Packers Select Jordan Morgan, OT in 2024 NFL Draft - Round 1

Jordan Morgan, Arizona, Offensive Tackle

MEASURABLES/PRO DAY:

At 6'5, 311 pounds, Jordan Morgan ran a 5.04 in the 40-yard dash and had a 1.70 10-yard split. He had a vertical jump of 28" and a broad jump of 9'2"

CAREER NOTES:

Jordan Morgan had two starts in six games as a true freshman at LT and again had two more on the blind side in 2020 as a sophomore at LT before injury ended his season.

In 2021 Morgan started the final 11 games at LT despite playing through a high-ankle sprain suffered in fall camp

In 2022 Jordan Morgan earned an honorable mention in All-Pac-12 Conference. He started the first 10 games at LT before tearing his ACL and missing the final two games of the year

In 2023 Morgan finally had a full season starting 12 games at LT earning First-team All-Pac-12 conference honors.

NFL SCOUTING REPORT:

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

From the CheeseheadTV Draft Guide: On film, Morgan’s explosion and movement skills appear top-notch and were confirmed by his elite 1.70 10-yard. split in the 40-yard dash at the combine. The former team captain (“Captain Morgan”) needs to hit the weight room to be able to hold up better against power. Overall, he has a lot of what the Packers look for, experience, movement ability, and multi-position versatility. Factor in an arm's length below their threshold for tackles and Morgan is your classic Packers left tackle-to-guard convert who can play tackle if needed.

The Packers don't know if Rasheed Walker is their solid Left Tackle of the future. He may be, he may not. So,  the Jordan Morgan selection perhaps solidifies the position protecting Jordan Love's blindside. He is an excellent zone-blocker which fits the Packers' scheme, despite being an okay run-blocker. My thoughts are, that Morgan will be a tackle on the Packers roster but let's not forget he has the versatility the Packers look for being a Guard-convert. They may prefer him outside, but I wouldn't count out a few looks inside just in case.

COMMENTARY:

No, it's not the sexy pick everyone might've wanted. But it does fill a need on this Packers team for protecting the franchise. A week ago I emphasized that the Packers must protect Jordan Love at all costs. We believe he is our third straight franchise QB, so we need to keep him upright. I mentioned in that very article that Indianapolis didn't protect Andrew Luck very well, and look what happened to him. We can't let that happen to Jordan Love if we expect to win a Super Bowl in the next few years.

In perfect Packers fashion, we took a player who suffered several injuries in college alongside that dreaded ACL season-ender. The good news is he's a year removed from that ACL injury and he had an outstanding season after it. Of course, concerns will fly regarding his health but hopefully, his injury history is behind him and he will be a solid lineman to protect Jordan Love for many years to come.

Jordan Morgan has said that he models his play after the Packers' long-time blindside protector, David Bakhtiari. Bakhtiari also seemed pretty hyped via Twitter over the selection, so hopefully Morgan can have the same success as Bakhtiari in Green Bay.

So, because the OL we just drafted in the 1st played a full season on his reconstructed ACL,we will somehow be spending more money on defense because we -didn't- select your draft crush DB with our first selection?

SO, you think we're spending more money on defense now that we'd be selecting later in the draft?

You, my friend, turn nuttier than squirrel turds when you feel slighted by the Packers doing anything that doesn't align with your personal preference.

No- I'm saying because Gute went
against his word to fix the back 7.
He must now rely on bottom feeders
To fix the ILB and SS position.
So that means the money must come from somewhere?
Which Means after he pays Love.
He must cut fan favorites.
Making his job indispensable.
Until his next job.

1) The draft isn't over. Newsflash: Dejean (as well as many other talented DBs) are still on the board. Anything can happen between tonight and pick #41 (and beyond).

2)"Which Means after he pays Love.
He must cut fan favorites.
Making his job indispensable.

Does this actually make real sense to you? There is no discernible logic here. Get it together, man.

