Three 2024 Draft Picks Who Need To Step Up in 2025
By Dan Saia

The Green Bay Packers are entering the 2025 offseason with 46 total players coming back under contract, eight draft picks and $42.14 million in cap space at the time of this writing. While Brian Gutekunst and Co are surely going to use those eight picks and amble cap space to make a splash move this is still the Green Bay Packers we are talking about. This team’s culture is steeped in draft and develop with a heavy emphasis on the develop. They want their homegrown players to grow into the players they were projected to became and generally they are given every opportunity to do so. As likely one of the youngest teams in football again, they will need some significant improvement from recent draft picks in order to reach that next step. These are 3 players the Packers need to step up in 2025
MarShawn Lloyd
Lloyd, the teams 3rd round pick from a year ago had an injury-riddled rookie season to say the list. After battling hip, ankle and appendicitis injuries he managed to only get on the field for one game and six total carries. The Packers were excited about his home-run ability and how he fit in the offense as a complement to starter Josh Jacobs. What I imagine will be a mostly returning group of skill players-absent Christian Watson- the Packers offense will need as many playmakers as they can get.
Lloyd’s rare combination of burst, speed and power will be a welcome addition. While he wont be able to effect teams down the field to make up for Watson absence, he can help keep defenses honest when he spells Jacobs, helping to open more of those opportunities for other receivers. We might even see more two back sets with him and Jacobs on the field at the same time. Let’s hope he can stay healthy long enough to have an impact in 2025.
Jordan Morgan
Green Bay’s 2024 first round pick also battled injuries during his rookie season. He suffered a shoulder injury during training camp that never really seemed to heal. He re-injured it during week 2 (oddly the only game MarShawn Llyod played in 2024) and never really seemed to recover. He managed to play in six total games with one start and he logged 186 snaps, mostly as a rotational option with Sean Rhyan.
While he never seemed to have a starting spot available too him last year, this pick always screamed 2025 to me. Sean Rhyan was slotted into the started right guard spot and Rasheed Walker was coming off a very impressive 2023 season at left tackle. It didn’t seem to make much sense to replace two young players who were playing well. The plan to me was also wait until this off-season and allow center Josh Meyers to leave in free agency. Allowing Meyers to leave and sliding either Elgton Jenkins or Rhyan to center gives Morgan the opportunity to play either guard spot. There is also the possibility that if the Packers re-sign Meyers, we could see Morgan compete heads up with Walker for the left tackle position. Walker is entering the final year of his deal as well. Morgan stepping up could help make that an easy decision as to sign Walker long term of not. While he was a tackle in college, the Packers love to tackle college tackles and turn them into high level guards in the NFL. Either way, Jordan Morgan is going to factor heavily into the 2025 Packers offensive line plans.
Ty’ron Hopper
Perhaps the most forgotten Packers draft pick of the 2024 draft. Hopper played a fairly significant role on special teams, logging 48% of the snaps for Rich Bisaccia’s units. However, he was never able to make it on the field on defense. He was on the field for 18 total snaps, good for 1.65%. That’s the lowest of all players who spent the entire season on the active roster. It was curious why he couldn’t get on the field in any capacity considering the team eased in Edgerrin Cooper and the up and down play of Quay Walker. Both of them also dealt with injuries at various points and there was still no sign of Hopper.
Linebacker depth is going to be a big an area of focus for Gutekunst this offseason. Jeff Hafley’s unit is losing over 1,200 combined snaps from Isaiah McDuffie and Eric Wilson who are both free agents. It’s likely they bring one of them back, I have a hard time seeing both coming back due to age and the team just investing a 3rd round pick in a linebacker last year. That’s a high pick for a strictly special teams player, so its likely time we Hopper see the field on defense. Even if the team brings back McDuffie or Wilson, we are likely one injury away from Hopper having to play serious snaps. Let’s hope we aren’t adding Hopper’s name to the litany of wasted Packers 3rd round picks.
As the old adage goes, you have to give a draft a few years to be able to give it a fair grade. Players mature and develop over time. Not everyone is going to come out firing on all cylinders and have a major impact like an Edgerrin Cooper or an Evan Williams. Fans of a a team like Green Bay who relies heavily on their draft picks making an impact, its almost a pastime that we are quick to label a player a bust (think 2015 Davante Adams). While each of the 3 players mentioned here have a reason for their low impact rookie seasons, It’s nevertheless an important sophomore season coming up for each of time. Whiffing on three top 100 picks can be detrimental to a draft and develop organization such as the Packers, 2025 is time for each of them to step up and prove the Packers right.

I hope that Llyod's hip injury heals completely and does not slow him down or decrease his strength.
If they do not keep Meyers I would rather see Rhyan move to center or Monk moved up. I want Jenkins to stay at guard.

