Lions 34 Packers 20: Game Balls & Lame Calls

Men against boys in the trenches.

You simply have no chance when the other team is physically superior. There are no adjustments you can make when your offensive and defensive lines are being pushed backward and run over. There are no pass plays to call when your receivers are being manhandled and covered like a blanket. There’s nothing a defensive coordinator can do when everybody in the stadium knows the other team is going to run the ball and your players are simply capitulating.

The Green Bay Packers loss to the Detroit Lions Thursday night was purely a case of physical domination. The Lions were in complete control from start to finish. Don’t be deceived by Green Bay’s seventeen second half points. The Packers got nothing they weren’t allowed to get by Detroit. Once ahead 27-3, the Lions just laid back and let the Packers operate in front of them, having full confidence they could flip the switch back on any time they chose.

Which is exactly what they did after Green Bay closed the score to 27-17 early in the fourth quarter. The Lions just rolled up their sleeves and retook the momentum, bullying the Packers for a 14 play, 75 yard drive that took nearly nine minutes off the clock, the lowlight of which was a ridiculous personal foul on Quay Walker for doing a running jump on a field goal attempt.  The resulting first and goal led to the touchdown which put the game out of reach.

Losing this game is not as disturbing to me as the way it was lost. If Jordan Love is missing receivers, which he did, that can be corrected. If receivers are dropping passes, that can be rectified. If the defenders are missing tackles, which they did, that can be worked on. But if your players are simply too soft to compete against the good teams, you have little hope. The Packers have a mini bye to figure out how to brace up their offensive and defensive lines. If those units don’t get more stout, the rest of the team doesn’t matter.

GAME BALLS

I really can’t think of anyone whose performance rose to the level of a game ball. I was going to give one to Quay Walker, who was all over the field making tackles all night, nineteen of them. But his bonehead penalty on the field goal try, which enabled Detroit to take three points off the board and instead gave them the ball first and goal, allowing them to run two more minutes off the clock and then score the touchdown that put the game away, makes it too much of a stretch. Romeo Doubs was a possibility with nine catches for 95 yards, but about half of those were caught in front of a Lions secondary laying back in prevent. No one else stood out.

LAME CALLS

Play Calling

So you get the best player on your offense back from injury, and he doesn’t get a single carry until your team’s fifth series? Aaron Jones doesn’t touch the ball until early in the second quarter? He ends up with five carries and one reception? I understand putting him on a pitch count, but if you can’t use him more than this, then don’t activate him. Either he’s healthy enough to help the team win a game or he’s not.

And it’s quite obvious opponents have scouted all those line of scrimmage passes and have them well covered. The option plays are futile because nobody fears Love keeping the ball, as evidenced by his being stopped short on the second two point try.

Run Defense

The Lions steamrolled the Packers for 211 yards on the ground. I’d love to see a stat on how many of those yards came after contact. Running back David Montgomery would get hit two or three yards downfield, and then simply push his tackler forward for another four yards. He was constantly muscling ahead for eight yard gains on first down, making second and third downs way too easy. Why can’t this team stop the run? Again, is it just because they’re too soft?

Holding The Ball

Amazing how the Packers began to move the football when Love started throwing on schedule in the third quarter. In the first half he brought back nightmarish flashbacks to his predecessor by holding the ball until getting sacked. I realize the receivers couldn’t get open, but Love’s got to either throw it away or tuck it and run. His offensive line was mush but he’s got to understand that and discipline himself to make quicker decisions. On this night the game looked too fast for him.

THREE AND OUT

-- Special teams have been a disappointment through four games. Two more holding penalties on returns. The Quay Walker penalty on the field goal try. Keisean Nixon’s futile kickoff returns from deep in the end zone. Did you hear the crowd’s sarcastic cheer when Nixon finally let a kickoff sail over his head for a touchback? Rich Bisaccia hasn’t suddenly become a worse coach. Apparently the personnel is just not there.

-- ESPN’s box score after the game listed Rashan Gary as having zero sacks and zero tackles. Part of that is because Jared Goff did what Jordan Love did not do. Get the ball out quickly and accurately. I saw several plays where Gary had a bead on Goff but the pass was gone before he got there.

