Trying to Grapple With the Packers' Sudden Mediocrity

What exactly do the Packers do well at the moment?

We have reached the very first point in the Matt LaFleur era where the Packers are facing any kind of major ongoing adversity.

For the most part, things have gone pretty smoothly for LaFleur's Packers. Three consecutive seasons with 13 wins, a couple deep playoff runs, plenty of success (all things considered).

However, there have also been three extremely ugly playoff exits, and most of the team's defeats in the regular season in that time have been pretty bad as well.

I'm currently writing this on Sunday evening, to be posted on a Monday afternoon. It's still relatively soon after the Packers' embarrassing home loss to the New York Jets; I haven't had a chance to sleep on it yet and don't really know how I expect to feel by the time all of you good folks of Cheesehead TV are reading this on Monday.

After tough losses, I try to stay as measured as possible. Usually I have a few takes that I revise once I've had a chance to reflect some more, but for the most part I do a good job of separating my feelings from the logic of the situation.

I gotta say, right now it's harder than usual to do that. Because I feel like two things are simultaneously true:

1) This team should be significantly better than it is.

2) We should have seen this coming.

The Packers have, on paper, a ton of talent, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. But over the last year, two years, three years, there have been signs that the Packers could be headed toward a precipitous drop-off. We may well have reached that point.

Here are a few of my postgame thoughts and concerns.

On Matt LaFleur

The hot take: LaFleur was absolutely the right coach to revitalize Aaron Rodgers and bring some spark back into the Packers' offense. He was young, a fresh face, and had a modern offense, and was able to form early connections with the players. But in this moment, I'm not entirely sure he's the coach to navigate this team through extended adversity.

LaFleur seems to not have any answers at the podium after these difficult loses. There's only so many times you can say "we/I have to be better" or "we have to find more ways to get Aaron Jones the football" before it starts to wear thin. Six weeks into the season, the Packers have yet to play more than a good two quarters of football in the same game, and in most games they've been lucky to get that much. Jones is being criminally underutilized, and the Packers appear generally lifeless.

One of the unfortunate hallmarks of LaFleur's Packers has been that when times get tough, the Packers wilt. In almost no circumstances have the Packers met major adversity within a game and fought through to win. The Packers have had some incredibly talented and successful teams these last few years, but they've also been front runners, which has come back to haunt them when they played teams in the playoffs that were, if not equally talented, more resilient.

Watching the way the New York Jets responded to Robert Saleh today was a reminder of the ways in which teams can take on the personality of their head coach. The Jets were flying to the football and playing with a reckless abandon you've rarely, if ever, seen out of the Green Bay Packers over the last decade-plus.

I think LaFleur is a good football coach, and he was the right hire for the Green Bay Packers at that time.

Now, before I proceed, I must stipulate once again that this could very well be emotional post-loss Tim talking and not cool-headed, rational Tim, so I reserve the right to revisit and revise this opinion after one or two sleeps on it, BUT...

I must wonder whether the Packers have already surpassed the point where LaFleur's voice and leadership style is what the roster needs.

Note, I am not at all advocating for the Packers to fire LaFleur; that would be absolutely absurd. The man has never lost back-to-back regular season games before now.

But there is a part of me that wonders if LaFleur is capable of bringing the Packers out of this mid-October murk and back toward something resembling respectability. Because as mentioned previously, the Packers haven't exactly done a great job of navigating adversity in his time.

It's getting old watching LaFleur's buddies thoroughly embarrass him, and other teams remark on the Packers being weak-willed and soft. It's getting old watching this team collapse like a house of cards any time they turn the ball over, or any time they just might not feel like playing (see: trips to London and California).

So yeah, for the first time, I do have some seeds of doubt about Matt LaFleur.

On Joe Barry

The hot take: Regardless of what happens on offense, the Packers can't win with Joe Barry.

Look, my feelings on Joe Barry have been pretty straightforward. I didn't like the hire, but took a "let's wait and see what happens" approach before making any proclamations. I was very hard on him throughout the first portion of the 2021 season, but eventually came around somewhat by the time December had rolled around.

But it's grown clear to me that Barry's presence will be a hamper on this team. There were at least some adjustments made to the game plan today that allowed the defense to have one of its best performances of the year in the first half. But in general, the Packers are still never dictating to the offense; they're playing a very soft, reactive style of defense and not putting many of their players, even some of their best players, in position to succeed.

Joe Barry has been a defensive coordinator twice previously and lasted two years in each stop. He'd never coordinated an average defense, let alone a good one. He cannot be trusted to make mid-game (or even many mid-season) adjustments, and it's hard to trust he understands how to most effectively use his personnel.

The Packers have insane amounts of talent and investment on this defense, but the quality of ingredients doesn't matter if the chef sucks.

On Aaron Rodgers

The hot take: As I wrote for this website in January, the Packers should have traded Aaron Rodgers for the once-in-a-generation haul of picks, players and cash they could have gotten in return.

Right now, the Packers are paying the richest contract in NFL history, north of $50 million per year, for Aaron Rodgers to be an average quarterback and for the offense to be pitiful. If the team tries to move on, or if Rodgers retires, the dead cap space would absolutely obliterate this team. Basically, unless Rodgers turns it around and starts playing top-flight QB football once again, the Packers are completely screwed.

Anything I write here will just be re-stating what I wrote in January. Rodgers will be 39 in December. The Packers will never had a better chance than they had in 2020 and 2021 to win a championship. They failed, due in no small part to Rodgers failing to show up in the big moments.

The team had a choice to either walk it back and go as "all in" as they could by shelling out cash to Rodgers, despite knowing Rodgers had openly flirted with retirement and might not see out another deal, OR to bite the bullet, trade Rodgers and gather a king's ransom of draft picks and/or players and cap space.

Perhaps the worst scenario that could have unfolded was for the Packers to invest in Rodgers and mortgage the future only to bad or, even worse, average (because at least if you're bad you get good draft capital).

