Way-Too-Early Packers 53-Man Roster Prediction - 2023 Edition

A preliminary look at what Green Bay's roster could look like entering the 2023 season.

The way-too-early 53-man roster prediction is back for its second year, and in 2023, making this team is going to be tough.

More specifically, it’s going to be hard to make this roster as an undrafted rookie. That’s significant in Green Bay, where at least one UDFA has traditionally made the team.

The Packers have so many draft picks from the last couple years on their current squad, including 13 from the most recent draft. Gutekunst tends to keep his draft picks on the 53 even if they don’t end up contributing at all as rookies.

With that being said, here’s the full roster prediction:

Quarterback (2): Sean Clifford, Jordan Love

Given the depth in other areas, requiring more roster spots as a result, it feels unlikely the Packers keep three QBs. That means Danny Etling is the odd man out, the only non-Packers draft pick in the room.

Running back (3): A.J. Dillon, Aaron Jones, Lew Nichols III

The training camp competition for RB3 is going to be one to watch, with Patrick Taylor and Tyler Goodson both providing strong competition to Nichols, but ultimately, the draft pick wins the roster spot, with Taylor and Goodson both likely practice squad candidates.

It’s been a while since the Packers carried a true fullback on the roster, and that doesn’t change this year, leaving undrafted rookie Henry Pearson on the outside looking in.

Wide receiver (6): Romeo Doubs, Grant DuBose, Jayden Reed, Samori Toure, Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks

Leaving out Bo Melton is a tough call, but in the end, the Packers go with their six picks from the last two drafts.

Green Bay claimed Melton off Seattle’s practice squad last season and he was a 2022 draft pick. Green Bay would probably want Melton back on the practice squad and will hope someone doesn’t snipe him as they did.

Tight end (4): Tyler Davis, Josiah Deguara, Tucker Kraft, Luke Musgrave

Davis has competition for his job in Austin Allen, Nick Guggemos and Camren McDonald, but his experience in Matt LaFleur’s system and contribution on special teams keeps him in Green Bay for another season.

Offensive line (10): David Bakhtiari, Jake Hanson, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Royce Newman, Yosh Nijman, Sean Rhyan, Jon Runyan Jr., Zach Tom, Rasheed Walker

For the first time in Brian Gutekunst’s tenure as the Packers GM, he didn’t select a single offensive lineman in the 2023 NFL draft. The reason is partially the depth of the current group.

The Packers have some interesting undrafted players in the offensive line room, including three towering tackles in Caleb Jones, Luke Tenuta and Kadeem Telfort, but it’s difficult to see any of them making the cut.

Defensive line (6): Karl Brooks, Kenny Clark, Jonathan Ford, T.J. Slaton, Colby Wooden, Devonte Wyatt

Chris Slayton, who spent last year on Green Bay’s practice squad, could have something to say in this position battle, but the draft picks win out once again.

Jonathan Ford made the roster a year ago and didn’t play a single defensive snap, but he should see the field this season with experienced players in Dean Lowry and Jarran Reed out the door.

EDGE (4): Kingsley Enagbare, Justin Hollins, Preston Smith, Lukas Van Ness

The assumption here is that Rashan Gary, recovering from a November ACL tear, will not be ready to start the 2023 season and will be placed either on injured reserve or the PUP list.

Undrafted rookie Brenton Cox Jr. is a name to watch this summer. His talent would certainly have seen him drafted, maybe even on day two, but his stock plummeted after being dismissed from both Georgia and Florida during his college career.

If he can stay on the straight and narrow, Cox could push for a roster spot, but with four solid options already in situ and Gary to return at some point, he has to settle for a place on the practice squad.

Inside linebacker (5): De’Vondre Campbell, Tariq Carpenter, Isaiah McDuffie, Quay Walker, Eric Wilson

Carpenter has made the move from safety to linebacker as the Packers look to find a defensive home for him, while allowing him to primarily contribute on special teams. Wilson was brought back in the off-season and is another core special teamer.

Cornerback (5): Jaire Alexander, Rasul Douglas, Shemar Jean-Charles, Keisean Nixon, Carrington Valentine

As with Rashan Gary, this assumes Eric Stokes is still sidelined with injury by the start of the season. When he eventually returns, Jean-Charles could be collateral damage. SJC has hardly seen the field since being a fifth-round draft pick in 2021.