-- Losing tight end Luke Musgrave early on to concussion protocol was a major blow. However, Josiah Deguara caught all four of his targets for 34 yards. The Lions weren’t paying any attention to him and Love probably should have gone to him more.

Kenny Clark, Preston Smith, Justin Hollins, De'Vondre Campbell, Jaire Alexander, Rasul Douglas, Darnell Savage, and Rudy Ford.

The Packer defense is not young, it is just mediocre and downright bad against a team committed to running the ball.

Campbell and Alexander did not play, so missing 2 players who have been to the pro bowl.

Defensive line has Wyatt, Brooks, and Wooden who are all first and second year players.

They will grow, but not under Barry. Worst defensive coordinator in the league.

Later in the game, when everyone KNEW the Lions wanted to run the ball, Barry has his nickel defense out with 2 down linemen. When he put out 3 they were pretty good against the run. When will this guy ever learn?

Yes, young teams make mistakes, especially ones with key injuries. I’m not sure what fans expected this year, but many are going to be very disappointed if they expected 10 win season. As I’ve stated previously, it’s going to take time for this team to jell.

My expectation is and was a 6-8 win season, not all that different from Rodgers first year. Patience is a necessary to enjoy the progress we all hope this team makes this year. If you become critical of all the mistakes that inevitably will be present, you will just have a lot of angst to deal with and probably not enjoy the season.

The coaches aren’t young any more and the mistakes aren’t new. The primary problem isn’t players but the coaching staff.

Continuing to put Newman out there makes me wonder what the staff sees in him? And when we were down by 24, why not bring in Nijman or Rhyan or Jones? Newman and Myers both are really bad and even Runyan was getting run over and pushed backwards. Yet, the coaches keep the same players out there time and time again with the same poor results.

Always love the comments from people who have no clue how the board works. They are not football people folks and the last ones who should ever have a say in how the actual team is run. You want to return to the 70's and 80's the shortest route to that is to start letting the board have any say in football operations.

You play like you practice. Too many plays conditioned to the half-effort of a typical Packers practice showed up on this night. Slow, late, letting up, getting run over and pushed around was a common theme.

There was a noticeable difference in the speed and vigor with which the Lions prosecuted the action on both sides of the ball and dictated the outcome of plays.

Dan Campbell has infected his team with his personality. So has Matt LaFleur.

So, Campbell’s team started out 4-19-1. His tough guy approach wasn’t doing very good then. In fact, they were a very bad team. It was a young team, with many top 10 draft picks on the team, much higher than most of the Packers draft picks. In addition, they had and have an experienced, successful QB. I wonder what you and many posters who feel the same way would have said about Campbell then? Probably, his tough guy image doesn’t work anymore in the NFL…lol. The reality the most successful coaches today are more like Mlf than Campbell.

Why is it that MLF doesn’t get the same respect with this rebuilding team. Just because MLF doesn’t act like Campbells, we’re going to bite your kneecap attitude, doesn’t mean MLF isn’t teaching toughness. The worse thing this team should do is change a HC that has shown to be successful. Perennially losing franchises do that.

The reality is the Lions have a more talented, experienced team than the Packers do right now. It will take time for this young team to become good to great.

Because Campbell has thoroughly out coached him 4 times in a row? Because with Rodgers gone he and his staff are now clearly still incompetent in myriad and very similar ways.

LaFleur is exposed. It’s over. The only question is how long before we move on from him and clear out his hires from to rot bottom. Until then, we are just trying to ride Love instead of Rodgers. Let’s not waste potential as we wasted the last dances.

Your statements are subjective……. Like your opinion out weighs others. They don’t because you’re JAG.

What I stated had some facts and objectivity, not just an opinion. Because I think in many peoples opinions the Lions have better talent this and last year. That doesn’t mean he out-coached MLF or that now he’s some messiah. Was MLF a good coach when he won 39 games over 3 years? Or, was it because he had talent? I’d argue it because of both. He didn’t just lose that coaching ability. I’d also argue that if we canned MLF, he’d have no problem getting another HC gig.

So, is Campbell a good coach now because he is or because he has more talent?….you wouldn’t have found many people raving about his coaching talent when he was going 4-19-1. I like Campbell and think he is a decent coach, but I’d argue he’s winning because he has more talent.

