Around the NFC North: Offensive Position Group Rankings

Lions fans are losing it.

How many times have you seen a Lions fan lose it this week and tweet a position group comp between the Packers and Lions with the Lions having the advantage in almost every group? Even worse, have you seen the ones where the Lions fan has fantasy football as the first thing in their Twitter bio? Let's go over some realistic position group rankings for the division.

QB

  1. Jordan Love

  2. Jared Goff

  3. Caleb Williams/JJ McCarthy

The most insane part of these comps is the people who put Jared Goff over Jordan Love. Sure, Goff can hit some wide open receivers when he is perfectly protected, but get some pressure on him and he falls apart. Last season, Jordan Love had 15 big time throws and 10 turnover worthy plays when under pressure, this includes the very meh first 9 or so weeks of the season. Goff had 5 big time throws to 15 turnover worthy ones.

The Lions have a great o-line, as we'll discuss in a minute, but once you pay your QB and number one WR $83mm per year combined while often using first round picks on positions like running back or linebacker, you're gonna run out of room to keep the o-line good. The Lions already had to let star guard Jonah Jackson leave in free agency, replacing him with Kevin Zietler who played for the Badgers 15 years ago

In the end, why don't we let the Shanahan/McVay coaching tree that dominating the league decide. One of its members discarded Goff, knowing he couldn't win a super bowl with him; another hand picked Jordan Love.

RB

  1. Lions
  2. Packers
  3. Vikings
  4. Bears

OK, now that the eavesdropping Lions fans have left in disgust, I can reveal my controversial opinion - I'd take the Lions' running back situation over the Packers. I think Gibbs has higher upside than Jacobs this season and Howard is clearly more productive than Dillon. Of course, Jacobs returning to the 2022 version of himself and MarShawn Lloyd being good right away could quickly tilt the field in favor of the Packers.

The Vikings are obviously better off with Aaron Jones than they were last season but his injury history and their lack of depth puts them pretty far off Green Bay and Detroit. It is hilarious that the Bears are in last place when they made the first move of free agency to tie down D'Andre Swift.

WR

  1. Vikings
  2. Bears
  3. Packers
  4. Lions

Wide receiver is an interesting position to look at. You could put these four teams in almost any order and I'd be OK with it. If you're more of a number 1 receiver guy, the Vikings would be first, if you're more of a receiver corps as a basketball team kind of guy, then the Packers are probably more your cup of tea.

For now, I think you have to put the Vikings first, since they have the clear best receiver in the NFL. Next, the Bears just have the most depth. If Odunze is as good as we think and Keenan Allen still has a little in the tank, they probably have the best three-man corps in the league.

Finally, you may put the Lions ahead of the Packers at first glance, they do have a $30mm per year receiver and a top-10 pick, but I think you have to give the Packers the edge. Sure, the Sun God is the best receiver on either team, but there's a strong argument the next three best receivers are Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks. And Romeo Doubs has better career stats than Jameson Williams. Personally, I think the Packers will be the front runners at this spot by season end, but for now, they're certainly better than at least one other NFC North team.

TE

  1. Vikings
  2. Packers
  3. Bears
  4. Lions

I know, shocking. Sam LaPorta probably had the best ever rookie tight end season last year. He has a good case as the best tight end in the division. TJ Hockenson probably gets that title.

Meanwhile, the Vikings, Bears and Packers all have two very strong tight ends. The Vikings have Hockenson and Josh Oliver who is the league's best run blocking tight end. The Bears just gave Cole Kmet a nice extension and signed Gerald Everett, a veteran pass catching tight end. The Packers have two tight ends, Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave, who may have put up Sam LaPorta type numbers had they been injury free and had Sam LaPorta type opportunity. The Lions have LaPorta and no one else in PFF's top-65 tight ends.

In a league where injuries run rampant and more and more teams are going back to 12 personnel, I'll take the depth.

Offensive Line

  1. Lions
  2. Packers
  3. Vikings
  4. Bears

No way around it here. The aforementioned Zeitler is the only member of the Lions' line who isn't top-ten at his position. And he is probably still top-15.

Next is the Packers and Vikings. The Vikings have Christian Darrisaw who is elite, but the next four best are probably Packers (Tom, Walker, Jenkins, and Morgan). This one is close and I wouldn't argue putting Brian O'Neill (a journeyman tackle who had his best year in 2022) above Rasheed Walker or Jordan Morgan but the Vikings interior three are so horrific, there's no way you can give them second place. They are still clearly better than the Bears.

The only major head scratcher for me is your ranking the Bears WR group second in the division. I would put them 4th. They are relying heavily on an old player and a rookie. McCardell could easily get injured or suffer a big decline in his play, and Odunze is a rookie, with a rookie QB throwing him the ball, so he will likely have to go through an adjustment period. I would also put the Bears TE group 4th.

I like your idea of the Packers receiving corps as a basketball team.

Here's the thing about Goff: He has taken two different teams to the conference championship. He and Campbell have demonstrated they can get points on the board. I would expect Detroit to be a good offensive team again this, partly because of Goff, and partly because of a very good offensive line that protects him.

Love looked as good as I hoped he would look down the final stretch, and I think that with a year behind him and the talent around him, he'll be better than Goff. This is Year #1 in the Lions decline. Someday, a decades from now, you can tell your grandchildren about when the Lions were good.

I'm biased. I think the Packers are going to rock. They're going to win the division. The 49ers will suffer the Curse of the Super Bowl loser. Dallas has already given up hope of ever beating us in the playoffs. Saddle up, Pilgrims, we're going to the Super Bowl.

