WAIVER CLAIMS AND SIGNINGS

The Packers were not awarded any players on waiver claims (We don't know if they tried or not)
WR Malik Turner was claimed by the Dallas Cowboys.
WR Jake Kumerow was signed to the Bills' Practice Squad OR Active Roster (unclear)
OT John LeGlue was signed to the Saints' Practice Squad

2020 COVID-19 PRACTICE SQUAD RULES

  • 16 players on a practice squad — six more than previous seasons.
  • Six of the 16 slots can be used on players of ANY experience level.
  • Teams can protect up to four practice squad players per week (to be designated on Tuesdays) who cannot be signed by another team the remainder of the week.
  • Players can be activated on game day before the team announces their inactives. A player doesn’t necessarily have to be signed to the main roster for the move. This can happen with up to two practice squad players per week, but the same player can’t be elevated two weeks in a row and can only be elevated twice per season before he would have to be signed to the active roster his third time.

RESERVE/INJURED LIST

Treyvon Hester, Will Sunderland (can not return in 2020) per Ken Ingalls

Thanks, Jersey Al. Question: If a team wants to keep a particular player that has been cut, and that player is in obvious demand (e.g., John Lovett), how does the process work? I.e., Is it just between the clubs and the player to work out the best deal they can vs. other suitors or is there more to it?

If a player is eligible to be signed off a PS and another team wants to poach him, it's up to the player if he goes or not. And his current team can try to throw some money at him to make him stay. I know the Packers have done this with a few guys in the past.

Tore his ACL and concern was he is not ready. Also, new coaching staff was not as enamored as previous Giants staff.

No matter, he’s a Viking now.

So you don’t think Ryan Conolley would have been good for the Packers , a Wisconsin kid ? , some teams find ways to fill needs , I guess Oren Burks will shut down the run.

Well not much of a chance since the Vikings trumped us in waiver priority. Personally, I love a Wisconsin kid on the Packers when he is good for the team, but not just because. I quite like the upside if Martin and Summers personally. Maybe Burks will show maybe not, but I don’t see Connolly as having better potential than Martin and I don’t see him as guaranteed to be better now than what we have considering he is coming off a bad ACL injury.

I know he would fit in well with the requirement that Packer ILBs have an injury history, but in this case there are questions as to whether he is back to full fitness. He spent most of camp apparently working in the sidelines. It’s the Giants, so who knows, but that seems plausibly why he was released. Whether the Packers put in a claim for him I don’t know, but not much help now and never available since the Vikings had priority.

I quite like the swap of Kumerow For Foster. Maybe some teams do find ways after all.

What part of the waiver wire process is confusing to you?

When a player is out on waivers, like Conolley was, teams are able to put in a claim, based on their prior year's record. The worse the record, the higher you get to pick. The Vikings had a worse record than the Packers, which means they could put in a claim before the Packers. No matter how much the Packers would like to put in a claim on a player, if a team with a worse record, in this case the Vikings, puts in a claim, there is nothing the Packers could do.

This isn't rocket science.

I just got thru looking at this kids college highlights. He is gonna be pretty good and soon. He made a lot of heady plays and had good hands and crafty routes and separation. He has upside. Cowboys are already loaded at WR. They will have the favor returned I'm sure possibly at another position.

So you would rather keep a player we signed from the street over the one the team felt was better? Frankly, if Taylor was better I can’t get cut up about Turner. Presumably that’s how his prior team felt.

Perhaps he has other PS squad offers suggested or actual. He wasn’t claimed it seems, so he can make his choice if he has one and negotiate.

As of writing, as far as I can tell only 8 of 16 spots have been cited been filled.