Safety (5): Rudy Ford, Anthony Johnson Jr., Dallin Leavitt, Jonathan Owens, Darnell Savage

This position is incredibly difficult to figure out. The Packers have so many safeties on the roster and all of them are, as the kids say: “mid”.

Ordinarily, special teams may be the logical separator in that situation, but most of the group contributes to that area, so it’s not as easy to dismiss a player on those grounds.

In the end, the decision comes down to keeping Leavitt or Tarvarius Moore, who was added in the off-season, with these two players offering the least on defense.

While Leavitt is widely viewed as someone you absolutely don’t want on the field as a safety, he is an established presence and a tone-setter on special teams, and one of Rich Bisaccia’s guys.

When re-signing with Green Bay this spring, Leavitt also received $100,000 more in guaranteed money than Moore, who is only guaranteed $50,000.

Kicker (1): Anders Carlson

Gutekunst made it abundantly clear he drafted Carlson at Bisaccia’s behest. Unless the rookie truly stinks up the joint in training camp, he’s going to make the team.

Punter (1): Pat O’Donnell

O’Donnell was fine a year ago and it’s unlikely the Packers bring anyone in during camp to compete with him, or that the new guy beats him out in that scenario.

Long snapper (1): Matt Orzech

Get ready for a long snapper battle this summer! Broughton Hatcher was recently added to compete with Orzech, spelling the end of Jack Coco’s time in Green Bay, but the experienced Orzech should win out.

The only point of contention I have here is the 5 ILB and 4 OLB. Why would you roster that many ILBs when in todays NFL you play the majority of your defensive snaps in nickel? I think moving carpenter to ILB is a sign that he wont be making this roster unless he shocks everyone with an unexpected jump. IMO, 1 more EDGE could help keep the pass rushers fresh and more effective. I know the special teams angle makes it enticing, but we also have a defense that needs to improve as well. Outside of that point, I think you are pretty much on the money. GoPackGo!

Carpenter is a hybrid S/LB. He is a core STer.

ILBs are often important special teams players, so the Packers are exactly the kind of team that would keep five of them. I think Carpenter's move to ILB may be geared more toward keeping him than cutting him. At the back end of the roster, there's less competition at ILB than at safety right now. OLBs can always be called up from the practice squad when there are injuries. I don't think there are usually five OLBs active on game day unless #5 is a core special teamer.

As this is "Way-Too-Early Packers 53-Man Roster Prediction" I'll take it as it is. Way to Early Prediction.

I believe Tavarius Moore is better safety than Savage, but he, because of whatever reason was from 9ers pushed to play put of position. They still kept him till this 2023 season.

But, as you wrote - to early to be able to make sure list...

No to Lew Nichols lll. PS
Wr - I’d still go after Johan Dotson.
But for now the 6 work.
Jake Hanson? You can’t be serious.
No to Jon Ford - FA Veteran will be signed.
No to Wilson. And Dallin Leavitt.

They will have to sniff out a WR post cut-downs. He will not trade future picks to secure the depth. If Ford is a NT, he may stick, but best to look for another DT. They are relying on Reed to stay upright from the slot. Not my guy.
The Edge needs six guys, so Garvin stays, unless Cox beats him out. None of the ILBs are run stuffers. Better hope Stokes shows up a changed man. The Safety spot is a mess.

The Reed pick was the mistake of the draft.
Just a Reach. And a blown pick.
We took Van Ess because he was the Top edge
on their board. Think about that.
Gutey took the BPA @13.
But he couldn't do the same; with the Safety position or Wr.
I say he is purposely blowing picks so he has a job in the NFL.
Think about how many dumb trades that haven't worked out.
He's already in trouble in Love fails.
And if you keep trading back for a WR.
He should have taken one at 13

Felix will be the top Edge when the dust settles in January. He should have moved down in the first for him, or taken Broderick to hold the right flank. Tillman and Kraft are still my # two picks. Read'em and weep. The Coaching will be exposed as the season moves on. Remember, Love doesn't have to re-up if he wants out of Gutey world in a couple years. I believe Nicholls gets a spot. Fast Step and go runner. He's a true btw the tackles guy. MAC Football is not a step down. He could have played for Michigan.