The Lions may have the best O-line in the whole league (maybe), and Goff will look like a stud as long as that is true. If the line breaks down, I don't think his arm or his ability to make plays "off script" is much better than average. But he's super accurate when he has time.

Chicago's three man corp is what? I'd go with Collins, Diggs, Dell. I am not a fan of Beckham, but Dolphins should be in conversation, and at least Rams (but in my opinion Atwell as #3 not Robinson).

I also don't get the TE assessment. I also think Hockenson is best receiving TE in the North. Better than very good La Porta. Musgrave and Kraft are yet on lower shelf, but there are two of them. Bears? Come on. In my opinon if we consider Hockenson healthy: Vikings, Packers, Lions, Bears. If we look at it like it is for today: Packers, Lions, Bears, Vikings.

Hockenson is so good that the Lions got better after he left and Minnesota got worse.

Packers TE situation is the best, because if Musgrave,Hutchinson, LaPorta, etc. get injured, the Packers are going to play Kraft more. There's no dropoff.

Don’t kid yourselves, LaPorta is a stud. IMO, He’s in the top three in the NFL. Kelce and Andrews are just above him.
Go Packers!!! We’re gonna rock this year.

Totally agree. LaPorta is already a problem, and going forward (meaning for some years into the future) I'd take him over virtually every TE in the league.

It's one thing to have a really good TE, and it's wholly another to utilize that guy well. The Vikings are in one category and the Lions are in the other.

Fair enough, as long as we agree that LaPorta has a heck of a lot more going for him than just the system. If we just look at the player, I take him over every TE in the the NFCN.

LaPorta caught 86 passes for almost 900 yards in an offense where the TE is an integral part of the passing game....he got targeted 126 times.

Musgrave and Kraft got targeted 86 times in an offense where the TE is most often used as a blocker. They caught 65 balls for 700 yards. Basically, LaPorta caught 20 more passes for 200 more yards than our guys did. They had to throw it to him 40 more times to make that happen.

I'll take Goff over Love. He just got paid.
Love is still in development. Goff is seasoned.
St Brown got a big contract.
And their Wrs are hyped just as much as
the Packers.
The Lions will win the division.
Los Vegas is right.

I think we tend to agree on most of these points.

I think it's too early to anoint Love as the best QB in the division. That might change by mid-season, but he's going to get paid, too.

Star power tends to drive position groups like WR, and the Lions and Vikings both have it.

"The Lions will win the division"

Yup.

In other news, it looks like Robert Tonyan has signed with the Vikings. Maybe now Packer fans will finally admit that he wasn't very good.

We can banter over the skill positions but it all starts with the OL. The Lions are tops in the division there--at least as we look at it in May--and they have a little depth to handle injuries through the year. The Vikings and Bears did little to improve their OLs and they're going to struggle, especially as injuries set in.

I think a key factor for the Packers in 2024 will be the development of their OL depth. They're going to need guys to step in at some point and absorb significant snaps. There's plenty of positional flexibility that allows for adjustments, but that 6th and 7th OL need to be playably good.

And don't you think they have that? With Morgan, they have three playable tackles right away. With Monk, they've got an option behind (or maybe in front of?) Myers. And they have competition at RG if Morgan doesn't beat Rasheed right away... That's 8 playable guys.

Yes, the Lions starting 5 OL and top TE (in theory) are better. The Packers are better at literally every other offensive position on the field cumulatively. Throw in that the Lions have questions at CB and FS and secondary pass rusher?

Man, I don't see how GB, who finished the year better than DET, isn't the better, more skilled and deeper team, right now.

If LaPorta - who finished his rookie regular season with 900 yds, 10 touchdowns, a pro bowl selection and a second team All-Pro nod, as well as being a member of the all rookie team and the 6th ranked tight end by PFF - is "in theory," then Musgrave, Kraft, Rasheed, Monk, Rhyan, and Morgan are all massively more "theoretical" than he is.

Looking at the Packers roster, I would say that the lions are not the only team to have questions at cornerback and safety.

That said, Green Bay is kicking ass this year. 🤪

Fair. I was more speaking of their OL compared to ours. I can see us playing them to a draw on OL and we certainly have more depth.

I was rewatching the Thanksgiving game. Did the Lions leave their starters in the locker room? Because the Packer defense was on Goff like ugly on an ape, sacking and hitting him and causing several fumbles. Plus, Detroit was 0-5 on 4th down, so I'm thinking maybe people weren't getting blocked.

I wonder if Dillard is in the mix at guard, or if they see him exclusively as a tackle.

"The Vikings and Bears did little to improve their OLs and they're going to struggle, especially as injuries set in. "

The Bears did 3 things to improve their O-line:
* improved starting center.
* improved interior line depth.
* improved LT depth (and potential replacement for B.Jones if he regresses or doesn't re-sign).

Granted, they weren't big moves, but they did more than 'little'; they focused on their biggest issues.

A fair bit of this is...shockingly...somewhat objective. A couple things I'll call out.

TE: all 4 teams have a claim to 'best' here, so I won't argue the rankings.

WR: Overall depth=GB. Top WR=Minn. Top 3WRs=Bears. Personally, I'd take the Bears WR room over any of the others, but YMMV.

That said...

O-Line: "They are still clearly better than the Bears." Don't be so sure about that. OK, their depth is unknown, and last year the depth was definitely poor and exposed when 3 of their starters were down. But I don't think you make a good case that MN o-line is better than CHI. I agree that DET clearly has the best o-line.
