Aaron Rodgers, Packers have 'a ton of faith' in Mason Crosby after struggles

-- Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers throwing for over 400 yards in a losing effort wasn't the only rare occurrence at Ford Field on Sunday.

Enter Mason Crosby, who became the first kicker to miss at least five kicks in a single game since 2001.

"I don’t get this much attention unless it's really bad or extremely good," Crosby told PackersNews.com after the 31-23 loss at the paws of the Detroit Lions. "Unfortunately, it’s really bad."

Sunday marked what will presumably go down as the worst performance of his career. Entering the game, Crosby had never missed more than two kicks of any capacity in a game in his career, which began in 2007 when the Packers drafted him in the sixth round of the draft.

12 seasons since, Crosby has become the Packers' all-time leading scorer. A remarkable achievement that offers Crosby a little more cushion for games like these as opposed to a rookie kicker such as Daniel Carlson, who was released by the Minnesota Vikings after going 0-for-3 against the Packers in week two.

Regardless, a high standard is what Crosby holds himself to. Not being able to meet it in a pivotal division game and falling short to such a degree as he did on Sunday stings.

"I'm going to have to really look at this one. This hurts a bunch, I left a lot of points on the field for this team. I’m disappointed in my performance."

Crosby was hitting the ball well from Ford Field's turf during pre-game warmups, even being the first player back on the field during halftime to work on his kicking. At that point, he was 0-for-3.

"It's disappointing obviously: being inside, how I’ve been hitting the ball," Crosby said. "For me, that just feels like one of those days. Because I feel extremely good this year with how I’m striking it.

"We’ll just get back to work and make sure it doesn’t happen again."

Rodgers was adamant in defending his teammate of 12 seasons after the game. Both of their collective shortcomings didn't lead to the Packers' second loss of the season, but both veterans left a lot on the field that could've helped change the course of the game in one way or another, even in the slightest.

"Mason and I have been close friends for a long time," Rodgers said. "We sit next to each other on the planes, we've known each other for years, spent some holidays together. I love him. I think he's a great guy.

"I think he's one of the greatest kickers of all time. I've always said him and Robbie Gould, what they do in the elements over the years, is some of the finest kicking I've seen in my time."

Rodgers and coach Mike McCarthy were in the camp that stuck by Crosby during his rough 2012 season in which he suffered his lowest field goal percentage of his career. There's the expectation that they'll continue to stick by him once again, as they should.

"We have a ton of faith in him. He's done it for a long time, made some big kicks for us over the years. They gotta clean up the operations -- snap, hold -- and he's gotta make them."

It would not fall on Crosby if the Packers were better in the red zone , he is allowed to have a bad day at the office.

Redzone (3-4) and 4th efficiency (2-2). I see your problem.

We wouldn't need better pass-rushers if the DBs could cover for five seconds or longer either.

No accountability in Green Bay, Crosby can miss as many kicks as he wants.

They didn't fire Brett Favre after a 6 int playoff performance and they won't fire Crosby over this once in his career horrible game. There's nobody out there that is better than Crosby. I feel bad for the guy and he's our all time scoring leader and pretty darn dependable except for today. No need to pile on this guy anymore. I'm giving the guy a second chance. If he misses all or most kicks next game than I believe there's a problem. I don't see that happening. This was an aberration.

It was the HVAC in Ford Field. The stadium crew was closing all the other vents. They were using Bernoulli's Principle causing a pressure differential with the air flow laterally crossing the field. This higher air speed caused the ball to drift right. The NFL should investigate. TIC
Does everyone feel better now?

Not Bernoulli. No one likes their principles being exploited for evil.

I think your on to something. The Detroit kicker missed one too. I thought it was a bend in the polar vortex.

In PERFECT kicking conditions Crosby misses 4 FG's and an extra point...His SECOND extra point to go with the one he missed against Minnesota.

I don't really want to see him released but I don't think I'd be that busted up either.

Other teams like the Vikings replace their kicker after he costs them a win. The Packers probably don't want to hurt Crosby's feelings like that so they'll let him lose another game or two before they look to address his lack of production.

I've always generally liked Crosby, but if anything like this happens again, it might be time to start looking. Absolutely did not like the unnecessary field goal at the end. It almost looked liked Crosby and AR were celebrating a win.

You can't wait. New kicker ASAP. He's lost it. The extra points say it all! His friends are leaving and he will too.

Everybody has a bad day they wish to forget. He's got a rookie LS and holder. I don't know if they had anything to do with the misses, but they may have has some impact if laces didn't get turned etc. Crosby deserves the benefit of the doubt. If the offense would have played up to their capabilities, if MM would have this team ready to play at game time,we wouldn't be having this conversation now. If you get rid of Crosby this week, who are you going to get to replace him? He will turn it around.

The snaps and holds looked fine. Anyway, it would be a stretch to say he missed FIVE kicks due to this.

Just re-watched the point after after the TD pass to Adams. Now I don't know what he said to Scott but that hold was perfect. Hopefully he's not going to try and blame that kid for a bad hold on at least that kick. The hold was fine..The CHOKE not so much.

I got a dislike for quoting AR. Hmmm. So, were the snaps and holds below accepted standards? Or was AR: 1) just trying clumsily to distribute blame to the team as a whole; or 2) throwing the snapper/holder under the bus to deflect blame from his buddy Crosby?

Seems to me he was just hitting on the key parts of the kick: everyone was mentioned, except the blockers.

Hard to stomach after watching Graham Gano nail a 63-yarder to win the game for the Panthers.

This was a nightmare from the word go on offense and special teams. Considering the positions it was routinely put in, I thought the defense acquitted itself relatively well. Not great, but ok.

No. In order, this loss is on:

1. Coaching staff for not having the team ready. Again.
2. Aaron. Friecking. Rodgers. Let go of the damn ball.
3. Mason, you had a really, REAALLY bad day.

I saw it as a pawsative. Mason has earned an opportunity to compete. We'll take a look at his fundamentals this week, but from the sidelines I thought his pad level looked excellent.

Crosby's a legend to some, as for me I'll never forget screaming "he kicked it twice" his two kicks back to back where he got froze, hit it, then did it again at the 51 yard line to end the Dallas game. Those are the memories I hold but yesterday was definitely a doozy and as bad as it was, for what its worth, we witnessed history that even the changing of the kicking shoe couldn't stop.
