Redskins Sign P Sam Paulescu

The Washington Redskins have signed punter Sam Paulescu, Chick Hernandez of CSNWashington reports.

Punter Hunter Smith has been released.

A former undrafted free agent out of Oregon State, Paulescu has a net punting average of 36.0-yards on 85 punts in 17 games with the Denver Broncos (2007), Dallas Cowboys (2008), and a 2009 season split between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Redskins.

Paulescu appeared in one game last season for the Redskins, who signed him out of concern for Smith's groin injury. Paulescu will serve as the holder, duties that Smith has held.

Smith failed to catch the snap during an extra point that would've sent Sunday's game against the Buccaneers into overtime. Washington lost 17-16, officially eliminating them from the post-season.
