Marshall Agrees to $47.5M Extension with Dolphins

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports wide receiver Brandon Marshall has agreed to a four-year, $47.5 million dollar contract extension with the Miami Dolphins.

That money is in addition to the $2.521 million dollars Marshall will make on his one-year, restricted free agent tender, which Marshall signed yesterday to facilitate his trade to Miami. Between his extension and tender, Marshall's five-year haul will be slightly north of $50 million dollars.

Schefter adds that Marshall will receive $24 million dollars in guarantees, , and Marshall will reportedly receive $29 million dollars in the first three years of the deal.

In terms of APY, the 5-years/$50 million dollars equals $10M per year, which is equivalent to what Larry Fitgerald received from the Arizona Cardinals (4-years, $40M) in his current contract. However,  Marshall's 4-years, $47.5M in "new money", a $11.875M average, is by far the highest total ever paid to wide receiver.

So by that metric, Marshall has the crown.

In terms of guaranteed money, which with a player like Marshall--who is as volatile off-the-field as he is explosive on it-- might be the more pertinent metric, Fitzgerald's contract is still the standard-bearer. $32.1 million dollars of Fitzgerald's contract, $8.025M per year, is guaranteed, while Marshall's contract reportedly has $24M, or $6M per year, guaranteed.

Any way you slice it, Marshall, and his agent, Kennard McGuire, got the $10M per year deal they were seeking, and presumably they got more of it upfront than the Broncos were ever willing to spend.

We'll go over the finer details, when they become available.
