The Packers Kicking Situation Remains Unsettled

The old cliché in the NFL is if you have two quarterbacks, you have none. That may be even more so of kickers, a position most teams only carry one of on their final 53-man rosters. Right now, the Packers are carrying three kickers in Anders Carlson, Greg Joseph, and Jack Podlesny. As of now, the team is still uncertain which of the three will win the job, or whether they’ll need to bring in another candidate.

Carlson remains the player the front office would like to see capture the job. The Packers used a sixth-round pick on the former Auburn star. They were excited by his strong leg. In addition, special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia had worked with Carlson’s brother, Daniel, with the Raiders and helped mold Daniel into an All-Pro kicker after he had a shaky start to his career.

However, Carlson suffered through an inconsistent rookie season with Green Bay. He led the NFL in missed kicks, including six missed field goals and five blown extra points.

Carlson was streaky. In training camp and the preseason, he struggled. Early in the regular season, he had a strong start, making all 15 of his extra point tries in the team’s first nine games while connecting on 11-of-13 field goals.

Late in the season when the Packers offense got more consistent, Carlson struggled. That continued into the postseason where he missed an extra point against the Cowboys and a costly field goal in the playoff loss to the 49ers.

Bisaccia was asked about Carlson’s response to his struggles as a rookie. “I just think his response has been [to] work,” he replied. “It was that way during the year last year. He went through some of the ebbs and flows of kicks. And I think he’s really been the same way. He’s come back a little bit stronger in the offseason than I think he was a year ago.

The Packers signed Podlesny soon after their playoff loss in response to Carlson’s struggles. The Georgia alum lacks the arm strength that Carlson has but was more consistent than Carlson in college. He was not drafted last year but signed with the Vikings shortly after the draft. Minnesota released him in training camp.

Joseph has the most NFL experience of any of the three kickers presently on the roster. He broke into the NFL with the Cleveland Browns in 2018. One year later, played two games for the Tennessee Titans and made all nine of his extra point attempts.

For the last three seasons, the former Florida Atlantic star kicked for the Minnesota Vikings. He made 82.2 percent of his field goal tries and 90.3 percent of his extra point attempts. He’s been perfect in the playoffs, making two field goals and 12 extra points in four postseason contests.

The Packers coaching staff seems uncertain who the kicker will be. Bisaccia told reporters earlier this month, “I don’t know the answer to that,” he said when asked if the team would still carry three kickers when training camp starts in July. “It might be those three. It might be three other ones. I don’t know. It might be six.”

He then added, “We’re appreciative of Brian getting it to the point where it’s at right now, having a three-man competition,” Bisaccia continued. “We’ll see how long we can keep that going. There’s some things going on in a bunch of different leagues, so we’re going to keep investigating to try to end up with the best player we possibly can.”

That is hardly a ringing endorsement of the kickers currently on the roster.

It remains unclear whether the team will take all three kickers into training camp. Usually, teams enter camp with two players competing at the position. It’s possible the team could release one of the three after OTAs and mandatory minicamp. It’s also possible the three-way battle could continue into training camp or that the team could bring in some new candidates.

Either way, Gutekunst and Bisaccia have a little more than three months to settle on a kicker. Until then, the competition continues.

There’s been no time to resolve anything yet. Whether it’s 2 or 3 in camp or even who those 2 or 3 may be has yet to play out. All we know is that there’s at least a genuine 2 and perhaps 3 way competition over the summer.

You don't know that.

I also HOPE for that outcome, because it would mean he works through his difficulties, and gives everyone reason to believe he will develop into the franchise kicker for maybe 20 years barring injury.

“Or maybe three other guys in here”…RB. Is he hinting at that dude in the UFL that’s tearing it up? Has hit a few 60+ yarders?

It's a notably different attitude compared to last year, when the kicking job was handed to Anders Carlson with no real competition. Like most fans, I thought it was a bad idea. I guess the Packers thought highly enough of Carlson that they were willing to give him a one-year grace period. That's over now. It's sink or swim.

I apologize if I'm missing an inside joke here, but 'The Georgia alum lacks the arm strength that Carlson has' seemed odd.

There are a few typos in the article. I think this is one. They need a good editor who can catch these things.

MNPF. you are right about that. The third line contains, "...uncertain which of the tree will win the job" instead of "three" and the typos persist throughout the article.

It kind of goes without saying that the long snapper and holder, not to mention the weather, are all key in the kicking game...not a mention in the article surprised me? In addition, I keep reading how strong Carlson's leg is however, I didn't see many kick-offs go flying 5 yards into the end zone? Does Anders have great hang time...would have liked that info too?? Article needs a little re-work...

Very strong leg, just can't kick extra points, how many Playoff games are won by 3 points or less. Guy was a train wreck last year. Offense had to alter their game plan because of it.

Rory, Carlson kicked off the way his boss told him to. Yes, Carlson has a BOOMING strong leg. After preseason and before week 1, they messed with his mechanics; they had him slow down his kicking motion, trying to gain accuracy at the expense of power. To some extent that worked. It's not surprising that it didn't result in consistent production for an entire season.

Whatever he's been able to do to put all the pieces back together in the off season, I guess we'll find out?

Carlson was Rich's fair haired boy. He wanted him and Gutey drafted him. Carlson has talent, but there are many kickers who could have replicated and surpassed his rookie season. Two of them are already on the team. I would not be surprised auditions from additional kickers happen this summer.

After last season, Rich knows Carlson is part of the reason his STs regressed after the incremental improvements seen in 2022.

He's the Assistant HC (what does that mean?) and is very highly paid. Right now I would say Rich is highly overpaid and I believe knows his seat is glowing red.

"The Packers signed Podlesny soon after their playoff loss in response to Carlson’s struggles."

This is good coaching. It's a little thing, but it is a little bit more of a push for Carlson to take the full off season to work and improve.

In fairness Podlesny was very consistent on extra points with a 98.9% success as well as field goals of less than 40 yards (almost automatic) However, his stats dropped on the longer kicks. So, yes his leg strength may be an issue, That said in his last game at the Peach bowl he kicked a game winning field goal of 53 yards with three seconds left. He was also voted SEC special teams player of the year. So, yes let's see how he has developed. I think he will be an excellent young kicker to compete with Carlson who was sadly a bit of a disappointment last year.

Please, let's not compare college extra points (20 yards) to NFL extra points (33 yards). I agree that Podlesny is a good kicker to bring in to compete for the job, though.

I didn't like the premise that Carleson was drafted on - Rich B coached up his brother, so he can do it again with the other brother? He was inconsistent in college so Rich will make him more consistent in the pros? And I didn't see much evidence of a strong leg either. I felt that this was more of an egotistical pick than an objective one. And Rick's STs paid the price last year. This is an important position that cost us a playoff game last season. I also would like to see consistency over leg strength in our kicker. Let the games begin!

You don't see much evidence of a strong leg because you are in Canada and have never seen him kick.

I'd be surprised if he couldn't kick it 150 yards, and I'm dead serious. The meaningful question is after screwing with his mechanics so much, can he put the pieces back together? Some people never do.

Having competition ready to go is infinitely better than banking on him being able to recover from his injury, which is still the source of these woes.

In this case, unsettled is good! Legitimate competition, and may the best man win. (And please, at least have a backup kicker on the PS this season!?!)

Remember 2012 when everyone wanted to run Mason Crosby out of town on a rail? Yeah. Me too.

The guy has talent. No, he should not have been drafted. But you have to ride with him unless someone clearly beats him in camp, which I doubt.
