Up surgery he had last offseason.

Abby and Monty should be better, hopefully be better next season but if Thompson counted on "Adams to be better" this year and how'd that work out? James Jones could be had for little $$$ and Rodgers trusts him so what's that worth. Watch the Master Card Commercial for your answer.

PRICELESS!!

Hey Nick. I am very certain Jordy will be back next year. ACL injuries are a dime a dozen and the rehab for them is pretty cut and dried. Very few players suffer career altering complications from ACL tears anymore.

I think Adams will put this year behind him and play better in '16, but we do know w/ certainty that Adams showed enough last year that Thompson will definitely bring him back.

Cobb, Montgomery and Abbrederis are the slot WR. Jordy, Adams w/ some of Monty and Abbrederis outside. Janis w/ his SP play is certain to be on the roster and given more time to develop. That's 6 WR already, even if they don't draft a WR. I don't see the Packers keeping 7 WR on the roster. Do you?

Its pretty simple math. Jones is gone. Thompson released him once already and only brought him back due to Jordy's injury. Only chance in a Jordy season ending injury and even then it would be unlikely IMO.

Our best wishes Adam. Get through this just one play at time. If there is a low point after a surgery, hang in there. We're rooting for you.

Good post Jason. Agreed on Trettor at top of list. That was huge.

Agree on your runners up:
JJones made some tough catches. Kuhn key blocks and a key screen recept under heavy pressure. Rollins deserves mention. Crosby (can't underestimate what he is doing, right Vikings?). Clinton-Dix saving a TD.

McCarthy was great yesterday, and this was a game when I found him at his best strategist of the year and had the team ready. Way to go coach. I've been tough on ya this year.

Lame balls; Masthay.... I can't understand a punter that is seemingly choking a punt a game. There just isn't comparison to a place kicker is there? I mean I can see a place kicker going in mental funk, but a punter?

Don't get the "Lame Ball" for Masthay, he punted 4 times for a 44.5 yard averange and a Net average of 44 yards a punt. Actually he had a pretty decent 2nd half of the season and had a Net Average over 40 yards for the season and finished 13th overall.

I'm with you on MM, I've been busting his balls too. I don't know how much input he has when they go to the "Hurry Up", but that's when the offense looked like The Packers! Note to McCarthy, don't listen to QB1 on Challenges! LOL...

Game Balls:

OL, WR's, DL, DB's.

Highlighting the players:
Tretter: deserves a lot of respect after that performance. He started slowly but after he settled in he was just fine. For a guy who can essentially play every position on the OL, he is extremely valuable.

Kuhn: His run blocking has been great. But honestly I would like to see him used a little more in the passing game. When he catches the ball he seems to gain 5 yards every time.

Cobb: Getting him the touches is very important to our offense. I loved to see the Jet sweep with him. That is the type of plays I want to see him get more often.

Nick Perry: When he gets it going, he gets it going. He was flying off the ball, so fast a couple of times I thought it was Mathews coming off the edge. I was very impressed with his explosiveness off the ball. If he can play that way again this week, that will be huge.

Rollins: I hope he can play this week because he is becoming a shut down corner. And a physical tackler.

Lame Calls -
First quarter. The team was just out of sync, and in a funk for pretty much the whole first quarter.
Can't have that type of start against a better Cardinals team.

I hope his confidence is rocketing. I don't care what number that CB is on Washington's roster. We can't forget what Abby has been through.

What was the talk when he was drafted and after the injuries?

Won't last...
Won't be able to get off the line...
Not fast enough...

Blah...Blah...Blah...

Drealyn, I am a big fan of Abby, but that play isn't a good one to illustrate your point. Abby was in the slot, got a free release, and did what he is known for: he ran a great route that got separation. That is why I like him, plus I do think he is plenty fast and quick. Being objective, he hasn't shown to me that he can beat the jam (perhaps due to lack of opportunity) and he has had about the same availability as Nick Perry. That said, he looks like a Nelson clone to me, so I would never keep JJ over Abby going forward.

But he HAS shown it. He just hasn't stacked the success. The entire WR corps has been inconsistent this season.

Also, you can't knock a guy for what the defense failed to do.

On a unrelated front, I would give a Lame call to the Bengals and Burfict/Jones. Total classless play rewarded with an appropriate outcome. This guy was trouble coming out of college and has escalated since then. Don't these guys have to pee into a cup?

When a player on the team says to a journalist that he was expecting Burfict and Jones to cost them a game this year, that says it all..

My biggest question, does Lewis keep his job?

