Mawae Tees Off on Haynesworth

NFL Players Association president and free agent center Kevin Mawae teed off on Albert Haynesworth on Sirius NFL Radio.

Via Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com:

"I mean, if you don't want to be there don't take the $21 million contract," Mawae told Sirius NFL Radio hosts Bryan McGovern and Gil Brandt. "How things turned out it's no surprise to guys that have played with him in Tennessee."

Mawae's willingness to throw the obvious culprit(s) under the bus--the NFLPA president's stance on rookie contracts is asinine--aside, the second part of his statement is the one that deserves the most attention.

Mawae, a former teammate, echoes a sentiment expressed by his current teammates, which should be seen as a bright red flag to any future teammates: Albert Haynesworth, big contract or no big contract, is not a person who can be depended upon.

Haynesworth is not a "great, great player" as ESPN's John Clayton described him when advocating for the Seattle Seahawks to seriously consider acquiring him during an appearance on the Brock & Salk show on 710 ESPN Seattle. No, Haynesworth is a great, great talent who plays when it suits him to play, and adding him to your organization is a humongous risk, regardless of how the low the cost is to acquire him, or how cheaply and quickly you can get out from under his enormous contract.

Haynesworth is a fast-food football player: Easy to acquire, feels good initially, but the quicker you can get him out of your system, the better off you'll be.
