49ers Release CB Keith Smith, Waive Brandon Long

The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have released veteran cornerback Keith Smith, and waived first-year linebacker Brandon Long.

A third-round pick (73rd overall) out of McNeese State by the Detroit Lions in 2004, the 5-11, 191-pound Smith signed with the 49ers last November after being released by the Lions as part of their final roster cutdown. Smith appeared in three games for the 49ers, totaling 5 tackles, including three on special teams.

In 74 games over the last six seasons, Smith has 151 tackles, 1 quarterback sack, and four interceptions.

Long (6-3, 254) went undrafted out of Michigan State in 2009. After agreeing to join the 49ers, Long failed a physical (foot) and spent last season out of football. Long signed a two-year deal with the 49ers on April 30 after participating in their post-draft mini-camp on a tryout basis.
