Lions K Jason Hanson to Undergo Surgery

Detroit Lions kicker Jason Hanson will have surgery on his left knee today, John Niyo of the Detroit News reports.

Niyo adds that the surgery is characterized as minor, and is similar to a procedure the 39-year old Hanson underwent last August, which he was able to return from by the start of the regular season.

Undrafted rookie Aaron Pettrey (Ohio State) is the only other kicker on the roster, so it would not be surprising if the Lions brought in another veteran for training camp and the pre-season. When Hanson injured in the 2009 pre-season opener, the Lions brought in Billy Cundiff to split the duties with Swayze Waters.

Cundiff is now with the Baltimore Ravens, while Waters is in camp with the Oakland Raiders.
