Bucs GM Apologizes to Donald Penn

Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik apologized to unsigned restricted free agent offensive tackle Donald Penn for comments Dominik made earlier this week about Penn's weight.

"I was looking forward to tonight. I had an opportunity to sit down with Donald Penn...and I apologized to him," Dominik said, according to Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times.

While speaking to Buccaneers season-ticket holders on Wednesday, Dominik said that he was disappointed in Penn's conditioning, indicating that it was the reason why Penn hadn't received a long-term extension from the club.

"Yeah. I’m really disappointed. When you think about a left tackle and how important that position is especially to a young franchise quarterback,And that guy during the season gains 40 pounds and basically turns his back to nutrition and keeping himself in shape. That’s disappointing to me. Rightfully so. I’m just being blatantly honest with you. And I expected better from him", Dominik said in a piece of audio that was recorded by WhatTheBuc.net, a Buccaneers' fansite.

Dominik told Stroud that he wasn't aware he was being recorded.

"Donald is an important member of this team and a guy I'm extremely fond of," Dominik told Stroud tonight. "We had a good heart-to-heart conversation and I was glad he came down for the fans tonight..we're all on the same page and it is what it is.

"The fact that I made some public statements about my feelings and I didn't think that was fair," Dominik said. "Regarding his weight. I didn't think that was fair to him."
