49ers Clear First (of Many) Hurdles to New Stadium

Less than 20,000 voters in Santa Clara, California approved Measure J, which frees up $114 million dollars in taxpayer money towards the proposed construction of a $937 million dollar stadium for the San Francisco 49ers.

Key word: Proposed.

The York family and NFL still need to come up with the $823 million dollars to build the stadium, which is far from a slam dunk.

Mark Purdy of the San Jose Mercury News would be stunned if it didn't get done, citing Jed York's youthful energy and drive to get a new stadium built.

San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom said the city will continue with their plans for a stadium site at the Hunt Points Shipyard redevelopment project, perhaps the only chance the city has of keeping the 49ers within city limits.
