Cory's Corner: Hafley Is Hungry For A Defensive Change

He's exactly who the Packers need, because this is where he really wants to be.

I have not seen the Packers defense play a single down in 2024, but I’m already looking forward to a unit led by its new defensive coordinator.

“So the things I believe in defense — whether you're playing 3-4 or 4-3, press man, which I do love, zone coverages, vision and break, quarters, match — it comes down to can you take your players who you have and put them in the best position to succeed?” said Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. “And can you take your players and maximize their ability?”

He has the energy of a Venti-sized drink at Starbucks. Those are the words that we all wanted to hear come flowing out of the mouth of Joe Barry. The problem is, we never did.

What separates Hafley is that he was a head coach. He knows what it means to be a CEO of a football team. He knows all of the aspects of running a team. And since college football has been changed with the transfer portal and NIL money, many college coaches have made the exodus because they just want to coach football.

Enter Hafley. With his wife and two young kids not in Green Bay, he has watched enough tape to make his eyes fall out of their sockets. But the funny thing is, that’s who Hafley is. He’s a guy that lives and breathes football.

This is the guy the Packers want. This is the guy the Packers need. They desperately need a guy that is going to be a grinder for this team. A guy that is going to do whatever it takes to make this defense the answer and not the question.

“I want us to be fast and physical and attack the ball,” said Packers coach Matt LaFleur. “We will be a little more vision-based on the back end, and I think that's a great opportunity to be able to go out there and generate takeaways.”

That is important because Barry’s philosophy was to bend but not break. Hafley is going to let his players run around with their hair on fire and make plays. The most important aspect of modern NFL defenses is generating pressure on the opposing quarterback. When that happens, he gets rushed and there’s a good chance that he’s going to make a mistake — namely a turnover.

Most of the pieces are there on defense. The back end needs help, but as of right now before free agency and the draft, this team can generate pressure as long as they are used correctly. You cannot play soft on short or medium third downs and you have to be the aggressor.

So many times last year, Barry opted to play it safe by giving up precious yardage at the line of scrimmage.

That will change this year. The defense will get beat but not because the scheme was completely bewildered. It will get beat because the offense made a better play.

And I like how Hafley wants to build relationships to build trust. He knows that there is no reason why anyone in the defensive room should trust him. Both sides need to trust each other for this to work and the first place he needs to start is Jaire Alexander. He used to be a shutdown cover corner before being turned off by weird schemes. Now he just needs to be reminded that he can be trusted to make the play.

The Packers don’t even start camp for another five months, but I really like where this is going.

Hafley is hungry.

Coach Hafley: "...it comes down to can you take your players who you have and put them in the best position to succeed?” Well, how about that?

Haf also said he and his staff will "be demanding of the players but not demeaning". He will be in command, but also collaborative. Words often used were "relationships, trust, listening, buy-in."

His style seems to be very assertive...but not in an aggressive way. There is a difference. Assertive people get what they want while respecting the rights of others. Aggressive people get what they want without regard to the rights of others.

That he was able to "sell" rising star young assistant coaches like Campanile and Ansley on his vision shows he is persuasive. Now get the players to buy in and let's go!

Maybe the Packers will again have a D that can help carry the Pack to victory when the O has an off day.

It can also be very expensive as in "I have decided to keep Joe as Defensive Coordinator next season for continuity."

All it means when the cap is raised is more guaranteed contracts and higher market value for QB's, LT's, WR's and Edge players. The percentage cost of these players contracts go up and leave teams in the same spot they were already in. In other words, you raise the cap and soon to follow is the QB position now goes up to 50-60 million a year instead of 40-50. It doesn't end up being extra money.

As I understand it, the available cap increase significantly is less than the 30 million headline figure. Ken Ingalls summed it up as “I now have the Packers at $2.8M under the cap today, while effectively being $15.5 over the cap” for the start of the league year. So a change of +$18.3 million.

That means we don’t have to play cap games to get under the cap for the league year start. We don’t have to cut players or mortgage the future to do so. It doesn’t mean we don’t have to shed cap to survive the league year and more to start bringing in FAs.

We can do that of course, but it’s not likely to be enough to do more than being in a couple of mid tier FAs as opposed to perhaps one. If we start borrowing heavily from the future again, we could do more. I fervently hope we don’t this year.

It’s also worth noting that the rise was due in part to some one offs. I’m not clear if we are just rejoining the curve after the Covid dip or are now above it and the curve will flatten next year. If it’s an exaggerated jump, teams will be more cautious potentially.

The cap actually went up about $13 million ($255.4 million minus $242.5 million) from the expected 2024 budget, not $30 million, so Gute only has $13 million more than planned to work with. The Packers also just wrote off about $10 million in void year dead cap hits when they did not resign Savage, Nijman or Nixon, so Gute has pretty much spent the windfall already.

It looks like the Packers are using this windfall to get the cap right for 2025 rather than continuing to dig holes for the future. And I am just fine with that.