Right now, the Packers certainly are not a good football team. Rodgers has plenty of blame for that, but the issues go far beyond him. If the rest of the season goes like the first six weeks, the Packers will be very fortunate to make the playoffs. The team will have missed out its chance on a generational haul only to either miss the playoffs entirely or to suffer yet another underwhelming exit.

By my estimation, Jordan Love is likely not the long-term answer at the quarterback position. But it's better to have a bad team with a young player making little money and a chance to rebuild with assets than it is to have a bad or average team with a QB in his twilight years with a complete stranglehold on your team's finances. At the very least, the Packers would have been able to use those draft assets to maneuver the draft and find a different QB they believe in. The possibilities were endless; all it took was having the guts to move on a year or two earlier than will likely end up happening anyway.

At the moment, not only has the contract for Rodgers not been worth it, but it's also looking like it could end up being absolutely disastrous for the team. Even if Rodgers retires, the Packers are sunk financially with no extra picks to fall back on.

This was, as I noted at the time, a decision that could reverberate through the franchise for years, even decades. The Packers made the opposite choice of what I would have made at the time. While the jury is still out on whether it was the right choice, the early returns are certainly awful.

On the rest of the season

I truly have no idea what to expect out of this team the rest of the season. While I'd love to believe that this team can find its way out of early struggles as it has in plenty of other past years, my gut is telling me this is more like a 2018 situation, in which we kept waiting for the team to get it together only to watch everything unbelievably fall apart.

You can even forget the ideas of the team not applying the proper schemes or the team playing with a lack of heart (both of which are also apt observations); one of the most concerning trends of this season is that so many players who are supposed to be good simply are not. All of the following are players who for one reason or another simply are not as good as they were last year or were supposed to be this year:

  • Aaron Rodgers
  • AJ Dillon
  • Elgton Jenkins
  • Josh Myers
  • Adrian Amos
  • Darnell Savage
  • De'Vondre Campbell
  • Eric Stokes
  • Rasul Douglas

Then you've got guys like Christian Watson or Sammy Watkins who have been disappointments due to injury, guys like Quay Walker who are up and down, a guy like David Bakhtiari who is still fighting his way back...

Who are the players you can hang your hat on right now? There are nowhere near as many as usual. It's basically Rashan Gary and Kenny Clark on defense, wtih Jaire Alexander a little ways behind them. On offense... Aaron Jones, on the rare occasions on which he's actually given the ball. Allen Lazard is solid for what he's asked to do but simply is not meant to be a team's primary target. Randall Cobb is a great role player even at his age but shouldn't have to carry so much of the passing game's burden. Robert Tonyan hasn't found his pre-injury form, though today was the best game he's had since tearing his ACL.

There's a lot of football to go, and I'm trying my best to stay positive and hope that this team can get it turned around.

But the fact is we've completed six weeks of the regular season and it's very difficult to determine much of anything this team does well.

Send Wrs in motion. I don't remember Adams going in motion much. I get the play action. But it was overused against the jets.

Gute is the best overpayer in The NFL and Rodgers is the most overpaid player of all time.

Our drug addled QB and his grinch hair styles are stupid looking.

Gute turned a pile of potential draft capital into a pile of grinch feces.

I agree that Rodgers is significantly underperforming his contract, but if memory serves correctly, it was Murphy that took credit for signing Rodgers to that huge contract. Not sure Gute had much to do with that decision.

Exactly Guam. Murphy is the first President of the Packers in my recollection who runs the team by committee with him as the Chairman in all major decisions. Heck, he probably pokes his nose into little decisions too.

Murphy is a micromanager. His dysfunctional triumvirate invites constant second guessing and meddling between ML, Gute and Ball who can mess in each other's sandbox...all they need do is complain to Football Chairman Murphy.

This is the 4th year of Murphy's goofy Management by Committee. The team is now in cap hell with an old QB showing decline with some apathy sinking in, a glorified OC as HC, a VP of Finance who has more power than the GM, and a GM who's title should be Director of the Draft.

What should be done is give the 67 year old Murphy his gold watch and bring in a strong leader as President of the Packers who will let his managers do the actual jobs they were hired for.

It's time for the Packers faithful to realize this is a .500 team at best and stick a fork in it for this year.

What we're seeing is a (hopefully) short-term fall off until fortunes turn around.

I heard one of the commentators say something is really off inside the Packers organization as the entire team seems to be in a malaise. Malaise was a word tossed around frequently in the 70's and 80's. The problems then seemed insurmountable and continued year after year. On one show the host said Robert Salah and Mike LaFleur basically pulled the same plan out of the hat the 49'ers used a couple of years ago to beat Green Bay. Apparently Matt LF didn't realize it.

Like it or not, Gute and MLF have to take responsibility for this. When Rodgers first started whining about a contract extension years ago, I said he should have been traded him to then Oakland for David Carr. Carr was in Gruden's doghouse and Rodgers began his quest to run the team. Instead they extended Rodgers and now have extended him again for potential catastrophic financial consequences. "All in" has resulted in "all out".

The fans have to grow up a bit too. Never have the Packers had the amount of success the team has had since Ron Wolf hired Mike Holmgren. We've become used to winning most of the time. The NFL cycles builds the weak to replace the winners. The Packers will be in a down cycle now for awhile. The whole program of paying for top talent is now showing it's negative side. We all have to adjust and remain fans, just like the fans did in the 50's after Lambeau's early success and the 70's and 80's. But it will be tough to watch them lose to teams they would have beaten not all that long ago.

Not many rationale fans on this site LL….the answer isn’t to fire everybody after 3 very successful seasons. I’m more about how Pittsburgh runs their franchise. Consistency is important for any business. IMO, If we fired Mlf there would be other teams lining up to hire him. He’s only the winningest coach in the history of the sport for the first 3 seasons.

