Shurmur The Favorite in Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns could have a head coach in place by Thursday, Peter King of Sports Illustrated reports.

St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur has emerged as the favorite to land the Browns' top coaching post, with the team expected to pair him with an experienced defensive coordinator.

Prior to joining the Rams, the 45-year old Shurmur spent ten seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, working under Andy Reid, a branch of Browns president Mike Holmgren's coaching tree.

Shurmur's uncle, Fritz Shurmur, was a defensive coordinator under Holmgren with the Green Bay Packers (1994-98) and Seattle Seahawks. Browns general manager Tom Heckert, worked with Pat Shurmur for eight seasons in Philadelphia.

After firing Eric Mangini, the Browns have interviewed Shurmur, Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, and New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. The Browns have also been linked to Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who worked with Holmgren in Green Bay.