TWO picks in Rd Two, the heart of the Safety rankings and snag another CB, or Guard. TWO selections in Rd Three, the range for the available LBs. The LBs can be had in Rd Four for the matter and get guys who can Tackle and Diagnose fast. All Conference guys like Eichenberg,or Jaylan Ford who can control the middle. Walker is their chase guy. Maybe Gute trades up in Rd two and moves on DeJean? If you listened to Saban, he explained the big SS guys have been relegated almost to a point of irrelevance, due to the Rule Changes, opening up the middle zones for WRs who have no worry about being decleated on the cross patters.

Jb you can't take a CB when you pass on the best Cbs.
Thats bottom feeding.

Fortunately, there are more than 32 players available in this draft. With 4 picks today, there is still plenty of opportunity to find a LB, Safety and CB today. Today's picks will be even cheaper than Morgan.

A quick check of the math shows addressing those 3 needs would still leave one pick today to add another OL. Or perhaps a RB. Or maybe double-up on a spot above. Or other.

And then comes Saturday, with 5 more picks.

Oh the joys of having lots of draft capital. It's the lifeblood of any team. Even picks after round 1.

See post below JB.
You must question why the
Cowboys passed on him.
Passed on Barton and still
got the higher rated OT.
That draft pick was almost a 4th.
Gute Blew getting the top CB on the board.
It was well known the Lions were going to trade
up for a CB. They were looking at Mitchell.
Again Gute helps the Lions.

They profile tall OTs like Tyler Smith and Tyron Smith. Tall guards like Zach Martin because they play power sets, not zone blocking schemes. Surprised Q fell within range, but Philly was taking NO offers. The teams which passed him over, will regret the fact. I evaluated the Pack's need up front, premised on the idea that Q. Mitchell would not get past Indy.

Great Pick! His injury was in 22 and he had a great 23’. This is a prototype Guard, a mauler. The running game just improved, can play LT as a back up. Walker and Caleb jones….nothing wrong with them at LT. They protected Love along with Tom at the right side. Packers were getting too much pressure up the middle ( think Dillon having to break tackles before he even got to the line….thats the guards responsibility. I said it before in previous posts. This pick was a need….who’s the back up guard ….Royce?? Gimme a break, Royce can’t block a cream puff. This was a solid good pick to protect the future and improve an already decent running game. Not at all disappointed with this pick….and more rounds to go. Next up DL and LB.

For those of you screaming cb….Valentine played well, rarely got beat and plays sticky, Alexander is a pro, Ballentine played with his hair on fire. It wasn’t their fault the previous coach had em playing off coverage…and let’s not forget about stokes…who may have put the injuries behind him. Hafley has a lot to work with…and now we have an all pro saftey.

This was a smart pick.

He eliminated the safeties who gave up the big plays to the 49rs in the fourth quarter during the Playoff Game and put the cash down for McKinney to patch one spot in the back seven. I for one, am not mourning their loss. Get Better
Four picks to snag the other starting safety and a plethora of available free agent veterans still on the market.
I would move on two CBs and a guard like Beebe ,or Coleman, day two.

Barton needs to add power. He was the other of the two most ready OL in the draft that were ever likely to fall to us. We picked one of them. Neither particularly surprising nor glamorous, but we just got better this year with a player who can play both T and G realistically.

I’m not so sure of that logic, but the outcome may be correct. He has got a 1” greater wingspan than Tom. Ultimately, that may be what set him apart from Barton. Morgan could, with his attributes, move straight to T. I just don’t know that’s where he helps us most. We chose one of the players who projects to either credibly.

The mention Morgan has a wider wing span than Tom is interesting. Thanks for that tidbit of information. It would be nice to know he could legitimately be seen as a viable OT and not just an interior OL.

And he has hands like an Ent...Treebeard Morgan.

I think Jordan is going to be Jordan's blind side protector for many years.

Walker to RT, Tom to C.

Now draft a solid IOL to give Rhyan some competition at RG...the weakest link.

Yawn...Could've traded back and gotten him. The good news is he's very experienced and good in pass protection. But he's not a mauler, which would have been a nice consolation prize. The bad news is his name isn't Cooper DeJean or someone that can help us fill in our secondary. And the board fell perfectly for us.