So far I like who we have. Pleased to see Shepherd, Bagelton at WE, Samuels at CB. Krys Barnes May have some upside too, Tipa has it but needs weight room time and Williams can run if he can master the other aspects. Good start to the PS. The theme, upside and having showed some potential. I like that.

my hope is for GB to acquire possibly ILB Davis from the ponies cutting him; they definately need more depth in the middle...i'm sure Pettine says no, i have 2 or 3 hybrid safeties that can play in the box (litterer guys that can get nicked up though)

I read that Davis is a health question mark as he was coming off a knee injury. He was limited in camp for the Broncos and they didn’t think he would be ready to start the season. When healthy he was their leading tackler. Good against the run but struggled in coverage. Knee injury wouldn’t help that. Just something I read FWIW.

His face mask and hands disagree with you.....there is a lot of Shep love out there........He seems like a real nice guy but he is not an NFL player......I realize he has played well in practice but that just simply has to translate......Some think I am a power 5 snob but Lazard made a TON of plays in a major conference....He was one of the best WRs in the Big 12. Shepperd played against significantly inferior competition, half my family went to NDSU and they are all completely sold on the idea NDSU would beat everyone in the BIG except Ohio St......they would not.......it is fantasy land

I was losing it last year when Lazard was realeased and Sheppard made the team......Thankfully, Rodgers lobbied for Lazard to get on the field and the universe realigned.......I was absolutely certain cutting Lazard and keeping Shep was a mistake......it made me question Gute....Gutekunst is damn lucky Lazard was not claimed off waivers......and lucky we won that game. Had Lazard not gotten on the field and we lost to the Lions, I think there would be less Shepperd Truthers out there......
I realize how many small school guys have success.......But Lazard is better than Shepperd.........period....though many argued continually for Shepperd.......Frankly, Foster should be the first off the PS, he made big plays for the Bills, many are shocked he was released....I hope another team doesn't poach him from our PS.

Lazard is better than Shepherd? Lazard has played more but as receivers they couldn’t e more different. Silly. I like This guy as a pick up but get a little perspective.

Can the Packers sign players like Tramon, Veldheer and Clay to the PS for the 1st week then sign them to the 53 active players to avoid the 100% guarenteed contract? Isn't it then 25% after week one if they're signed? Just curious for some insight on this process. Thanks!

In theory they have six slots available to players with any level of experience, however, the pay is fixed at 12k per week for such players. May not entice even if Gute liked the idea.

Yes. The players would probably have to rely on a handshake that if they happened to get injured during their week on the PS that Gute would still sign them to and pay them a contract befitting their talent and status. The actual terms of the contract to be used for the 53 after week one could be all worked out but just not signed yet.

Yeah but it's a numbers thing. If a player didn't make the 53 cut but the team still liked him then it comes down to risking said player on waivers. Who's to say they still didn't want Kumerow, Turner and Laglue, all of whom were snatched up.

amen. It's such a unique year and with one of the best FO's in the NFL, we should be in a decent position to get better as the season moves on; sorta like how the schedule is shaking out for the start prior to our bye. 2 tough games on the road and with MLF at the helm hopefully 2-0 to start the division--that's what's initially important here...AND, dodging injuries when players may not have their bodies game ready yet.

I have to laugh when i consider all the idiotic hype over TB. Does anybody think the NFC South division is better than the AFC East?????? We'll just see how GB can do against Tom Terrific coming off their bye week.

Optimistic, love what you wrote here, "Waiting to let the coaching staff have a week eval of other players on the PS to see who would be most valuable to bring up to the 53 (Barnes v “Scoota”, Foster v Shep, Previlon, Veldheer? or Light)"; your point here hits the bullseye of how in depth/calculated the FO goes about their business.
When one looks @ the make-up of the PS, you can see GB has covered quite a gambit of positions. Most avid fans will note Gutey is still working the WR room hard. I am one to believe GB did not go for the glamour choice in the draft since when the top 4-6 players were already gone, Gutey stated there's no one else that can step in immediately and beat out who we already have. Let's also not forget, as he consistently reminds fans, "we've been conducting business the same way for years" in terms of getting to know what type of person these players are during the hiring process. I highly respect that, whoever will "make the best team" not necessarily the best players is what he's said.