IMO, Lew Nichols will have to stand out, in camp, to beat out either Patrick Taylor or Tyler Goodson. Taylor has done everything he was asked to do when he played. Goodson has a ton of potential. He needs to step up in camp to make this team. Lew Nichols looks like he could be another Jamaal Williams. These position battles are going to be fun to watch and see who stands out. GO PACK, GO!

You beat me to it. Patrick Taylor has been more than solid as the #3 RB. I don't think Nichols will beat him out unless he plays so well in preseason that he won't be safe on the practice squad. And even if he DOES play well in the preseason: How often have we seen RBs look good in preseason, only to get cut, and nobody else wants them either?

Quarterback (2): Same, but if Clifford falters in the preseason, Etling puts him on the PS
Running back (3): I think Goodson and Taylor are both better; Lew Nichols to the PS
FB (1): I consider DeGuara a FB; Henry Pearson is his PS backup (although I think Camren McDonald would also be good at it. Maybe they look at Nichols here.)
Wide receiver (6): Agree, painfully, as I liked Melton more than Toure last draft. Could easily have an injury affect the group.
Tight end (3): Exactly my thoughts (but DeGuara is listed as a FB)
Offensive line (10): Keeping Hanson, Newman, Rhyan, and Walker, over Jones and Tenuta seems unlikely. With several guys who can play multiple positions, they could easily keep fewer.
Defensive line (5): Ford was terrible in college and during last preseason. Keep another S instead.
EDGE (4): Same, but Cox is on the PS at best this year. Why risk a 53 on him? It will be interesting to see who Gary pushes out--probably a different position.
Inside linebacker (4-5): Probably the same, but Carpenter will be competing with the top ST safeties.
Cornerback (5): Probably the same, but lots of questions about SJ-C, when Stokes returns, he's gone.
Safety (6): Same but add Moore, and I’d keep Innis Gaines over one of the 10 OL.
Kicker (1) Punter (1) Same.
Long snapper (1): Whoever wins it.

In a season where the one thing that is obvious is a desire for competition, you are right, this is way too early. My only hope is that the competition at the back end results in a roster reflecting merit. I think we will see quite a few surprises.

The thing I like about this year, if good play genuinely is the determining factor for opportunity, is that I see a real potential for true competition at various spots. In fact, outside of perhaps ILB, TE and true CB, multiple spots could be up for grabs by players like Melton, Caleb Jones, Moore, Cox and so on. Even at TE and CB, there is a real chance a guy like Allen or Valentine forces a change.

If we are to get better, a number of borderline players need either to make a real jump or be outplayed. I think that’s exactly what the Gute has set up to occur this summer. It should be fun. Let’s hope we are fortunate in terms of health. I think this prediction won’t be all that close, beyond the obvious, by September.

See if Nixon can play Safety during the Summer Session. (?) My intuition hopes Anthony Johnson takes one of the starting spots. A hard rock to crack in Packertown, where they tend to hold back on the better player and keep some of the dead wood from his drafts.

I'd like to think they could do better than Hanson on the interior--don't sleep on Chuck Filiaga who is a capable power G.

Not a Melton believer, myself, so I'm not averse to seeing him left off. They can only keep so many special teamers and they've loaded up on S prospects to fill those roles...which makes it tough for Melton to crack the 53. With that in mind, they've got several ST specialist who don't generate much on O or D. Leavitt can go in favor of Moore, who I think you're underselling here as a S...I'd even argue that Owens might make Rudy Ford's seat pretty hot.

At this point my guess at S is Savage, Ford, Moore, Owens with Johnson and Sapp/Gaines to the PS. Savage likely plays some DB.

Ford, Moore and Owens are all genuinely good STers who, on paper, look capable of time on D. That’s the source of change I think we are hoping for—moving on from ST only types to players we think can also legitimately contribute in other phases as role players if not starters.

The question is, in addition to whether guys like Wiggins can force change, which of those can start or combine to to take the bulk of snaps effectively, if any?

I agree with you on Hanson. Absent a revelation, he’s on the out at guard or C, or should be, in my opinion. I also think the prediction was wrong on Caleb Jones individually, and pure tackle numbers. They are developing there. If Rhyan shows up, we still need to improve interior depth. Newman may yet show, especially if left at RG, but we should not bet on it. Nor should we just hand Myers the C role.