They should have determined which CB, LB and Safety to pursue last December. I still advocate for Kendall Fuller. Toss in Willie Gay, K.C. will protect Chris Jones. Only the Fans settle for the playoffs. Dial it in for the Big Game. Let Love do his thing.

I was hoping/praying/suggesting that the cap needs to start increasing by $25 to $30 million per year for a while just to keep pace with what QBs, OTs and Edges have been getting for years. Better late than never.

This helps us a bunch cap wise, but we still don't need a duplicate of 2019 again. This could be double whammy good if we play it right. Get some FA help and not destroy the cap for years to come.

We need at least a new Safety and LB. I would argue a younger up and coming Edge rusher would help too, depending on what we can acquire @ S & LB. GB should be able to find 2 fast, good tackling, preferably young, talented players for under $20 million total. That might be as much as we want to spend this year. The exception to young for me would be 2 years of Bobby Wagner tackling and teaching LB 101 in Green Bay for 2 years @ $5 million per.

If Hafley can get his words into execution on the field the Packers defense is going to be very different and very effective. So far I like what I'm hearing from Hafley.

It may take a while for the transition to take place but over the course of the 2024 season I think that we're going to see the defense improve with every game.

It's great to hear a Packers DC finally speak about being aggressive on defense. He seems to bring the aggressive, physical attitude which the Packers defense has been sorely lacking for last several seasons. Time will tell. GPG! Thanks, Since '61

Agree, '61. The D may go through a progression like the young O did last year. Took awhile to get the engine humming but finally all cylinders were firing and Matt pressed on the gas. I expect D growing pains followed by accelerating gains.

Perhaps the soft label on the Packers D will finally be replaced by a defense defined by a physical, snarly swarm of tacklers.

I love what I am hearing from Hafley and I think he has put together a great staff, but I also want to see what he puts on the field before I get too carried away. I will be very pleased if we finally see an aggressive defense rather than this soft zone crap. The Packers will give up more big plays with an aggressive defense, but hopefully also generate more turnovers. I found it so demoralizing when opposing offenses would just march up and down the field at will against the Joe Barry defense.

are all good fits for an aggressive defense.

Agree and I would add Kenny and a healthy Stokes to your list.

I think Kenny will thrive with a 4 man front. Stokes had a promising rookie career playing man CB. Then Barry played him in zone and he regressed until his serious, unfortunate injury.

Stokes is kind of a much-needed wildcard right now. Getting him back healthy and productive would be almost like signing a good Free Agent CB at this point. We still need a top CB through the draft, and we should have options whether one falls to us @ #25 or @ #58. I am hoping for at least one of Nubin and Kinchens to be there @ #41. Fingers crossed.

Very impressive press conference but the proof is in the pudding. Hope Gute adds some key pieces for him (safety etc). Refreshing to hear that he’s going to be aggressive at times and hope he stresses better tackling. Good luck to our new DC!

"Refreshing to hear that he’s going to be aggressive at times and hope he stresses better tackling. Good luck to our new DC!" Me too!!

I liked when he said he wants 2-3 guys attacking the ball at the same time every play. He also said he wants guys attacking the pile to make sure guys get taken down. So long as he stresses technique in there as well, his attitude alone is already in the right place.

Previously, under JB, it was always one guy at a time attempting arm tackle after lunging (no arms involved) shoulder pad only tackle.

"I liked when he said he wants 2-3 guys attacking the ball at the same time every play."

I think every DC would say that. LaFleur complained about the lack of that mentality two or three times this year. Now we find out if that was a coaching issue or a player issue. I'm hopeful.

We, the fans are hungry too. I'm especially anxious to see a defense with third down and three to go...go after that offense for a change.

What I take from the Hafley press conference is that he is leader of the men and he knows how. Quality experts tends to follow true leaders, and that is what Hafley show me that he got that in himself.

True expert knows how to explain complicated situation, plan, idea in the simple way so that his subordinates and cooperates can understand idea, plan or situation. Whe you understand the problem, you are already on or near the solution for it.

My take is that he knows that (confirmed by several star players he coached in NFL) and that is the first, most important step, laso, ery often the hardest one.

I'm really keen to see his product on the field. I believe it will be amazing...

Croat, my concern is that those stud players would have been studs regardless of our new DC. Name dropping and a tenuous association doesn’t equal excellence. However, fingers crossed and let’s hope for a few more takeaways this year and far fewer times heading into the last half of the fourth quarter when you really only wonder just how the Barry Defense is gonna give up the lead with little or no time left. More possessions for a hopefully high powered offense please.

One of the first articles after Hafley's hiring stated how he stressed proper tackling technique @ Ohio State. With top shelf recruits like the Buckeyes always have plenty of, you would think 5 star D-Backs would know how to tackle properly already. Hafley helped turn them into the #1 college defense that year. Its extremely exciting to think of what he will put into place.

GO PACK GO!!!

How would one play if one’s hair were actually on fire? Would this cause you get to the ball more quickly, or would you first have to rip your helmet off and extinguish the fire, thus delaying your arrival to the ball?
