Chiefs Sign TE Cody Slate

The Kansas City Chiefs announced the signing of undrafted free agent tight end Cody Slate.

Slate (6-2, 240) caught 199 passes for 2,619 yards and 23 touchdowns during a four-year career at Marshall University that was cut short by a torn ACL last November. Slate led the Thundering Herd in receiving in 2006--the first freshman to do so since Randy Moss in 1996--and 2007, and finished second in 2008 and 2009, though his eight touchdown catches in '08 were a team-high.

An All-Conference USA selection in each of his four years, Slate was unable to do any speed or agility drills during his Pro Day on March 17, but did post 27 reps on the bench press.

As Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star noted, tight end is a position of need on the Chiefs, and Slate could be a guy to keep an eye on this summer.
