Seahawks Were Poised to Select Jimmy Clausen

The Seattle Seahawks were prepared to select Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen with the 14th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.

"Heard the Seahawks were definitely going to take Clausen at 14 but they were stunned Earl Thomas was still there. Couldn't pass him up.", Bedard posted on Twitter.

Despite being considered one of the most NFL-ready quarterbacks available in this year's draft class, Clausen has slid out of the first round, as only Oklahoma's Sam Bradford (St. Louis) and Florida's Tim Tebow (Denver) were chosen among the first 32 selections.

Though he never fulfilled his lofty goals of multiple national titles and Heisman trophies, Clausen was a three-year starter at Notre Dame, passing for over 8,000 yards and 60 touchdowns in 35 career games in South Bend. The 6-3, 222-pound quarterback from Oaks Christian Academy in Westlake Village, California is an accurate passer, but there are concerns about his ability to make all the throws at the next level, particularly throws downfield.

Clausen will likely hear his name called within the first hour of the second day of the 2010 NFL Draft. The Minnesota Vikings have the 34th overall pick and could draft Clausen as the future quarterback, which would allow him to spend a year as Brett Favre's understudy. The Kansas City Chiefs, who have the 36th pick, may also take Clausen, as their offensive coordinator, Charlie Weis, recruited Clausen to Notre Dame in 2006.

Beyond that, the Philadelphia Eagles (37th), Cleveland Browns (38th), Oakland Raiders (40th), and Buffalo Bills (41st) may find Clausen's availability too tempting to pass up.