Gutey has draft capital in rounds 2 and rounds 3. I would not be surprised to see Gutey trying hard to trade up into the early 2nd round tomorrow. Cooper may still be on their short list.

Anyone else wonder if the Lions traded up right before the Packers because they knew the Packers wanted CB, Arnold?

DeJean isn’t the best corner in this draft. He’s not the best outside corner still available. He is a very good slot option and he might have been a good candidate to convert to a good FS. As a SS he’s not nearly the best prospect. He’s also much better suited to zone type play. He’s a bad fit for us after Hafley and then McKinney were signed. He will be very good as a slot for, hopefully, an AFC team ideally with a Barry type D or converting to start at FS somewhere. Time to move on.

I find it kind of funny that Morgan is talked about as an over reach yet he’s been in the group of players in this pick range continually, along with several with far more dubious claims to it. Sexy, no. In fact it’s kind of dull. No reach on potential not yet delivered, not a big media buzz name, just a good player who fits a need. Gute did boring but sensible. The one thing none of us really expected.

Morgan IMO is the starting RG come week one. If he's not then Gute better nail EVERY pick hereafter. There were players still on the board who could have helped and helped right away....Time will tell.

Welcome to Green Bay Jordan...

The Packers outfoxed Detroit and got them to waste draft capital to leap ahead. Dallas got the line help they wanted and an extra pick.

Gutekunst let the draft come to him and got the guy he wanted. It was masterful.

For those of you whining at home, it would be a great idea for you to not watch the draft and read about the pick in the morning. On to round two.

How did it look vs the 49rs in Playoff (Games) over the past five years when a starting OT went down? Nijman replacing Zach Tom, the most recent example. I would choose Morgan over some of the boat anchors who went before him, any day.

CHTV are not the only ones that have had Morgan going in this range. I’m surprised so many are shocked that he did or that he was one we had our eyes on. Admittedly it seemed a tad boring for Gute, but hey, good player and a plausible day one OL improvement immediately. Good move.

I stand corrected. I should have said "most" of the mock drafts I've seen. Since I'm not a Draftnik I didn't see Al's CHTV guide pick. Apologies to Al from me. I was just trying to make the observation that typically after all the pre-draft hype for draft crush players the Packers always seem to surprise the fans with their first draft pick every year.

What the heck? Sure Morgan got a 9.24 RAS score. He also has a rebuilt knee, is slow, and not that monster mauler we needed at LT. Dagummit, every year when the Packer pick is announced, instead of shouting "YEA", I'm shouting "WHO"? Morgan was a 2 rounder for sure. Hoping Guter moves up in the 2nd to pick Dejean. I'm surprised at the GB 1st round. I expected more fireworks for a top OL or DB. That didn't happen tonight!

He’s not an LT although he can play there. He will be a guard at 311 lbs . Packers let way too many defenders up the middle last year. Newman will be gone and this guy could replace Rhyan. No brainer solid pick…improves running game and protects the franchise from the interior line. I’m happy z

Yes, I think some people are attempting to compare DE/OLB type numbers to a 310 lb offensive lineman. I also think they look at 40 yard dash results when OL play on a field that is roughly a 10' box.

People are off their rocker at times. The brings out all the loonies.

The only way this ends up being a good pick is if this guy ends up being a starting tackle. If he ends up at guard then you wasted the value of that pick. Starting guards can be had in rounds 2 through 4.
Gute better be right on this one when you had several defensive players on the board that would have helped you immediately. We will see.

LP,
I don't see the Morgan pick as an indication the Packers are not happy with their OTs. Morgan was selected for his versatility with a primary focus on the interior line. This will be an interesting pick to watch as almost everyone had guys like Graham Barton and LBJ rated higher to play on the interior of the OL. Gutey still needs to draft an OT and one more IOL somewhere in this draft.

Stockholder operates in a world where he truly believes everything is pre-ordained.

He refuses to acknowledge that the draft is speculative. For some reason, he believes the moves every team in the NFL are "right" except the moves made by the Packers. "the cowboys wouldn't pass on a starting LT" etc and so forth.

He does not acknowledge that nearly 50% of 1st round picks "bust".