A lot of Packer fans want to get rid of McCarthy who is the 3rd longest tenured Coach behind Lewis. Looking at McCarthy's results compared the Lewis's, is crazy. Lewis is now 0-7 in the playoffs.

Not just a lame call - those 2 should be in a new category 'beyond ugly'. they shouldn't have a place in the NFL. And neither should all their enablers...

Burfict was killing the Steelers all game, he would have been the game MVP if he could have kept his emotions in check. What a child.

.......And theeeeeen the targeting happened. Wow.

We have chance in Arizona. Packers always have the chance. "Packers are nobody's underdog!", I like how Mike McCarthy saying that...

Are the Cardinals the favorite? Of course. Should they be the favorite? Of course! But the NFL playoffs are not a series. The Packers do not have to win the best 4 out of 7 games....not even the best 2 out of 3. They just have to win this one game. And that is always possible. Execute well, don't turn the ball over or make dumb penalties, turn the other team over and put pressure on their offense. Always a chance when you do that.

Redskins CBs gave a 10 yard cushion to our WRs, which I was surprised by. Arizona won't do that.

I hope we re-sign Neal, but not Perry. He's had 4 years to prove himself. Declining the 5th year option was the writing on the wall. The Packers will look at his whole body of work and not be impressed.

A multi-year contract awaits Perry if he is cut. Talent at the OLB position is hard to find.

When Perry is on he is much better than most NFL OLBs. He is also better than Neal. Problem is, he is injured a lot of times, and he is not on that often. But when he is on, like yesterday, then there are hardly any OTs in the league who can block him consistently.

"So what do we do?"

Offer him at TTs price, and when he goes, draft another DE/OLB conversion and hope someone like Jayrone Elliott or Andy Mulumba can hold down the fort until the draft pick learns how to play?

Thats what I mean. Can we afford waiting to train someone new. Need some consistency as well. It was no coincidence that D played much better at end of last year when Neal and Perry were playing and allowing Matthews to move around.

Smells a lot like Jermichael Finley. Is this another guy that you pay for potential? If he would have 1-1/2 to 2 years of high level play (like Clay Matthews) since being drafted, I wouldn't hesitate. To date, he hasn't earned a strong second contract. I might give him a 2 year prove-it at mid range price.

I think we overrate Perry. He is really good at the things he is good at, like setting the edge and bull rushing. Perry had 26 snaps to Neal's 56 snaps against Wash. 351 snaps so far to Neal's 734 snaps this year. Tricky part is that Free Agency occurs in March and we won't know who falls in the draft to us until May. Not clear when we will know about Peppers. My own solution is to offer Perry Neal money, about $5 million/yr, with 25% guaranteed, but front-loaded in roster bonuses - in return for front-loading it, I might allow Perry to void the last yr or put in escalators that an actual starting OLB might reasonably attain. I'd be fine with Razer's 2 year mid range prove it deal as well. Right now Perry is situational guy only.

Adam - hang in there! Game ball to you Jason for mentioning Adam and for keeping us updated.

Game balls: OL for allowing only one sack and clearing the way for 140+ rushing yards.
Aaron Rodgers, after starting 1 of 8 he went 20 for 28 with no picks and looked sharper than he has since before the bye. Also creating 2 penalties that led to a TD. Clinton-Dix for never giving up on the play and keeping Jackson out of the end zone.
Lame calls: 1st quarter offense.

Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Clinton-Dix has completely solidified the safety position. Since he's good in run support like Burnett is, it gives Dom Capers more flexibility. Great draft pick!

How about some props for Joe Whitt Jr., first he has 2 rookies starting and playing at starter levels, when one goes down he has another rookie, Gunther ready to go and when the other goes down he has Goodson (2nd year) ready to go. How many teams could do that ? Gunther showed in the pre-season a great feel for the passing game it was nice to see him contribute on the playoff level. Joe needs a big raise.

I just don't get all the love for Perry. I hear his name so infrequently that every time I see 53 getting off the pile I think it's Paris Lenon! I'd love for him to be the guy, but I just feel like he disappears a LOT.

Love to see Abby keep the ball from the 2-pt conversion. So cute.

Adam gets a game ball for sure.

I gave mccarthy a lame call for leaving tretter on his own on the safety. That ended up being meaningless in the final score but i took it back after i actually saw some effective adjustments during the rest of the game.

So, I'm having this debate with a couple of people now about being on fan pages of other teams.

How is that acceptable? How is this cool?

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see the purpose it serves to be on another team's FAN page if you don't like that team.

Are they fan scouting?
