Sharper Underwent Microfracture Surgery

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that now that the New Orleans Saints have re-signed veteran safety Darren Sharper, it's been revealed that the five-time Pro Bowler underwent microfracture surgery on his knee.

As noted in last Friday's item about Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Victor Abiamiri, who also underwent microfracture surgery this off-season, the procedure involves the surgeon using a small pointed tool called an awl to make very small holes (microfractures) in the bone near the damaged cartilage, which prompts the bone to release the cells in your bones that build new cartilage.

Microfracture surgery is often a short-term fix to allow an athlete to continue his or her career.