I’m hoping Tom gets a shot at C, I’m not counting on Myers as a G. We need more IOL options and guys like Filiaga and Delance (currently listed as a T but I find that questionable, despite extra long arms, in terms of starting) can fill that gap and, in doing so free better options at C. Delance will need to have added strength in the weight room to contend though. Tenuta has the mindset/attitude to play guard, but can a 6’8 player make it at G?

Bo Melton will surprise. You’ll see.

1. WR is probably one of our main positions at which we’ll need to guard against injury.

2. Melton backs up or challenges Reed for every Jet concept.

7 WR this year.

Not a beef with you individually, GG, but I get peeved with the "we'll keep 7 WR this year" that seems to pop up every year. For a team that likes to run 2 TE sets more than others, and hasn't kept 7 WR out of camp in the LaF era, 7 WR seems very unlikely.

"Bo Melton will surprise. You’ll see." -- if he makes the 53, I'll be surprised.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Melton makes it. If he is catching balls consistently he’s every bit as much of a threat as Wicks, who has the same question over him. To me it’s one of DuBose/Wicks for the back up X option and then the best, healthy 5 or 6, depending on the system LaFleur wants.

All it takes is for Watson to go out for a bit, then another unforeseen injury at the position..

My thinking is Gutekunst is not going to let injury rob LaFleur of his scheme concepts after years of darkness did just that. I mean, if he can help it, and, he can.

I just noticed Tarvarius Moore was not in Mark’s Safety group.

We’ll see.

dobber, you said the same thing last year, and they kept seven WRs. It doesn't mean they think they have a strong WR group, it just means that they have some borderline guys who fall just on the side of being worth keeping. This year I expect them to keep six, but I don't think seven is out of the question, especially if DuBose and Melton both have strong camps . They have a lot of young WRs who they might not want to risk losing so quickly. They will probably keep four TEs--same as last year, so I don't expect that to be a factor in deciding how many WRs to keep.

I am predicting the weather on Labor Day 2023 to be sunny, 75 degrees, low humidity and mild breeze with the Brewers holding a 10 game division lead.

It is as accurate as predicting the 53 that will be getting ready for bares week. But I also don't expect a lot of roster variations to Mark's first pass. It is as good an analysis for May 2023 I have seen so far in...May.

The interest for me will be the depth chart. I see some rookies moving up...Reed, Brooks, Dubois, and Johnston. Valentine is very interesting too.

Pretty good list. IMO:

Hanson and Newman are terrible, and this is likely the best they are going to get. I would prefer to keep someone else that could still develop. e.g. Jones or Tenetta

Leavitt - I understand, but hope/pray the guy never gets any defensive snaps.

I will really miss Mason Crosby. #11 in all time scoring. Had a chance to move up a few more spots this year, perhaps to 7 or 8.
Thanks for everything.

Hanson and Newman weren't very good last year, especially when they lined up next to each other.

But we didn't draft anybody to replace them. We dress 9 OL and right now, that would be Bakhtiari, Jenkins, Nijman, Runyan, Myers, Tom, Newman, Hanson, and Rhyan/Walker/Jones/Tenuta, none of whom has ever taken a snap in the NFL.

I'm going to assume that the 1265 Brass has a plan, and it probably includes Newman, Rhyan, Hanson, Walker, Jones all improving to one degree or another. We've got six good linemen, so we can withstand one injury. Because of our flexibility, if any of these guys improved enough to play we can adjust to two injuries. But sooner or later, Newman and Hanson are going to be on the field.....probably during the stretch run.

The first thing that struck me was keeping four TE's on the roster. It seems that Deguera could be let go. This is not a hope, just a thought. Also, why not bring in Matt Araiza to offer some competition for punting? The Bills cut him when he was charged with sexual assault. He has now been cleared of those allegations. He is a free agent, and also showed he can really be a weapon as a punter, both in college, and in some exhibition games.

TE plays hybrid FB role too. Highly unlikely to cut the most experienced TE that is also a FB, and is in his 3rd year. This is the year that he most likely will make a leap if he is going to make one. They just spent 2 years developing him, so he would need to look very bad in preseason to get cut.

