Colts Sign 4th Round G Jacques McClendon

ESPN's Paul Kuharsky reports the Indianapolis Colts have signed fourth-round guard Jacques McClendon.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

McClendon started 27 of his 49 games at the University of Tennessee, mostly at the right guard position. The 6-2, 308-pound McClendon is a road-grader in the running game, using his brute strength (37 reps on the bench press, benched 645 pounds as a junior) to his advantage to clear holes in the running game.

McClendon struggled to stay in the Vols’ starting lineup, and his weight will need to be monitored at the next level. McClendon was the only offensive lineman Bill Polian drafted after criticizing the lines’ performance in Super Bowl XLIV, but McClendon is not expected to start in 2010, and will likely vie for a starting job in 2011 while backing up at each spot on the interior offensive line, including center.

The Colts still have seventh-round defensive tackle Ricardo Mathews, third-round cornerback Kevin Thomas, second-round linebacker Pat Angerer, and first-round defensive end Jerry Hughes to sign before opening up training camp on August 1.

Signing Thomas, who is expected to miss the entire season with a knee injury, isn't an urgency.