Nonsense. This group would tear Tomlin to shreds at 2-4. We have a coach that has won 13 games three years in a row and there are those who say it's because of a HOF QB. Then the same people dump on said HOF QB.

Look, I get it. The Packers are going through a bad stretch. Maybe it's Lafleur, maybe it's Rodgers. maybe it's Barry. Or maybe, just maybe, there is a chance they turn it around. If they do, I suspect the doubters won't make it known that they were wrong.

I can assure you (not you personally barutanseijin) , If the Packers finish with a losing record and miss the playoffs, I will admit that I was wrong. If the reverse happens will the folks in here screaming at the top of there lungs to blow this team up do the same?

Please.

This year's Rams are proving that last year was fluke. This Packers team just isn't working and won't for the foreseeable future. They might beat the Commanders this week but they are on track for 9-8 or 8-9.
Look at their upcoming schedule and tell me they will win 9 of the next 10 or 11 to reach the playoffs.

Harry, you are right. I can see 4 wins more for the season. Commanders, 2×Lions and Bears. If they win vs Commanders...

That will be 7-10. And that is possibly the best outcome we can expect.

Harry I agree with most your post except for the part about Gutekunst and MLF deciding to extend Rodgers. That part of the current situation is on Murphy. He wanted to keep Rodgers regardless of Gute trying to rebuild and transition the team to more of a running game. I'm not even sure that the Barry and Bisaccia hires were made by MLF. I would not be surprised to learn that Murphy was involved in those decisions as well. Thanks, Since '61

The amount of success since Ron Wolf is two Super Bowls in 30 years. Four championship game losses, and choked away two number one seeds, and several home playoff losses. Not to mention losing a SB as a 14 point favorite.
Rodgers is always saying “ the standard around here “ Lombardi said there is no second place..
But forget about the 90s and even up to the last SB.. the last 11-12 years are arguably the most disappointing in franchise history. At least in the 80s you didn’t expect much because the talent wasn’t there. Since 2010 this team has blown some unbelievable games and home field advantage.
Now that the QB isn’t playing at a superhuman level the wheels appear to be falling off.
Too many number 1s on defense and too much $$ being paid on offense for this level of mediocrity… McCarthy, Pettine, Drayton all gone so now why should ML, Barry or Guteknust be spared.

The real question is how many more coaches will be axed before Rodgers is finally held accountable? Why does he keep getting rewarded and enabled for falling apart at the worst possible times while coaches lose their jobs? At some point, just having the golden arm isnt enough. You have to be a decent person with some leadership qualities and humility too. As they said repeatedly on sunday while talking about the jets resurgence, culture comes first. And Rodgers 100% cultivates a toxic environment for everyone and it shows cuz this team has taken on his apathetic and lifeless persona as their own. Been that way for years too but the super bowl winning coach with a street named after him in Green Bay who also taught said qb everything he knows ultimately fell on his sword. And now the coach with the winningest record ever to start a career is taking the blame. Its not ok. I feel like Jesse Pinkman at this point. "He cant keep getting away with this!"

It should have been seen coming, perhaps it was, but denial is a hard habit to break.

When and while the team had many a veteran of reliable play on both sides of the ball, MLF looked awesome, but his postseason fails told a truth. That truth is now obvious. He has reached his ceiling and his floor is now exposed and falling.

Joe Barry was Joe Barry before the FO hired him, and he's Joe Barry now, and will be Joe Barry afterwards.

I sided with keeping Rodgers because I have no faith in Love to be anything more than a .500 QB at best. Moving on from Rodgers before the deadline is the only way this team possibly has a chance to win something. It won't save the season, or the salary cap issues that are coming, but it can certainly ease the pain of both going forward.

As to the question, What exactly do the Packers do well at the moment?

If my eyes are open, not much at all.

If my eyes are closed, I don't watch things with my eyes closed, because I don't do fantasy. Reference the last part of my first sentence.

I pretty much agree with what your seeing.

What my eyes are seeing is a glaring problem with the O-line.

Like it or not Aaron Rodgers hold the ball and needs excellent protection to play the way his instincts tell him too. I do not believe that will ever change. he also tends to get rattled if pressured too often. better protection also gives the other players more a chance to get open.

We have seen stretches when the O-line has blocked well enough in the run game, but its normally against less O-lines. Perhaps it can be even better with improved play.

If it can be, fix the O-line and the offensive play will improve. If the offense controls the time of possession then the Defense will likely be fresher and play better as well.

Now that said, there are many other area's that improvement is needed. but from what I see, that would help things greatly. I think this could be a play-off team if they can right the ship. That does not mean a SB Contender, but possibly a wild card..... Maybe...

I agree...just read a good article about Rodgers is "quietly quitting" and that MLF has not a clue and is obviously not the answer in Green Bay...Joe Barry?? pfffft...never was a good choice...when I see they coaches with the Giants and Jets and how they show emotion and fire and then I look at MLF on the sidelines, (who once in awhile will flap his arms like some kind of subpar cheerleader) Im pretty sure he isn't the guy to lead this team anymore....Rodgers for sure knows it, the team has no fire, he knows theres no help coming and that the coach has flatlined..he should be traded and I would like to see Jones traded because this coaching staff is more in love with "quadzilla" than the much more dynamic player, Jones...he would be dynamic with another team with a good head coach and Packers could get a nice return for the trade...theyll win some more games for sure, but this team isn't going anywhere with this coaching staff...we didn't even get a "relax" from Rodgers....he knows...all the people who blame everything on Rodgers, even make fun of his hair, are dumb football fans...

