Texans to Sign DE Mark Anderson

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that free agent defensive end Mark Anderson will sign with the Houston Texans.

Anderson was released by the Chicago Bears on Tuesday.

A fifth-round pick out of Alabama by the Bears in 2006, the 6-4, 255-pound Anderson burst onto the NFL scene with 12 quarterback sacks as a rookie. Anderson moved into a starting role in 2007, but managed just five quarterback sacks before moving back to a role as a situational pass-rusher in 2008 and 2009, where he combined for 46 tackles and just 4.5 sacks.

Anderson has 8 tackles and no quarterback sacks in four games this season.

The Texans have been seeking pass-rush help after losing Connor Barwin for the season to a dislocated ankle. Despite the presence of defensive line coach Bill Kollar, Houston has been unable to lure defensive end Aaron Schobel, who played for Kollar in Buffalo and had 10 sacks for the Bills last year, back to the NFL.

Houston will need to make a corresponding roster move, and could jettison one of the two veteran defensive ends--Ryan Denney or Adewale Ogunleye--signed in recent weeks.