Yes, it seems late in Jenkins' career for him to be switching positions. They should be able to find another center and keep Jenkins at left guard.

I think our "best 5," until proven differently:
Rasheed Walker competing with Jordan Morgan for LT, possibly both sharing snaps
Jenkins LG
Monk competing with a rookie for C, assuming Meyers will be too expensive to keep. Keeping him and having 3 to compete for C would be better.
Rhyan competing with a rookie for RG
Zach Tom at RT.
Even with that we need depth! Cheap backup grade veteran(s) seem like a good idea, but not what Gutey seems to be inclined to do.
I'd like to see Marshawn Lloyd be the returner, both kicks and punts. Assuming #25 still wants to be done with all that. Saying "he needs to step up" seems beyond odd to me. What he needs to do is demonstrate that fumbling issues are a thing of the past. Then breaking free with the ball. Returning gives him ample opportunity for both. Emmanuel Wilson and our newer RB both played surprisingly well, Lloyd competing for RB4 just seems strange. As depth, maybe he'd still need to be called on but obviously we're hoping everybody avoids injury. Take the risk away from #11 returning and Lloyd adds value.

Of these three, Jordan Morgan is far and away the one who is likely to be important. He should be on the field for every offensive snap, and he should be a pretty good guard. Tackle is not out of the question, especially if there is an injury.
As much as I was excited by the Marshawn Lloyd pick, it's hard to envision a big role for him next season. Josh Jacobs is a workhorse who does not want to come off the field, and Emmanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks were both really good backups. The team is already very run-oriented, so it could be a challenge to squeeze Lloyd into the rotation. It doesn't help that his pass blocking is a work in progress. He will need to work on that this summer.
Ty'Ron Hopper looked good in the preseason. I would love to see him in that #3 LB spot on run downs. Either McDuffie or Wilson will likely be gone, which should open things up for him.

I agree that they will keep McDuffie or Wilson. I am not sure which is the better player to keep. I believe it will come down to whoever is better on STs.

I've read that McDuffie could get decent money to start for another team. If that happens, they should hang onto Wilson. As an older player, he will probably not be wanted by any other teams, and he's been a good special teamer and backup LB for the Packers.
If nobody else wants McDuffie, they will have a decision to make. They should not keep both of them unless Hopper is looking like a bust, which I hope is not the case.

We have too many good LBs so we have to cut good ones?!?
I think keeping both is a better idea, it just might not fit within the cap.

With the increase in cap, not accounted for in the article, it's possible Gutey keeps both?

"Whiffing on 3 top 100 picks can be detrimental to a draft and develop organization like the Packers, so 2025 is the time for each of them to step up and prove the Packers right."
Well, two of the 2024 players were significantly bogged down by injuries, so they probably can step up if they can stay healthy. As far as Hopper goes, either the coaching staff was afraid he would be completely lost out there or they might have been uncomfortable with at least two rookie linebackers out there at the same time.
The theme of this article could also have been easily applied to the first two picks of the 2023 draft; especially Van Ness, who must be feeling some pressure to prove the Packers right since we rarely get the opportunity to select in the top half of the first round.

So we'd like 3 guys we took in the Top 100 last year to play better there second year than they did as rookies.
If Marshawn Lloyd has much of an impact this year on offense, it'll be because Jacobs & Wilson are off the field. I'm not wishing for that. My best hope for Lloyd is that he stays healthy enough to practice and that he'd get some....SOME...action. Not that much.
Hopper saw almost no action as a rookie. The guys ahead of him stayed healthy and played well. Bullard and Cooper look superduper. If he stays on the field this year he's a big part of a good defense. Truthfully, if we keep McDuffie and Wilson for about $8M (combined), then this is one of the strongest linebacker units I can ever remember the team having.
Morgan missed a lot of time. OK, Bias Alert, he's not the guy I wanted in the draft, or even the lineman I wanted. I do think he's one of our best 5 linemen, and that his best position is LT, and that the biggest area he needs to improve is his availability, because when he's on the field, he's done pretty well.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Two guys not on this list are the safeties, Evan Williams and Kitan Oladapo. Williams played a bunch, and if he improves on last year, we're going to look really good at safety. KO had 68 snaps last year on defense in three games.
I think we're going to see a guy who's technically a Safety playing a lot of the traditional nickel back spot, meaning essentially we'll be playing quite a few 3 Safety looks, and it looks to me like we have the horses to pull it off.

D would have been much stronger if in the 1st we took Cooper DeJean or Brandon Fiske. With E. Cooper at ILB and Williams at safety. If and buts were.......................... Oh what a defense we would have.