I don’t know about all of that…ALL year we’ve ALL seen overthrows, underthrows, off target throws and pre madonna on field antics . LaFluer made a living with quick passing game, solid run game, creative play calling and Rodgers has somehow shut that shit down. There are at least 2 -3 wrs capable of running quick slants…RBs standing 7 yards in front of him open and waiting for the ball and he chooses to go deeper to a covered guy. The ball is not coming out quick. Granted , there are some OL issues…particularly at center and guard. Amari Rodgers is more than capable of catching a ball or running a reverse.
On coaching….I don’t think LaFluer has a handle on Rodgers, this current scheme isn’t anything like the last 3 yrs. we went black to long developed plays and running out of shotgun waiting for rookies to get open…that’s not winning football. Also, with his shitty facial expressions he’s setting a shit example for the rookie WRs instead of assisting in their development.

Trading him isnt an option. They would have to cut their entire team to afford it and would spend the next decade getting the cap right. The only way out of this contract early is to negotiate a buyout, assuming he would go along with it which he probly wont. Just bench him now and play Love.

There are eleven games to play. Plenty of time for a turnaround. At this point, there are ten teams with winning records. Four of them are in the NFC. Seven teams from each conference go to the playoffs. That is what matters. The Manning led Giants won two SB's after posting regular season records of 9-7 and 10-6. The last time the Packers won, they had a record of 10-6. The formula has worked repeatedly: make the playoffs, get hot, win an SB. Will this happen? Likely not. But if you want hope, here it is. And without hope, what's the point of living?

Hey Ricky agreed to your point but if you see all those years both manning and Gb had great offensive weapons unfortunately we lack them. Even in 2020 Bucs didnt look like a playoff team early or middle of the season but suddenly turned it around again they too have great weapons at that time. Currently we dont have any great weapons to help 12 when he isn't playing that good. Previous years either davante or Jordy used to come to his aid currently only have one experienced receiver in the team i.e, Lazard and developing good rookie Doubs. I think it's a lot to expect from this team compared to those years.

Packers1985 do you know what is the main difference between 2020 Bucs and todays Packers? Their Head Coach and their QB. And those 2 spots are the most important one, do they? MLF is not grown man yet, while Bruce Arian would long time ago close himself and Diva in the locker room, until DIva will admit he will follow the teams order. And Diva would play in preseason with fire under the a*s.

That is the difference, very important one, not the WR, not the OL players, not any of the coaching staff. Or D, or ST. In the real HC systems there is no place for anybody who is exception. When you have a job, there is no pals you should spare from criticism if they need to get one, or to be fired if they are not fulfill their obligation, or do not have enough knowledge or capabilities for the role they are paid.

The difference is clear as a day Tom Brady inherited a top defense and an offense which is being held up by James Winston. Even without Tom Brady recruits the offense were already full with top end receivers not one but two in the name of Goodwin and Evans.

But again in terms of leadership Our 12 is no where near in compared to TB 12 but their team is always ahead of us in terms of talent on both sides of the ball so not a right comparison. Agreed to the fact Lafluer being a young coach doesn't help much like Bruce Arians.

I share your perspective, Ricky. While I cannot deny the Jets loss was deflating and our team looked putrid on so many levels, we have 11 freaking games to go! I'm tired of all the overreactions in the sports world and especially here at CHTV. Fire LaFleur! Fire Gutekunst! Fire Barry! Rodgers is washed up! How soon we forget that most of us thought Adams and Gary were busts early in their careers and that Rodgers was in serious decline before he won back to back MVPs. Give the team a chance to correct its many problems. Who knows what the NFL landscape will look like when the playoffs roll around. Like you said, the primary goal is to get into the playoffs, and if that happens, hope you get hot. in a weird way, I'd rather have us slip in as a lower seed and have the team play loose, than have all the weight of being a top seed and playing tight. Of course the possibility also exists that the Packers will continue their free fall and even end up with a losing record. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Hopefully ur right and this team turns around real quick and face this adversity with some real intent to reach SB. It all starts with the coaching staff and then the leaders GB12 on offense and clark gary ja and cambell on defense.

They told that the hope dies last. If you are expecting turnaround for this team, you need to have people who will do it. And this is the discussion started with the article. Try some Murphy Law just to open an eyes - like "Left to themselves, all things goes from bad to worse." Or "If you think everything is OK, you are surely overlooked something!" "If anything can go wrong, it will!" etc.

As it looks now Packers do not have staff to produce turnaround, Lets say, we who thinks that season is more or less is over all hope how we are wrong. But signs you can not denied.

1. The Packers may be the best team in the past five or even six years to be able to keep their opponents in the game. They blow no one away.
2. The Packers have the ability to pick players in the draft with a long history of injuries and wonder why these guys are always hurt. Watson,
Watkins, Amos, Cobb, Belaga, Jenkins, etc.
3. The packers are capable of having three different defensive coaches who all use the same packer defensive playbook, changing nothing.
They were all told before hire, no 4 3 defense here, we dont want to pay for defensive ends, you make it happen with linebackers who are cheaper. Otherwise your hired.
4. The Packers are the only team to be favored at home in playoff games and look like they are the visiting team without a clue.

I agree. The OLB's we have instead of true DE's cannot set the edge. Other teams have discovered this and are running the ball around the ends. 179 yards for the Jets.

Amos, Bulaga and Jenkins had a bad injury history at drafting? Amos had been pretty stalwart for us health wise, Jenkins had an ACL, but otherwise has been healthy. Bulaga was great for a decade till his knees wore down and we let him move on. Cobb was only injury prone after he signed his second contract and fell on the in-game microphone. Bringing him back was a Rodgers demand as opposed to a team trait. Watkins was cheap and had upside for value if he stayed healthy and that it was why he was cheap.

It's almost too much to wrap your arms around at once: Rodgers has a financial stranglehold on the organization, you passed on the chance to give Love a full evaluation, there are a litany of questions about the coaching staff, and Gute's plan to rebuild the WR corps has blown up in his face. On offense, we have almost become the Green Bay Bears with subpar OL play, and little in the way of play-making receivers or schemes to get them open.

