Seahawks to Re-Sign FB Quinton Ganther

The Seattle Seahawks will fill the open spot on their 53-man roster by re-signing fullback Quinton Ganther, a source confirmed on Tuesday.

Ganther takes the open roster spot created by Monday's release of running back Chris Henry.

A seventh-round pick (246th overall) out of Utah by the Tennessee Titans in 2006, the 5-9, 220-pound Ganther has rushed for 262 yards and three touchdowns with 15 receptions for 142 yards during 25 games over the last four seasons. Ganther set career highs in 2009 by rushing for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns, with 9 receptions for 99 yards for the Washington Redskins.

Seahawks running backs coach Sherman Smith coached Ganther in both Tennessee and Washington.

Originally signed by the Seahawks in March, Ganther spent the off-season, mini-camp, and training camp with the team, earning a spot on the 53-man roster at the start of the season. Ganther started one of two games before a knee injury sidelined him for their Week 3 game against the San Diego Chargers.

The Seahawks released Ganther on September 2.

Fullback Michael Robinson injured his hamstring during Sunday's 22-10 win over the Arizona Cardinals, keeping the Seahawks primarily in single-back sets in the second half. Robinson is considered questionable for this week's game against the Oakland Raiders, and Ganther's familiarity with the offense provides insurance in case Robinson can't play or is limited on Sunday.
