What are the Packers' long-term plans for the offensive line

After the release of Billy Turner, what's the plan up front?

MARK HOFFMAN/MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL/USA TODAY

Right tackle Billy Turner turned out to be a cap casualty for the Green Bay Packers and was officially released last Monday as part of the team's effort to be under the cap by the start of the new league year, on Wednesday.
Brian Gutekunst has added offensive line pieces via the draft and free agency every season since he was hired as the general manager in 2018, so it's fair to expect that he'll put more players in place for the next few weeks and months. For now, let's analyze what are the options for each position.

LT
David Bakhtiari
Yosh Nijman
Elgton Jenkins

David Bakhtiari is the long-term plan at left tackle. He will be 31 in September, but offensive linemen tend to age well, so the Packers have no reasons to be afraid - and they showed that restructuring his contract. Yosh Nijman should receive his ERFA tender to be around and be a swing tackle. Elgton Jenkins showed in 2021 that he can be a good option if Bahtiari isn't available.

LG
Jon Runyan

Elgton Jenkins is the best left guard on the roster, but Billy Turner's release might indicate that Packers' plan is to move Jenkins to right tackle full-time. In this case, Jon Runyan is a solid and inexpensive alternative to start at left guard. The problem here is that there are few depth options, so it might be important to re-sign unrestricted free agent Lucas Patrick, who can play every interior position.

C
Josh Myers
Jake Hanson
Michael Menet

You can make the case that the Packers should have drafted Creed Humphrey, but Josh Myers had a good rookie season when healthy. Now, the expectation is that he'll be available. Jake Hanson and Michael Menet are depth options, but Lucas Patrick should also be a good addition here if he comes back.

RG
Royce Newman

Newman was a fourth-round pick last offseason and played most of the season as the starting right guard. He had ups and downs, something natural for such a young player. With one season under his belt, the expectation is that he'll develop as a solid starter. With few depth options, Gutekunst might be forced to draft interior offensive linemen or find cheap free agent players.

RT
Elgton Jenkins
Yosh Nijman
Cole Van Lanen

Elgton Jenkins is an All-Pro left guard, but he also can be a top tackle. And if the Packers are willing to pay him as an elite offensive lineman, they better be ready to play him at the more valuable position. Nijman, as the swing tackle, is the backup plan and may be the starter to initiate the season because of Jenkins' knee injury. If they want to reinforce the position, Gutekunst might go back and re-sign Dennis Kelly, who played poorly against the San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs, but generally had a good season after Billy Turner's injury.

I trully believe that Packers knows exactly what they will do (despite idiotic solution in the last divisional play off game). I do not expect more than 2 lineman through draft. It is more likely to sign veteran lineman than use draft capital with many needs Packers has all over the roster.

Nijman/Jenkins, Runyon, Myers, Newman, Nijman/Jenkins after this season. Bakh starts at left this one.

I would challenge the assumption that Bakhtiari is the long term LT. He could be released after 2022 and we’d gain $3 million. He could be released after 2023 and we’d save $18 million.

He’s 31 with an injury history. He has played in 13 games since 2019.

I could see a future Oline that featured Jenkins at LT.

Good point about DBakh. The way he struggled coming back from this knee injury, it would not be a surprise if he doesn't get back to playing like he was pre-injury.

If TT did get one thing correct it was with the Oline - he moved on from Marco Rivera and Mike Wahle because they overpaid and got into cap hell. I would expect that to happen here after 2 years if we do not get results - it appears that we have more to work with now than when TT was first in charge.

I would argue they've already done that--for the most part--on the OL. They've only got one guy under contract who is later than his first contract (or equivalent for those who were brought in as UDFAs or cuts). Admittedly, that guy makes a lot of money, but there was a time not too long ago where the Packers were carrying 3-4 hefty contracts on the OL.

"What are the Packers' long-term plans for the offensive line?"

Answer: Draft and Develop

It will always be the answer long-term.

And, in my view, they should stay away from 3rd contracts. Those always get you in trouble. Now, Bakh is a great player, but he gets the big contract, gets hurt, and may not ever come back as good as before. A repeating story with most offensive linemen.

Packers front office has done a good job of drafting offensive linemen and also adding free agents. Six were drafted in two years, and the depth saved the team when a couple of starters missed the season with serious injuries. I don't see Lucas Patrick coming back though, as there are a few young guys who will compete for roster spots. Jenkins will miss the first half of the year, and there will be at least one new addition from the draft. Myers and Newman should improve, and hopefully Nijman can start at RT. This is an area of the team that is very important, and Green Bay seems to make the right call most of the time. Bulaga was released today by the Chargers after playing in 1 game last year and 10 the year before. Hopefully there are little to no injuries on the line this year.

Turner surprised me. But it isn't a surprise if he didn't want to play T. Was he another player that hurt his knee, because of the switch to LT? Thats my bet. I believe; He just doesn't want to play Tackle. And his next team will have him inside again. If he refused to move on his contract. He knew they would release him sooner, than later. And he can play where he's best. Runyan is officially in their plans. I expect a tackle or IOL to be drafted.

