Steelers Sign 2010 Picks Stevenson, Dwyer

The Pittsburgh Steelers officially announced the signings of third-round wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders and sixth-round wide receiver Antonio Brown, as well as the signings of fifth-round linebacker Sylvester Stevenson and sixth-round running back Jonathan Dwyer.

All four of the players signed three-year contracts.

To fit the players on the 80-man off-season roster, the Steelers waived seven players: Wide receiver Jason Chery, kicker Piotr Czech, linebacker Derrick Doggett, punter Adam Graessle, nose tackle Cordarrow Thompson, center Bradley Vierling, and cornerback Trae Williams.

Before he was the 166th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Stevenson was a four-year starter at Utah, totaling 269 tackles, including 24.5 for a loss and 9 quarterback sacks, during his career. Stevenson was a three-time All-Mountain West selection, including first-team honors after his senior season. The 6-2, 231-pound Stevenson ran a 4.71-40 at the Combine, and projects to inside linebacker in the Steelers' 3-4 defense.

Stevenson's immediate contributions will be on special teams.

A powerful, downhill runner, Dwyer (5-11, 229) ran for 3,226 yards and 35 touchdowns during his three-year career at Georgia Tech, earning first-team All-ACC honors and ACC Offensive Player of the Year in 2008.

Dwyer posted back-to-back 1,395-yard rushing seasons, earning second-team All-ACC honors in 2009, behind Clemson’s C.J. Spiller.

Despite Dwyer’s size, speed, and production, he slid to the 188th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. Dwyer is expected to back-up starter Rashard Mendenhall, and could see some carries in short-yardage situations.
