Seahawks Acquire Marshawn Lynch

Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports the Seattle Seahawks have acquired running back Marshawn Lynch from the Buffalo Bills.

According to Glazer, the Seahawks have traded a fourth-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, as well as a conditional draft choice in 2012 to acquire the 24-year old running back from Cal.

Lynch (5-11, 215) leads the Bills with 37 carries for 164 yards, but the former first-round pick out of Cal has been unhappy with his contract. Lynch has rushed for 2,765 yard and 17 touchdowns over the last 3+ seasons, adding 94 receptions for 670 yards and a touchdown out of the backfield.

Lynch earned a trip to the Pro Bowl following the 2008 season, but the presence of running backs Fred Jackson and 2010 first-round pick C.J. Spiller made Lynch expendable to the Bills.

Lynch adds a power-running element to a backfield that includes Justin Forsett, his former teammate at Cal, and Leon Washington. The arrival of Lynch likely spells the end of Julius Jones' career with the Seahawks.

Jones, who led the team in rushing in 2008 and 2009, dressed, but did not play in the team's Week 3 win over the San Diego Chargers, and was inactive in Sunday's 20-3 loss to the St. Louis Rams.

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports that Jones has been released.

Lynch is signed through the next season (2012 voids) at base salaries of $885,000 this season (prorated amount of $676,765), and $2.14 million in 2011.

@scrumptrulescent: The post has been updated with Lynch's contract status. Despite the reports, Lynch is not signed through 2013, nor is he signed through 2012.

As the 12th overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, Lynch signed a six-year contract. The sixth year in that deal (2012) voids if Lynch reached minimal playing-time requirements in any year, which Lynch has done.

His base salary in 2011, the final year of the deal, will increase by at least $1 million from its current amount of $1.14 million. Up to $750K could be added, depending on how he performs over the next 12 games.

You know, I understand not making this for a so-so player or someone who may not contribute. But this is someone who is pretty established as an effective player who would most likely contribute right away and could conceivably challenge Grant for the starting job next season (especially if Grant is slow/ineffective coming of the injury). The only real drawback I can see is some behavioral issues.

I don't pretend to know everything about this game or the players in it but I would really love to know why they didn't/couldn't pull the trigger on this deal. I wonder if Ted matched the offer and Buffalo went with the picks likely to be higher(wishful thinking).

Wow. How pissed are Pack fans right now. I know I am. A 4th in 2011 and a conditional pick in 2012. Not that expensive. Come on Ted.

Nah, a 4th round pick for a RB after a quarter of the season is a bad long-term deal, however attractive it may seem.

His contract numbers are seriously low and he's signed through 2013. It would have been a good investment....especially for a team that could contend for the NFC Championship.
