49ers Name Taylor Mays the Starting Strong Safety

San Francisco 49ers second-round safety Taylor Mays has been named the team's starting strong safety.

Mays, the 49th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, started his first NFL game in place of Michael Lewis, who has asked the team for his release. The 6-3, 230-pound Mays had a game-high 11 tackles and recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown in the 49ers' 16-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

Prior to Sunday, the former USC standout had a pair of special teams tackles on his NFL resume.