I'm not giving up on the season yet, but the next two games should be very telling about how this team responds to adversity: one against a bad team, and one against a very good one. If they flop on both on both occasions....I don't know what the organization can do to wiggle out of this situation they put themselves into. Happy to hand this depressing thought to others--maybe they have some creative (but realistic) solutions.

When so many players are underperforming, it seems time to scrutinize the coaches.
***
Why do we have to pay Aaron Rodgers if he retires?
Is there any way to get out of his contract?
***
Let's start by firing anyone in management who decided to bring back arrogant Rodgers.
How can we entrust our team management to anyone who wanted to bring back a guy who basically held out the past two seasons, and seems to interfere so rudely in both the job of general manager and head coach.
As an example, when Rodgers publicly announces, in effect, that the starters are going to play in the meaningless game at the end of the last regular season against the Lions -- apparently before the head coach has made that decision -- then it's a huge problem at the core of the organization. (By the way, we lost Bakh and MVS to injury in that game so that both we're unavailable in the playoffs against the 49ers.)
***
Where is the dignity of a general manager or head coach who allows any player to interfere in their jobs -- or the dignity of any executive who pressured them to do so?
We need to find out who made the call on re-signing Rodgers, and even who went along with it. It seems all of them should be fired, or at least the main culprit.
How can we be confident that this current management will be able to ever lead the Packers to success when they've failed in the fundamental duty to assert their authority against an arrogant and intrusive quarterback?
The groveling of management to Rodgers has undermined the entire team by creating a basic dysfunction in the proper running of the team.
The hard reality is that until this fundamental flaw has been remedied, the Packers just can't be winners.
***
Too strong? Please, tell me why.

Swisch we've known for a long time that Murphy made the call to extend Rodgers. He publicly announced "We're not idiots."

The Executive Board is not going to make a move on Murphy. Murphy can retire anytime he chooses. Gute is part of the succession plan to take over whenever Murphy does retire and maybe Ball gets the GM job. The beat goes on. MLF is expendable. If the team continues to collapse he and his coaching staff are gone and the Packers are starting over.

As I've posted below in this thread and on another thread earlier today Murphy is attempting to keep the Packers relevant under his watch. Even losing with Rodgers keeps the Packers relevant in the NFL world including the media. Fact is Rodgers is a symptom, not the problem. Just like wining the SB is not the goal, although it is the stated goal. The goal is relevance. Relevance keeps the team on national TV. Relevance keeps the stadium sold out. Relevance keeps people visiting the Titletown District even in the post-season, Relevance keeps FAs interested in coming to play in Green Bay. Most importantly relevance keeps management employed. When Rodgers goes it's very likely relevance goes with him. I also believe that Murphy retires when Rodgers does or shortly thereafter and he claim that he kept the packers relevant during his tenure as team President.

The smart move was to trade Rodgers after 2 consecutive MVP season and get the picks. Now we're in salary cap hell with no opportunity to move on Rodgers and a coaching staff that doesn't have solutions for the on field failures.

If this season goes bad, below .500 finish, the smart move will be to chuck MLF and his staff and hopefully Rodgers retires. But it's too early in the season for that. Let's see if the team can turn this season around before we go into full rebuild mode. Thanks, Since '61

Thanks much, Since'61, for your fascinating post.
I'm not up on the inner workings of the Packers organization, but the situation you describe is utterly depressing: Mark Murphy is making decisions against the Packers being a winning team in order to keep the Packers as a relevant team (putting the making of money over the making of championships) -- and Murphy has no one able or willing to check his power.
All of this seems to mean the Packers are doomed for a long time to come -- depending on how long it takes to recover from the damage done by Murphy and Aaron Rodgers.
***
If all of this means that Gute and LaFleur are not responsible for bringing back Rodgers, it seems they are still guilty of being accomplices.
After three seasons of 13 wins, both of these guys were in a position to call BS on Murphy with confidence they would be highly employable by another NFL team.
Instead, apparently, neither had the integrity to stand up to Murphy or Rodgers, which is a self-inflicted humiliation for both of them.
I do realize this would be a tough position for the both of them as caught in the middle, but it's not as though either was at risk for going on welfare.
It seems both Gute and LaFleur wimped out.
***
So, under this scenario, Murphy is not an idiot, but a traitor to fans who are silly enough to want the Packers to win Super Bowls.
Perhaps there's a second Murphy's Law: Money will likely win out over championships.

Swisch - Remember that MLF did lobby hard for the Packers to extend Rodgers. Now in fairness to MLF his job is to win football games and Rodgers gives the Packers the best chance to win. Because of that I would not expect MLF to stand up to Murphy not to mention that Murphy hired him as the Packers HC.

We don't know what Gute's stance was on extending Rodgers but his draft choices since he became GM certainly appear to be building a team to transitioning from the Rodgers era. The other point that we don't know for sure is if the Packers were approached by other teams about trading for Rodgers or if they made the type of offer for Rodgers that the Packers would accept. We also don't know if Gute reached out to any other teams to see if there was any interest in acquiring Rodgers.

As for Murphy if the Packers win another SB with Rodgers the money spent for Rodgers is well worth it. If the Packers don't win he took a shot but his coaches didn't get the job done or Rodgers declined etc. In the end Murphy retires either way.

The flip side is that Murphy, Gutekunst and MLF decided to go all in for the next 2 seasons and they needed to retain Rodgers to go all in and Murphy felt $150 million to go all in with Rodgers is worth the calculated risk. In this scenario MLF has the most to lose. Murphy retires, Gute becomes team President and MLF takes the hit for not winning an SB unless he keeps the Packers close by making the playoffs.