IMO, Talent>Coaching. Tom Brady made a compelling argument with his winning in NE and Tampa Bay, while Belichek is no longer winning. Did Bill all of sudden become a bad coach because he’s had a losing record without Brady?

I fully agree with your comment because it is based on some concrete facts. When we had Bac, Jenkins, and even Patrick ( better than Myers); we ran and passed the ball better. I also agree with Ken that a more seasoned QB could have faired better, but with that O line only slightly. Instead of 3rd and 15 it would have been 3 & 9 with same results, a punt.

5 consecutive losses to the Lions.

Might be time for Packer fans to face the reality that Detroit is the better team, has superior coaching, and is more talented overall.

Or, we could continue to pretend that a defense with 8 first round picks and plenty of veterans (Gary, Clark, P. Smith, Hollins, Savage, Ford, Douglas) is gonna improve once Joe Barry gets cooking.

Common Ken, gimmie a break... THAT game was over LONG before Walkers "Bonehead Penalty". The moment the Packers marched out Josh Meyers and Royce Newman it was over. I had to laugh to keep from crying while watching Newman and Meyers get blasted backwards play after play.

Walkers penalty was icing on the cake but could you IMAGINE what the score might have been WITHOUT Walker on the field?

I've really tried to refrain from the MLF bashing but God Damn his teams have NO CHANCE against a physical team like Detroit. He's soft and I'm so TIRED of the lost look on his face game after game.

Steno is a HORRIBLE OC, good O-Line coach but horrible OC. I know he doesn't call plays but God Damn...You get Jones back and don't even fucking use him? UGHHHHHHH!!!

WHY is Jerry Montgomery still the D-Line coach and run game coordinator? He was shit last year, the year before, and the year before that. This year? Double UGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Joe Barry...HAHAHAHA!! I'm really crying right now...

When does Mark Murphy HAVE retire? Until then I'm afraid EVERYBODY will be here. Bob Harlon, Ron Wolf, hell, Elliot Wolf...Where are you?

So everyone thought I was wrong until
the obvious happened.

Your first problem was the OL.
And now that Bahk is done.
Tom must play LT. He has the fastest feet for it.
And the switch must be made at this time.
Next - Since Runyan was moved. He's sucked.
But the bigger problem was Newman.
They went right after him first.
Move Runyan back to RG. Nijman needs to play LG.
And put Walker/Jones at RT so Love can see .

The Dl - Needs 4 up front. My preference is
Brooks ,Wyatt, Clark, Preston.
Subbing the 2 Des for Van Ess and Gary.
Yes I hate the 3-4-4.

But it's Obvious
Walker is the only guy we have at Lb currently.
And Savage while he's doing better. Is a SS.
And Ford needs to be the 5th back in the 4-2-5.

They think they can't get away from the 3-4-4.
But they are so wrong when the whole NFL plays the 4-2-5.

The problem is not the roster and thus not Gute. The problem is LaFleur and his team of nincompoops. That’s Murphy’s work. The biggest winner last night was Rodgers.

LaFleur led us into the trial by fire that debunks the theory that it was his issues that undermined us. LaFleur regurgitated the same with him long gone as soon as a tough opponent truly put us to the test.

LaFleyr is the guy who stole Rodgers last chances at a Super Bowl and after last night that’s clearly obvious and recorded. LaFleur will waste Love and co too. It’s not Gute or Love. It’s Murohy for hiring LaFleur. The Emperor always was naked.

Vulcan mind meld, but Runyan would return to LG. until, when Jenkins returns? Try Rhyan at RG over any scent of Newman's remains. Walker is a RT. We discussed the rebuild and the draft needs. The Evidence File does not change.. Now this season becomes an endurance test of character, but you get what you draft. 4-2 fronts are employed by the top defenses. Why let your star pass rushers be double teamed ? Move guys around. No defense starts a game with a lack of enthusiasm unless the game plan turned them off.

Good post, NP. Watching Myers snap the ball, look up and doesn’t lay a hand on ANY defender makes me yell that I scare the dogs.I can honestly say I haven’t watched opposing centers but I believe he has to be among the worst in the NFL. Except for Tom, their OL is old, injured, and/or experienced and not very good. Until that position gets solidified, expect more of the same.

I'm really hoping we see a big O-Line shuffle in the next 11 days before the Monday Night game in Vegas. I mean they can't seriously consider continuing with Josh Meyers under Center and Newman at LG.

