Broncos Claim RB Kolby Smith Off Waivers

The Denver Broncos announced that they have been awarded running back Kolby Smith off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Undrafted rookie linebacker Korey Bosworth and first-year punter A.J. Trapasso were released.

A fifth-round pick (148th overall) out of Louisville by the Chiefs in 2007, Smith ran for 540 yards on 162 carries with three touchdowns in his 27 games over the last three seasons. Smith added 34 receptions for 209 yards as a receiver out of the backfield, and seven tackles on special teams.

After finishing second on the team in rushing as a rookie, knee and ankle injuries have limited Smith to just 11 games over the last two seasons.

Smith joins a Broncos' running back depth chart that has 2009 first-round pick Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter at the top, followed by J.J. Arrington, Bruce Hall, and Toney Baker.

Smith is signed through the 2010 season, with a base salary of $545,000.