Whatever the motives are or whatever the plan is the wheels have fallen off for the last 2 games. If I was MLF I would reorganize the OL by moving Jenkins back to LG, Runyon to RG and Nijman to RT. I would also simplify the offense for our receivers at least and maybe for Jones and Dillon as well. Get the ball in Jones hands and go with the short passing game. On defense get aggressive and get after the QB and let our DBs play man coverage. Above all get the team ready to play for a full 60 minutes. Playing half a game is not winning football. Let's see what happens this week. Thanks, Since '61

I did not look at any articles after the loss until today. My thought was that all I would read would be complaints and after looking at this article and others, that is true. Plus, yesterday, I did not know what to say in any comments other than to complain as well and I really did not and still do not know really what the problem is. You can't say the offense stinks, or the defense stinks or special teams stink. They all played pretty bad and I am still trying to figure out 'what is the problem?'.

I think the team knows from the player chatter in the locker room. There is more to this than just 'they are not playing well right now'. I believe you have to look at the coaching. The planning for each game is not going well and as I have mentioned a lot in the past, in game adjustments just do not happen and we continue to fail. The players know this and I think they just kind of give up knowing the outcome of the game.

Tim, you mentioned that Lafleur is the problem but hesitate to say what must be done with him. You sound like he should be let go but then when it comes right down to it, you don't make that call. As to Barry, I thought he coached pretty well last year but now they have added some good players and they are not playing well at all. I would imagine that when Barry was hired, based on his DC history with two other teams, a high percentage of us wondered why this guy was hired? But we had faith in LeFleur that he knew what he was doing.

The team lacks that killer instinct and they do play soft. I think the team should make some coaching changes. To what extent, I can't tell you but some change needs to occur.

This should be interesting this week and depending on the results of the next game, the following week as well.

I think we are all pretty disappointed right now and none of us can agree in total as to what should be done to improve things.

I have this feeling that these players, especially the guys who have been around, know that MLF has no answers, he isn't a fire up kind of guy, he looks lost on the sidelines and his players look lackadaisical..nothing will change until this coaching staff is gone...a few rough years ahead as I'm sure Rodgers won't be sticking around much longer and why would Jones want to stay somewhere where he isn't even used...

One has to question MLF’s judgement and leadership: Exhibit 1- His failure to address the terrible performance of STs over the past three years; Exhibit2- The hire of Joe Barry; Exhibit 3- Promoting Steno a highly successful oline coach to OC; Exhibit4- inability to motivate the team and Exhibit 5 - Allowing ARod to dictate the offensive scheme. MLF reminds me of a leader who needs to be liked. Strong leaders often have to make decisions for the good of the organization, that are going to piss some individuals off

I don't agree with anything in this Article. You want to blow up everything. And if I was a player, I'd get the Hell out of GB. Resulting in the Pack will never be back. Money isn't going to buy are way out of this. So let me start.
#1.LeFluer- He's young. And his staff had departures. Finally He's trying to break the ST curse that has been there since 2010.
#2. Barry- Seriously Barry needed new blood. ILB, DL. and really is Savage the answer at FS? Blame his coaches! Don't Blame the Game plan!
#3. Trading Rodgers. - For What?= 2 #1s and going back to where The Pack won't be back. I guarantee one would have been used to replace Love.( And they would be late in the draft!) The Veterans wouldn't come here if it wasn't for Rodgers. So forget spending money unless you want to extend the career of a used up player. You wanted to play TT.
#4 on the rest of the season. - Rodger's isn't a coach. He's a QB who needs time. The OL has been so screwed up since the start of the season. It's not going to change; if the coaches keep experimenting, and keep following the same old pattern. Their Screwed!
Rodger's has never been pressured, or knock to the ground so much, since he broke his collar bone. You may hate his ego and life style. But he's still the best chance we have to get to the super-bowl. The call in GB has always been. Get the stars some help. When will the calvary arrive??

What do the Packers do well right now? Well they actually kick FGs, PATs and Punts well when they aren't blocked.

Beyond that no offense can do anything well when the OL is a Hot Mess which is the current status of the Packers OL. The team can't run or pass well when the OL doesn't block effectively. The OL failures are on the offensive coaching staff. The OL left to right should be: Bak, Jenkins, Myers, Runyon, Nijman. That puts our best 5 on the field and at the positions they can be most effective. Why we're keeping Jenkins at RT and Hanson at RG I have no idea but it's not working and it's stupid to continue.

On defense we're playing far too soft and the alleged improved DL has not materialized. Campbell has taken a step back from last season, Walker is all over the place and takes himself out of plays or he can't get off his blocks. Stokes looks like he has regressed from his rookie season and Savage remains inconsistent. 7 first round picks on defense and these are the results we are getting? Except for Clark, Gary and Alexander I am beginning to be concerned about the quality of our other first round picks. They again Barry is our DC so maybe that explains it.

As I posted on another thread earlier today, Murphy's efforts to keep the Packers relevant is diametrically opposed to building a team that can win now or in the short term future. Hiring an HC after just one meeting is a reckless and often a mistaken approach to hiring someone for any position. But he saw an up and coming coach with alleged fresh ideas for the offense but obviously no clue about defense and STs. Then Murphy compounded the problem by extending an aging QB. I am as big a Rodgers supporter as anyone here at CHTV but even I advocated trading him for picks because Rodgers time has passed and our team needs an infusion of young talent at numerous positions. It also would have given MLF a chance to recreate his offense around Love or possibly another QB.

However trading Rodgers probably means playing through at a few sub .500 seasons and Murphy who will likely retire in the next 2-3 seasons does not want to go out with the Packers in full rebuild mode. He wants to keep the Packers relevant for the remainder of his term as Packer President. I suspect that he will retire with Rodgers or shortly thereafter.