I hope Araiza gets a second chance in the NFL after the severe charge of sexual assault filed against him appears to be frivolous, reckless, even malicious.
It seems a tragedy that he wasn't treated with the right of an American to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Players have to be extra careful these days at parties and nightclubs to not have their lives largely destroyed by wild accusations given undue weight by irresponsible wokeness.
Along with the moral concerns, it's necessary to consider that the next hookup could be a setup.

I agree with all of this, except I would choose Tyler Goodson over Lew Nichols for the RB3 job. Goodson was electric last preseason.

Also, I will be interested to see what Jonathan Ford can do in year 2. He could really help in the run game, potentially. I would not be surprised if he improves this year.

I would also take the 6'8, 260 lb Austin Allen to be our #4 TE instead of non-factor Tyler Davis. Allen also has some ST experience from Nebraska

The 3rd RB will be the one that is best at protecting the QB and shows decent running ability. It's hard to imagine what Davis has to do to get cut. Maybe this year is the year that Davis has to show something or else, no more developing and waiting.

At least one UDFA will probably make the team. I look at the roster and wonder where that is most likely to happen.

EDGE. Brenton Cox Jr. is my guess. I think he’s met up with so much adversity in his career coming in that the Packers represent a kind of new lease on life opportunity for him.

Personally, I think Cox Jr. will wind up being THE steal of UDFA. One incredibly dynamic talent to add to this EDGE group in GB. He’s 6-4 250 with an 80 3/4” wingspan.

Career stats:
138 tackles, 34.5 TFL, 14.5 sacks, 10 PD, 1 FF, 1 FR, 118 Pressures, 81 QB Hurries

About two months and two weeks to go until training camp.
Not only do I love football, but autumn in general -- while summer is too hot for me as somewhat of an old grouch.
I'm going to try to make the most of the intervening time, though, as was reinforced to me last June on my helicopter ride to emergency aortic dissection surgery.
I read more than usual today, and even put up some artwork on the walls, including Packers stuff.
A few days ago, I got a good walk in the woods with my Dobie, Max, although we still haven't found any gold near Downing Creek in what was once part of the lesser-known Georgia Gold Rush of 1829 (which is, I guess, why the NFL team in Atlanta isn't called the '29ers).
We've seen a couple of panners down there over the past few years since we moved into the area, and there's a couple of subdivision streets near the creek called Gold Mill Ridge and Gold Bridge Crossing. (We live in a humbler setting, and have to drive to the trails along and around the creek with its surrounding forest and Lake Allatoona).
As far as health, I seem to be doing well as of now, and thanks much to CHTV staff and fans for good support and prayers along the way -- plus any in the future.

Caleb Jones plays left tackle. They keep him. Tom could win the starting job a C.

TOM should play LT
Trade Bahk. He's a BandAid now.
Save money and see who develops.

I know it's the premise of being way too early, but holy shit, we haven't even seen the rookies practice next to or scrimmage with experienced NFL players and we're already deciding if they make the roster or not?

That's freakin' fantastic. It's a fun exercise for those who take it in the spirit in which it's intended- way too early- but there's a number of people who actually take their own assessment of the final roster at this time of year way too seriously.

It's pretty great.

Realistically, there's only a handful of roster spots in play. Gute always keeps his draft picks on the team for at least 2 years (with the possible exception of 7th round picks) even if they're being outplayed by an undrafted free agent. So after the established veterans and the draftees, other guys don't have much chance of making the active roster. But the practice squad can still be a good landing spot for talent, and they can end up playing as much or more as fringe players on the active roster.

No veteran third QB available on game day emergency roster?

I am probably not correct on this, but I thought the NFL now allows the 3rd QB to reside on PS but still be able to dress without taking a 53 man roster spot.

That’s exactly what I’m referring too, pretty hard to have an emergency veteran backup ready when he’s not even on the roster!

Seriously, no Caleb Jones? Secondly, Bo Melton should be competing with Jayden Reed and Samori Tour for the slot receiver spot. Or, with Melton's 4.3 speed a backup for Christian Watson. They train together in the off season. I don't see all three of the Packer's rookie WR's making the team. But, it is as you say way too early.

4.3 speed is serious! How do you keep that off the field? Caleb Jones' size, plus another O lineman that tall (I forget his name) I'd love to see developed at least for depth.
