Saints to Sign FB Jason McKie

Free agent fullback Jason McKie will sign with the New Orleans Saints, reports Jeff Dickerson of ESPNChicago.com.

The move is not official, as the Saints will have to release a player to accommodate McKie on the 80-man off-season roster. The Saints presently have 80 players on its roster, as well as six unsigned 2010 NFL Draft picks and four unsigned restricted free agents.

McKie, 30, was released by the Chicago Bears on March 16 after seven seasons. The Bears had claimed McKie off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys in the summer of 2003. McKie began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent out of Temple with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2002, spending most of that first season on the Eagles' practice squad before being signed to the Cowboys' active roster.

McKie (5-11, 247) appeared in 87 games for the Bears, carrying the ball 29 times for 84 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also caught 68 passes for 364 yards and 3 touchdowns as a receiver.

Saints fullback Heath Evans is recovering from a torn ACL that ended his 2009 season. Behind Evans on the Saints' fullback depth chart are Marcus Mailei, who appeared in two games for the Saints last season, and Zak Keasey, who has appeared in 20 games over four NFL season with the Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers, last appearing in an NFL game in 2008. A triceps injury landed Keasey on injured reserve early in the 2008 season.

The Saints will hold their first "Organized Team Activity" sessions this week, with practices scheduled from Tuesday through Friday.
