Will Svitek Preparing for Life After Football

In his first three seasons in the NFL, Will Svitek appeared in 16 games, including four starts at offensive tackle, a position he was learning to play at the professional level after playing defensive end at Stanford.

Svitek spent the 2008 season out of football before joining the Atlanta Falcons last season, starting two of 13 games.

Svitek hopes to play in the NFL for as long as he can, but the 6-6, 300-pound Prague native has twice taken advantage of the NFL's Business Management and Entrepreneurial Program, where NFL players spend a week at Harvard Business School and the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

After attending Harvard Business School in 2008, Svitek attended Wharton in February.

"It was pretty intensive. We basically went through what MBA students do condensed into four days," Svitek told the Ventura County Star. "The biggest thing I learned was everyone wants to dive into business and invest in business, but it takes so much analysis. You have to do your due diligence and be careful. There are so many examples of business plans that sound good and you learn one year later it fails."

The Wharton program "emphasized entrepreneurship and business building with an emphasis on real estate". Considering the recent real estate-fueled bankruptcies of Mark Brunell and Dermontti Dawson, the biggest thing Svitek learned during the program, is probably it's most important lesson.
