Chargers Sign 5th Round QB Jonathan Crompton

Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports the San Diego Chargers have signed fifth-round quarterback Jonathan Crompton.

La Canfora reports the deal is for four years.

Crompton started 19 of his 35 games at the University of Tennessee, taking over as the starter in 2008. Overall, Crompton completed 55.3% of his 629 pass attempts for 4,187 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions during his career.

A 2010 Scouting Combine snub, the 6-3, 222-pound Crompton's draft stock skyrocketed throughout the off-season, beginning with the Texas vs. the Nation game and capped off by an impressive Pro Day workout conducted by former NFL head coach Sam Wyche and witnessed by scouts from half of the league's teams.

Crompton is expected to replace Charlie Whitehurst as the Chargers' third-string quarterback, and will be a young quarterback for head coach Norv Turner to develop into an NFL starter, in San Diego or elsewhere.

Crompton is the first of the Chargers' six picks in the 2010 NFL Draft to sign a contract.