I wouldn't want to give up on MLF yet but quite frankly what this team need is a Mike Holmgren like HC assuming that there is any one like him out there. Holmgren's teams never looked as disinterested as this Packer team has looked over their last 6 quarters of football. If MLF cannot turn this team around and the season goes bad, i.e., below .500 I would chuck the entire coaching staff and move on otherwise the team will get the message that management is OK with continuing to lose. As for Rodgers I hope that he decides to retire before he is seriously injured. It's only a matter of time if the OL continues to play as poorly as they have the last few games. Thanks, Since '61

The Super Bowl window is as slammed shut as the windows on a February day in Green Bay. This was entirely predictable and expected. Murphy has announced his retirement in 2024. QB1 is fighting Father Time and the betting odds are on Dad. The man upon whom the franchise relied is neither as mobile nor as accurate as he was ten years ago and the fire in his belly to do superhuman tricks appears to have gone out. The HC or QB1 seems to not understand the team built by the GM who ignored the WR position for years (actually, the organization has historically ignored WR despite the NFL trend to WR passing focus). The MLF offense was supposed to be a RB TE focused offense but Lewis is elderly and Tongan coming off an ACL. MLF has been outcoached at every criticaljuncture…he does appear lost. Good TEs we’re available in free agency but of course the team had no financial ability to go after one or a WR because of the decision to resign #12 who would never have had greater value than after the first or second MVP particularly knowing that the WR reserves were low with or without Adams. There was an expected regression on defense. Douglas and Campbell were practice squad or street free agents who had unexpectedly good years. (Douglas pick in Arizona was a thing of beauty from the stands). Add in a subpar DC hire and… well regression. Special teams has been a disaster for years and can’t be turned around immediately although it has played better. I’d argue that the ST coach may be a good interim HC. The O Line is a mess. But given two starters coming off of ACLs that was to be expected especially given HC reluctance to try out a new alignment to replace a failed line.

Looking at the schedule, playing as they are now wins are going to be hard to come by the Commanders, the Bears and maybe a split with the lions. As the losses to the cream of the crop pile up as I e pest, the fire in the team will further dim and the schisms will expand.

The packers are in cap hell. Regardless of when QB 1 steps away the team has dead money up the wazoo. There will be no trades to the rescue or practice squad saviors. They will draft next year in the teens or better. Love is probably not the answer. However, it is time to rip the bandage off and begin the tear down rebuild. Trade QB1 for whatever you can get. This will require paying most of his salary but that’s gonna happen regardless. Trade Jones. He has a 10 or 20 mil cap hit next year. That’s a lot for 5-6 touches a year. He could bring a first or second rounder. Go with any man and get what you can for Bahk. A contender will give a third or so. Trim payroll Now to accelerate the rebuild. Give the DC his walking papers. Mike Zimmer may do wonders as an interim DC. Reduce cap disaster, reload picks, change leadership. The rebound will be quicker that way and the pain less prolonged.

and there's this ..very .telling...""I'm not attacking anything," Rodgers said. "I just think that based on how we've played the last two weeks, I think it's going to be in our best interests to simplify things for everybody -- for the line, for the backs, for the receivers, especially with [Randall Cobb's] injury. Just simplify some things, and maybe that'll help us get back on track."

"I don't know what that means," LaFleur told reporters on Monday.

that was Rodgers post game at the mic and MLF when told what Arod said...I have no faith in this coaching staff anymore...sure they'll win some more games this year but this era, just like the Favre era, is coming to a close...people want the Love era...good grief...

I have all of the same complaints y’all have, but my question is can this be corrected—and I say yes!
The o-line can be fixed;
Aaron Jones can be better utilized;
If Barry is fired and/or he pulls his head out of his a$$, this defense can still be excellent;
Bisaccia WILL continue to make the special teams better;
I see a free agent WR being added;
My biggest skepticism is regarding Flappy-Arms LaFleur—I see no scheme and no energy—-BUT, I do believe you can (at times) overcome your coach/coaching. We did it with Dan Devine…can we do it again?

Offensive woes start with the OL. The concern is that everyone can see it. The right-side is horrid. The inability to pick up and handle basic stunts points to bad coaching. Then inability to recognize and change out players that simply cannot perform is puzzling. At some point, you have to try the younger guys and simplify the game if need be. Hanson is too weak and Newman is bad.

MLF is overwhelmed at this point. He got AR interested and was a change in voice. I remember Love's first start last year(?) and he was unprepared for blitzing. He seems to have reached his limit. Couldn't correct ST last year in any appreciable manner. I think his position came a little too easily to this point, and now he has to solve some difficult problems. We will see what happens. Track record is not promising as he is more of a OC than HC.

“All too often missed opportunities are in plain sight.” ― Germany Kent

Not trading Rodgers last year (a once-in-a-decade opportunity) - is tantamount to managerial malpractice. Instead the "brain trust" wagered $50 m on an aged and declining QB. The team may not make the playoffs this year - which Jordan Love and a vault full of draft picks - could have also duplicated. However the team would have been 2-3 years ahead in their development had this (Love) course been taken. Instead...

My thoughts are right in alignment with you. The top brass afraid to face pain by putting it off, should have unloaded Rogers two seasons ago for great picks and rebuilt. Now they are screwed. You got an old man whose best days are ove and you can't unload him.

You have a d coach who either he is clueless or he thinks our d backs lack the talent speed and brains to play cover. Capers, Pettine and now Barry, maybe it's the players and not them. Stokes is lost amos slow and Douglas easily in the wrong place.

Ya this team is going nowhere this year. The rebuild will begin whether Murphy wants to or not. Gutt needs to go to

His Monday press conferences are mediocre too. I really think ML is not going to be able to right the ship. No fire, no emotion no sense of urgency. He seems to think it just poor execution. Isn’t he seeing his o line get manhandled?
Does he see his defense unable to stop teams in the second half? Does he see the lack of separation on his receivers? Poor throws from his QB?

Great comments and questions.
LeFluke either ignored or missed last year’s special team debacles. Will he ignore or miss the unmistakable evidence and deficiencies you, et al, have accurately communicated?

Let’s face it, for a number of years any real physical team beats the Pack. When our team gets punched in the mouth they play on their heels. We have been a finesse team for quite a while. I was at the Jets game and we played weak and passive.

Neither LaF or Barry are capable of making in game adjustments and the NFL knows it.

