Chargers Sign P Ricky Schmitt to Futures Deal

The San Diego Chargers have signed left-footed punter Ricky Schmitt to a "Reserve/Futures" contract, a source confirmed on Thursday.

Schmitt (6-3, 210) played his college ball at Shepherd, a Division II school in West Virginia. Undrafted, Schmitt has had stints with the Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders, and Tennessee Titans.

Schmitt appeared in one game for the 2009 49ers, connecting on two-of-three field goal attempts and recording one touchback in five kickoffs.

Because he is left-footed, NFL teams often bring Schmitt in for a workout to help their punt return units prepare for left-footed punter in upcoming weeks. Schmitt worked out for the Chargers in December.

Chargers punter Mike Scifres is a three-time Pro Bowler, but like everyone affiliated with the team's special teams units, struggled in 2010, posting the lowest net average (30.8 yards) of his career. Scifres also had a career-low in punts downed inside the opponents' 20-yard line (13) and had four of his punts blocked.