If they do, they best put in the Long Snapper and Love can field the ball another 10 yards back for extra time. Problem was Meyers was getting put on his ass that far back!

Coaching ? Montgomery gained over 100 yds after first contact. I'm not as high on Walker as others. However, I continue to see D lineman shooting the gaps and giving up blocking angles which makes it hard for LBs as RBs are coming at them full speed.

Banged up O-line, I get it. But were any receivers open “on time”? I doubt that 10 was holding the ball just to hold it.
On defense, would having 59 and 23 out there made that much of a difference?
As to usage of 33: is he REALLY healthy enough to be out there? Is that why he was so sparsely used?

I think RBs had 10 carries. Jones didn’t get one until the second quarter. Even Campbell remarked that the Packers were so obviously trying to go deep early it helped them. LaFleur knew he couldn’t run, which means he knew his OL coaches had screwed up but his job is to not let that happen—he’s the HC. Just another example of why he shouldn’t be. If it’s Jones not ready, sit him. If it’s Dillon not able then run someone else and try. You can’t get better examples of a coach so far out of his depth. That’s how he screwed up the post seasons with Rodgers.

What is the possible rationale for accepting the 3rd down penalty and giving the Lions another shot? I rarely yell at the TV but that made me.

Best-case scenario there we stop them (fingers crossed) and they kick a 30-yard fg instead of a 20? I can’t believe they didn’t score a TD just to rub it in our faces.

There is absolutely no reason to be kind. The foreseen simply materialized. The myth was dispelled. LaFleur is a creation of Rodgers. His coaching team is a collection of over promoted disasters in his own image.

First game of the season Detroit beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead. The Lions are tough and healthy. We know the oline is hurting for the Packers so what happened???? They got whipped like a red headed stepson. Young team has problems, we knew it would show up and it has. These young oline men haven’t learned yet how to bring the heat but they will in time. Everything is fixable, but you need coaches that can do it. Keep hearing about Quays bonehead play…ok what about the 2 down linemen that Barry deployed in goalie situation? TD with no effort. Last thing..this team misses Jenkins much more than Bak. These new guys have to use their technique that is taught to them or move aside so someone else can do it.

Just MHO

Jenkins has been very average so far in 2023. Definitely had not been playing up to that contract. Indeed, he really didn't play up to that contract in 2022, either. Paid him on what GB thinks he will return to being.

I agree with you on Jenkins. No G looks good when you have a C who is playing as badly as Myers in the run game, however. He’s making anyone around him worse.

That was obvious even in preseason. C locks or drags down the line in the middle. Myers may be Gute’s biggest error, but Gute drafted Tom as a C. It’s on LaFleur and his subordinates that we refused to push Myers.

There is no excuse and it was obvious last year, more so this summer. The handling of the OL has been atrocious ever since Stenovich was appointed OC and the switcheroo.

The O line was a priority the past two drafts and was ignored. They knew Bhak was an accident waiting to happen and Jenkins knee may have taken some of his burst. The other guys proved they can't play. Patrick at least brought attitude.

Gutey has always caught up too much looking for the future than with filling the holes that were needed immediately. Wr has been a need for a while but ignored atleast if he had drafted may be 2 to 3 yrs ago we would have had some experienced receivers for Love same goes with Oline . We saw the same BS show last yr with this oline that Myers newmann infact Runyan too were not the answers and also the backup tackles were not good against some stout dlines.

Hopefully he'll concentrate more on the oline and Rb's this coming draft.

Jenkins hasn't been the same after that injury and last year he was even worse but it was expected given he was returning back from injury but it continued this year too.

Come on these are not some inexperienced Olinemen most of them were either 3 to 1 yrs of experience and most of them started last yr too when we had much worse Olinemen where 3 of the starting olinemen were returning from Knee or ACL injuries(bakh, Jenkins and Myers) and they tried 6-7 combinations in the first 8 weeks.

I expected this ol to be much better compared to last yr as they played decent amount together but boy that was real BS show last nite.

Well, it's one thing to lose game, be in it, and be competitive. Last night, the Packers got pushed around, looked confused, got manhandled and didn't respond. THAT is on the coaches and especially MLF. He's been whining about the run defense for 2 years now and has done nothing about it.