Turner has been solid at RT. Would have preferred he stayed where we already knew he worked best.

I expect a mid-round tackle, some UDFA options, and a vet patch this year. Players like Jenkins that can play WELL anywhere are rare, and they need at least 2 more spot starter options so they have the like solidified till he is back and for life after Bahk if that is the plan.

The OL is in good shape. There are some question on the health of Bak and Jenkins,l butl Runyon, Myers, Newman and Nijman are viable short and longl term solutions. The key is viable backups when injuries occur and they will. Somehow, either through betting drafting or betters coaching, I feel much better than the last few years of TT and McCarthy.

The Packers OL play very well every year...during regular season. However, they fall apart in post season against elite defenses. This holds true all the way to Favre and Pack against the Giants.

Everyone thinks OL is fine but I disagree. Adequate yes! Three of lineman are very young and will improve. However, to what degree? The Pack needs at minimum one more quality OL and preferably at OT. Patrick needs to go as ADEQUATE but cannot handle elite players regularly and hit his top upside. He will not get better and really is a center and not guard. For him to backup Myers for what it will take to sign him forget it. Meaning they could use two more quality linemen one on outside, and an interior lineman.

Still think depending on players like Rasul, Jaire, Amos, Jenkins, and Tonyan the biggest needs are at DL and WR.

I don't think the Packer OL falls apart against elite D's unless you call season ending injuries to your top O lineman as falling apart.

In the 2019 NFCCG, the Packers OL couldn't get on the field because the D was letting SF run all over them.

In 2020 NFCCG, the Packers were without Bakht and really missed him in the Redzone and lost by 5. Losing him (and AJ for the second half) really hurt.

This year, the OL was without its two best players, Bahkt and Jenks.

The O line is a strength of the Packers.

There's a reason why elite defensive units are called elite, too.

Thanks for making my point Lambeau! The OL hasn't played to the level needed to win in playoffs regardless of reason. Yes, injuries happen!

They need an infusion of talent to go along with improving play from the youngsters.

Yes it's our shitty luck with injuries plus self inflicted with starting Kelly this time around. Never seem to have our full OL for a big game.

I'll never understand how MLF thought Turner at LT and Kelly at RT was our best option, when Nijman showed all year he could play LT at a high level.

I expect Gutey to take 2 OL in this draft. It is deep at OL and having Preston and Campbell back at Edge and ILB increases the likelihood he will pick one high, even at 28 if one of the studs drop to him.

There should also be good OL value on day 3. Packers have 2-4th rounders.

Several plug and play OL in this draft at the top.

Is there anything left in JC Tretter's tank? Cut by Cleveland and started all games last season. He might be a good backup center at the right price - or maybe win the center Job?

Bakh --- Runyan/Jenkins --- Meyers --- Newman/Runyan --- Nijman/Jenkins

I think that is the 2022 line-up.

Jenkins will not be back for the beginning of the season. Assuming everyone is healthy when he gets back I still think his preferred position should be LG. The run game took a step backwards with average play at guard. Nijman has gained some experience and should be given first shot at RT. He is just too damn huge to not give him a chance. If he ups his technique he could be a force in the run game and less of a question mark in the passing game.

I agree that Bakh could be a salary cap/injury cut in the future. But what he put on tape against Detroit was still the best LT play we saw all season last year. More time to recover, I think he will be good to go this summer.

MY PLAN would be to assemble the best, and deepest, unit in the league. It’s a long season. Guys get beat down and even seriously injured and your #9 guy might be a starter in the playoffs. In my mind, that means adding to what we’ve got already

Left tackle is most important, and by the opener we’ll have Bakhtiari backed up by Nijman. That’s good.
Right tackle is Nijman? backed up by Van Laanen?
Across the middle we’re OK with Runyon, Myers, Newman…..but where’s the depth?

I think you could make the argument that we could use a Day 2 guy on the OL. Right now, we’re minus Turner, Jenkins, and probably Patrick from last year’s unit. And probably another guy on Day 3 .

I am very much okay with Nijman at RT. I suspect Runyon could play RT in a pinch as well since he was a tackle for his entire career at Michigan. Van Lanen needs to adds strength - not sure if he is a RT or an IOL.

Given that this draft is deep in OL and the Packers could use more depth, I will be surprised if the Packers don't invest at least a couple of day 3 picks in the OL.

Patrick is a lunch box kind of guy who is limited talent wise, but he is a competitor who will sock you in the mouth kind of guy. Basically, an over achiever and the type you always want on your team.

The Packers got his best and will miss the OL depth he brings but at end of the day they need OL talent a notch or two above what Patrick brings. As someone mentioned I see a day 2 draft pick, as well as at minimum a day 3 draft pick.

Thanks Patrick for your service and may Rodgers continue to own da Bears!