His draft guide is always the accurate source, regardless of the real-world outcomes of the selections over the years.

As the kids say.. It' fuckin' wild, man.

it wasn't quite as good as taking bo nix at 25, but it's still high quality. this draft couldn't have broken any better for the Packers, the Vikings panicked, traded up twice and wasted future capital, the Lions blinked and panicked and wasted a third round pick. Classic.

tomorrow, oh tomorrow, the bears will still be the bears, the Vikings will still wear those awful purple uniforms and be their regular average selves, and the lions will revert to form. tonight was a perfect night.

Not really. Like Humphrey, Barton was rated higher just about everywhere. If Barton was the choice, nobody would later point at Morgan. In any case, we’ll find out soon enough. I also worry that Morgan already had the ACL.

But hey, could be worse. Could be the Vikings who tried to trade up to get a top QB. Tried to trade for Justin Herbert laughingly and failed. And then got extorted by the Jets giving up two draft picks to move up one spot and grab McCarthy, next coming of Christian Ponder!

On to day 2! No need to trade up for anyone. I know the DeJean folks out there want it to happen, but every GM in the league just passed on him so that tells me that the media pundits might have overhyped him. We have the 9th pick in the second round. There are plenty of off ball LBs available at that point. Prob our choice of Cooper, Colson, or Wilson. Prob a good DB, maybe even DeJean, but also a bunch of other CBs and safety’s. Very likely a starter waiting for us at this pick.

I agree SDPqck. It was obvious in my mind we needed to restock the offensive line for the future. Check that box. Rasheed Wallace is our LT now & for the foreseeable non injured future. Morgan should be an OG who is needed. I wanted DeJean, but I am not Gute or have the knowledge of his scouting staff. Day 2, refortify our defense. Do not panic and trade up. If a true need does not fall to us at pick 91, trade back (Carolina-LA Chargers). Gute has a good track record of 4th & 5th round picks. Get the Pack 4th-5th quality additions on day 3. In Gute I Trust. The Dejean trauma has passed, move onward and upward.

With Bak gone was figuring they would take an OL in the first round but not one with an ACL tear. How Baktiari responded to his injury, it makes one wonder how Morgan will hold up. He won't be blocking college kids anymore but bonified maulers from the NFL. That knee will surely be tested. Guess he needs to hit the weight room. Good luck GPG

I had a comment at 10:41 PM last night. But the day after: I must admit, crow cereal doesn't taste good for breakfast. Upon further review, I must admit I made too hasty a judgment of this pick. After doing research, here's why this dude is the typical, non-flashy GB pick that hopefully will keep J.Love on his feet and open holes for J.Jacobs.....assuming his repaired knee holds up.

37 career starts at LT @ 22 yrs old
ca 900 snaps-31 QB pressures-3 sacks
2x team captain
9.24 RAS score, typical GB OL
All Pac 12 player
versatile - possibly play 4 OL positions
won every rep in Senior Bowl and dominated UCLA edge Latu
5th highest rated tackle w/ 500+ snaps
listed on Cowboys & Ravens 1st rd draft board

I have no problem with Gutey taking Morgan over Barton. This pick is about solidifying OT/OG, which in my view and Gutey's apparently, we think Morgan is potentially better at both positions than Barton. My question/problem all along was if Barton was better than the best OGs in the draft since he was moving inside for sure. I had no doubt he was not in the Top 3 best OCs.

Choosing Morgan is about as safe a pick as we could make filling one of our biggest needs @ #25, OT/OG. The only way better is if we had scored 2 extra picks by moving back, but according to rumors Dallas almost picked Morgan @ #24. So the pick might have been Sua, JPJ, Frazier or even DeJean if we had moved back.

I still believe GB should fill their biggest needs first and this pick starts us on that solid draft plan. LB comes next after a tradeback. Then Safety, after a trade back. Get us 2-3 more 4ths & 5ths.

Don't be surprised if Gute doubles down if Jackson Powers-Johnson is available at 41. Drafting for interior offensive linemen makes more sense than moving Thom from a position he currently excels at. It's all about getting the best 5 on the field.