I pretty much agree with all that has been said above. I was yelling at the TV as well and felt like kicking the dog a few times but remembered I don't have a dog.

I think we all need to step back and realize we have such a young team and after signing a few of our players at exorbitant contracts, we have no Cap room and can't sign anyone. I do not believe this will change until the year after next. As hard as it is for all of us, we are going through a tough Cap time right now and with young players we need to show some patience. This game will not be the last one that we will experience this year or next for that matter. It will take time to build the team back.

I knew we had problems in the trenches but I thought our OL would be better than it is. One issue that we can correct is the coaching problem that we have. This needs to get fixed but not sure who fixes it and to what extent. I like to have faith in our FO but that is part of the problem.

We all love the Packers and we need to try to be patient that it will get taken care of. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Yep, pretty much how a fist fight between the head coaches would turn out. Lions simply manhandled the Packers. I would love to be able to see a strength competition between our DL and theirs. I bet GB would be embarrassed.

It is tough to give out a Game Ball to anyone after the way the Packers were pulverized last night. I understand the Packers are a young team and that there will be mistakes and frustrating losses. That comes with any team in a rebuild or a transition period. However, NFL football is a physical game and the Packers were no match physically for the Lions last night and that is not a good sign for any team.

A divisional opponent came into the Packers home field and just beat them up for nearly the entire game. The OL was manhandled badly by the Lions DL. I'm not sure who was playing on the Packers DL but I didn't see Ken Clark make a play for the entire game. WAs he even in the game? Walker was the Packers best defender again but again diminished his effort with a bad penalty which put the final nail in the Packers coffin last evening.

Love had little to no chance behind the Packers OL last night. The Packers need to get their OL figured out over the mini-bye and over the full bye week after the Raiders game. They have 3 weeks to work things out. They also have about 3 weeks to get Jones and Watson ready to return at 100%. I don't know where they were at last night but they weren't 100% ready to play. I previously posted that they should not return until they were 100% but they were both out there last night and obviosly not an 100%. Why? What's the point?

I have not had much confidence in the coaching staff and that has been further diminished after last night's performance. Poor preparation, out coached and out played at every level.

Maybe Carlson gets a game ball since he has not, missed a kick yet. Then again at least we have the Titletown district. Thanks, Since '61

Never thought we would get schooled like this. Hand it to Campbell and the Lions; they came here ready to play. We are a very young team and will have to take this game as a big learning experience. If we don't learn from this, every team we face will know how to play us and beat us. Our coaches were all outplayed. A beat down that was never close. There should be a lot of soul searching going on at 1265 Lombardi.

Nijman, Jenkins or Runyon/Walker, Tom, Rhyan, Jones. There. Better run blocking. Pass pro may be a tad weaker on the right, but much better inside and running could help us more.

"Pass pro may be a tad weaker on the right"

That's a crap-ton of unknown on the right. We have no idea how that would pan out playing against NFL 1s--run or pass. I agree: they've got to find an answer.

It was a dud last night but did anyone really expect consistent excellence from this team this year? Most prognosticators had them as the third or fourth team in the division and that looks about right. Love just started his fourth game, the O-Line is a mess and the defense hasn't scared anyone in years. My guess is they win seven or eight games and we'll find out if Love and his young receiving group can grow. It's a young team prone to errors with some obvious holes to fill but if Love can take the next step the arrows will begin to point in the right direction.

At some point one has to divorce player growth from coaching. The players are getting better. There’s potential, but the coaches are the main problem not inexperience.

After the game, when asked what happened: “We sucked,” LaFleur said. “We got our ass kicked. If I knew, it wouldn’t have happened. That’s a BS question.”

So he didn't know why they got whipped, and yet he's paid as the HC.

One wonders if he hasn’t rewatched any of the prior Campbell beat downs and has memory issues. Let alone Atlanta or any run blocking, He’s a man wholly out of ideas. He’s looking more lost that MCCarthy was when they fired him in season. It’s perhaps no accident that the players uniformly refer to playing for Love not him.

Game Balls
While I agree there aren't many game balls that should be given out after a performance like that, there are a couple of people i want to highlight.

Carlson -
He has been very good! He nailed the 50 yarder and probably would have been good from 15 yards farther.

