Patriots Sign 2nd Round LB Brandon Spikes

New England Patriots second-round linebacker Brandon Spikes has signed a four-year contract, Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald reports.

Guregian reports the deal is worth $3.215 million dollars, and included a $950,000 signing bonus.

Spikes started 39 of his 47 games at the University of Florida, totaling 309 tackles, including 31.5 for a loss and 6.5 quarterback sacks. Spikes added six interceptions during his career, returning four for touchdowns (Two each in 2008 and 2009)

A team captain and three-time first-team All-SEC selection, Spikes earned first-team All-American honors after his breakout season in ’08.

Spikes did not perform well during pre-draft workouts, but his film and production were undeniable, and enough to sell Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. Spikes will push Gary Guyton for the starting inside linebacker spot next to Jerod Mayo, and will play a major role on New England’s special teams units