To be fair, this slow-motion train wreck started way back when Gutekunst used a first-rounder to get Jordan Love. THAT was a sign of the beginning of the end.

Hard to see how Jordan Love has anything to do with the current mess. I think MLF's hiring would be a much better marking point.

This is all on Micromanager Murphy. This is the team leadership he selected and made them all into his lieutenants with his Management by Committee with him sole decider, in the middle of all football operation decisions...players, coaches, draft selections, player contracts and operational spending. He makes decisions now Bob Harlan would have never touched.

When you don't give your direct reports the authority and accountability to do their jobs...they usually don't.

There's much to be said about how the Packers ended up 3-3 looking like one of the worst teams in the NFL. I go back to Gutenkunst and Murphy. This team was trending upward post 2019. They made it back to the NFC championship after back to back losing seasons. It then seemed like the Packers actually weren't that far from being a contender again. However, they got destroyed in that NFC Championship to the 49ers, so while they showed that they could get back to the playoffs there was still work left to do. And then just like that in 2020 things got weird. And every draft over the last three years along with other management decisions has led to this current team. In 2020, they drafted the controversial Love, Dillon, and Deguara with their first three picks. Dillon is the only real contributor from that draft. Some other guys include Jon Runyan, Jake Hanson, and Vernon Scott. Vernon Scott isn't even on the team anymore along with some other guys.

2021 was another ho hum draft. Gutenkunst got another decent corner with Stokes. But then things quickly fall off from there. Meyers was drafted in the second round. He's okay. Then Amari Rodgers in the third round who was instantly at the bottom of the roster and one of the worst receivers on the team now. This draft also got us Royce Newman who is one of the worst lineman on the team. Then there are some other guys you occasionally see like Jean Charles.

2022 is still out in the open but based on current play I think this is another poor draft although probably better than the last two years. It was a great draft on paper. They got a linebacker and a defensive end along with an athletic wide receiver which were all needs. But the problem is that Walker and Wyatt have shown almost nothing so far. And Watson is a bust for this year. I don't want to hear about how he might be good in the future. Watson was also a project player and the Packers should've never drafted him for that reason alone no matter how fast he was. It was just another questionable decision that had little chance of working out. Doubs looks okay too but I don't see anything to get excited about. He has 2 tds!

So overall, the Packers have had three terrible drafts. Out of all the players they selected I would say Dillon and Stokes are actually good players. So maybe a few good players? Now look at who they lost over the last three off seasons. Linsley, Zadarios Smith, Billy Turner, Adams, Scantling, Williams, Bulaga, Sullivan, King, etc. They haven't drafted any player that was as good as someone they lost except Stokes who is better than Kevin King.

Then there are other guys whose role makes no sense on the team like Deguara. He was a high draft pick and gets two passes a game. I don't know if he's even good or bad because he never gets to play. Love of course sits on the bench. So the Packers go into the 2020 NFC Championship game getting no help from their top draft picks, while the Buccaneers reload during the off season, and then everyone wonders why the Packers lost or wants to blame the refs.

Gutenkunst does nothing to prepare for Adams contract ending except tag and trade, and then draft a bust project player. They should've been drafting receivers in the 2020 draft. Then someone would've been ready for Adams leaving this year. And then it would've made sense to re-sign Rodgers to a new contract, unlike now when all the receivers left except Lazard and Cobb, and they're starting over from scratch. What!

Granted the draftees arent stellar but the team has had salary cap issues going “all in”. Zadarius, MVS for example were cap casualties. The teams that are contenders do not tie up a quarter of the cap in one player

Random thoughts:
I traded Rodgers, drafted Creed Humphrey over Myers and Devin Lloyd over Walker. Yay me. But that means zero right now.

If I could have three weeks to retrain/practice with this current group, I’d go Bakhtiari-Runyon-Jenkins-Myers-Nijman. Jenkins was a center prospect before the draft, and Myers is more of a guard than a center in my opinion.

I agree that LaFleur is starting to feel like an OC not a head coach. There is a lack of perceived intensity —gravitas maybe— and that’s important in a leader during adversity. The Packers also lack it in the players; I really hope we draft a leader one of these days…

As far as Toure goes, I assume he is having difficulty with learning the complexity of pro WR duties and is a poor blocker, but I’d like to see him tried as a returner.

Newman struggled with stunts last year and is continuing to struggle with them. The problem is we don’t have a better player to plug in; all the other prospects are similar but with even less experience. Unless we pick up a vet, we’re pretty screwed there.

Here’s the bad thing… we’re in the mediocre part right now (3-3). Maybe the high water mark will be 4-3 IF the best Washington..
After that we will not see mediocre anymore. Straight down the crapper as we will be facing talented, hungry playoff bound teams.
You can’t blow two number 1 seeds and not make necessary changes. Serious contenders DONT HIRE JOE BARRY as a DC. When Martindale was available and we didn’t grab him (or Zimmer) I knew we were not serious about winning. ML does not field tough aggressive teams. He will not be hired by anyone after GB. Barry is done as a DC. Maybe even as a linebackers coach as Campbell and Walker look awful.
Bisaccia took a horrible ST unit and made them respectable.. ( except vs the Jets) . He was a known commodity. So was Barry, only Barry was known for incompetence.
Gutekunst is probably not the guy to rebuild this franchise. I don’t know who is, but maybe the executive board should can Murphy and start over . Cherry pick some good organizations ( like Seattle did to us in the 90s) and rebuild. I’m 64 and can’t do another disappointing 30 year stretch.

The best thing that could happen is for the share holders to go to tell the bone heads that are running this team it is time TO SHIT OR GET OFF THE POT and do not let the door hit you where the good lord split you and the executive board to hire Shawn Payton and put all the primidone's on notice we would rather flus this season down the shitter and rebuild than put up with their lack off efferent the door that let you in will let you out

Do well? Nothing that is worth watching or will lead to playoff success by any measure or definition.
