Report: Shawn Merriman Won't Re-Sign With Bills

Linebacker Shawne Merriman was not happy to have been claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills, and will not re-sign with the team, reports John Czarnecki of FOXSports.com.

The winless Bills claiming Merriman was a bit of a surprise. Considering first-year general manager Buddy Nix's history with Merriman, though, one could understand why Nix would use this two-month stretch to sell Merriman on the idea of reigniting his career in western New York as the pass-rushing edge linebacker the team's 3-4 defense desperately needs.

A restricted free agent earning $3.269 million this season, Merriman was waived off injured reserve by the San Diego Chargers last week. Merriman has reported to the Bills, who will pay him $1.73 million for the remainder of the season, but will not play today against the Chicago Bears in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

"I’m more than happy to be in the position that I’m in now to be going forward with these guys, as a Buffalo Bill," Merriman said during an introductory press conference on Saturday.

Given Czarnecki's report, and Merriman's villainous reputation, this quote from Saturday will likely be used against the linebacker, should he sign with another team, like the Miami Dolphins, in free agency next off-season. That said, Merriman wouldn't be the first athlete to publicly say the opposite of what he's thinking about a particular situation, especially one he thinks has a shelf life of two months.

Then there's this: If Merriman shows signs of regaining his Pro Bowl form of 2005-07, the Bills could always use the franchise tag on him in the off-season.