Whelan -
He has been very good at holding and his punts overall were pretty good.

Lame Calls
Pretty much everything else. While it was not a good night there are things that were worse then others. Gotta highlight those.

OL -
Getting news that Bakhtiari went on IR yesterday was not great news. Realizing that he may never play in GB again was disheartening. But then seeing what was put on the field was even worse. Walker played like a 7th round pick. Newman was his usual horrible self. It was a struggle most of the game.

Play calling/personnel usage -
Both sides of the ball the play calling was bad. On offense they had no creativity, shied away from the run game. They drew up long developing plays (from what it looked like on tv), and didn't improvise when nothing was working. They did not use Jones nearly enough. On defense I saw way to many times we had 2 DL on the field. And the rotation of players. When its at the goal line why is Hollins in there over Van Ness, Smith, Gary?

Crowd -
I have never seen so many fans from another team in Lambeau. That was embarrassing.

Final thoughts -
This was a young team that played poorly. We were not at full strength and it showed. We need Jenkins back.

I was happy to see how they came out in the 2nd half. They tried making it a game.

This is a young team and there will be a lot of ups and downs. But we have a long break now and hopefully they will figure out some changes to make.

MLF didn't even try to run the ball. The Lions knew it and teed off on Love. I still hear all of his post game pressers from last year when he was lamenting the fact that he was not getting Jones the ball. Last night, same thing. This O line is horrible and they just keep sending out the same players and we're not seeing any improvement at all.

I thought Toure and Reed had great catches, Doubs was a standout. Overall, the receivers caught much more reliably.

Will anyone who thought the Packers would win this game please raise your hand? You should have been tipped off when the Lions beat the Super Bowl champs week one. The Lions are for real. You can debate until next week about the Packers choices right or wrong, but after decades of futility the Lions have gotten it together. Good for them.
Packers fans have been living in a fantasy land that winning in the NFL was perpetual.

This season is the season to correct the mistakes of the past and give young players a chance to grow. The Packers won't win the Super Bowl. They likely won't make the playoffs, but they will get better.

Packers salary for 2023 is $229 million. Because they went all in the last 3 years (including a disastrous 2022 year), $58.662 million is dead cap money (guys not even on the team).

Injured Reserve (Bahktiari, Tyler Davis, and Tenuta) was another $22.319 million who were not available.

Alexander, Jenkins, and Campbell count for another $23.249 million who were not available because of injuries.

That's a ridiculous $104.23 million of value. That's not even counting Gary, Jones, and Watson on snap counts.

2023 is a year of evaluating young talent and will have ups and downs. Next year, Bahktiari is the painful last player of the failed 2020-2022 Super Bowl attempts. Bahktiari is sure looking like he will be injured and force the Packers to have another $40.465 million cap hit in 2024 for someone who doesn't help this team. (Bahktiari contract is among the worst NFL contracts ever).

I see a lot of the flaws on offense something the Vikes oue nemesis knew how to prevent. In their game against Panthers. Cousins was getting rid of the ball quickly before the pass rush could get to him. The difference, he was throwing to very fast receivers in Addison, Jefferson and Kosta. Those guys were at least 25 to 30 yards down field when he let the ball go.
I just read - didnt see game, that our receivers cant get open? Love is holding the ball too long and now getting sacked? My question, where is the god dam speed on this team. Dillon doesnt have it, Jones is so so but no barn burner. There just is no speed except for Reed who drops every other pass and Watson who plays one game and sits four.
This is just absolutely bull shit not knowing who the f to draft and its come home to roost now. The team Gutt made is on that dam field. Slow, injury prone guys who lack strength, agility and play making abilities.
When I read that Gary was Gutts guy because he played two positions I threw up. As an M fan I was never impressed with this POS. He went missing in big games, took plays off, had nagging little injuries that were convenient when the big games came up. Didnt Gutt pass up Watt? This is the team Gutt built. And the coaches he hired. Start blaiming him. Its going to get a lot uglier going forward.

Ken, I gotta disagree with you. Yes there were times our players lost their one on one matchups but coaching could've mitigated that. No adjustments were made.

At this point the only possible hope is for the players to ignore their coaches entirely and to create their own scheme as an "adjustment" when the original plan isn't working. That's a terrible position to put your players in.
