Packers Vs. Broncos - 3 Plays That Make You Go Hmmm
Jersey Al picks out three thought-provoking plays from the Packers' last game.
By JerseyAl

After re-watching the Packers game, here are three plays that made me go hmmm, for various reasons. In general, I either focus on a theme, more nuanced observations, or just things I didn't notice watching live. These can be but are less likely to be "highlight" plays. I present these to you with a short explanation why I picked them and then let you readers discuss the plays.
Back Shoulder - Something that has been on my mind and I've been lamenting about is the absence of the back shoulder throw in the Packers' offense. Perhaps I'm just spoiled having watched Aaron Rodgers execute the play to perfection time and time again, but I'd sure like to see it return in some form to the offense. It's a demoralizing backbreaker of a play - the defender thinks he has perfect coverage and then suddenly he doesn't. Despite his smaller stature, I do think Golden could be a good candidate to combine with Love and make it work. Golden tracks the ball really well and has the best pure hands on the team, able to pluck the ball at any angle with only his hands. Here's a beauty of an example:
Not interference - I checked in on twitter last night and my timeline was inundated with Broncos fans complaining about this interference call. The guy in this tweet actually calls it textbook coverage and teach tape. Am I just being a homer or is Moss not restricting his arm and grabbing it twice as they run over 15 yards together? From the NFL Rulebook: It is pass interference by either team when any act by a player more than one yard beyond the line of scrimmage significantly hinders an eligible player’s opportunity to catch the ball. Does not limiting Golden to only having one hand/arm available to catch the ball hinder him significantly? I'm thinking Broncos fans are just hyper-sensitive to the volume of interference penalties that have been called on Moss this year. Or am I wrong?
I mean this is textbook coverage. This is actual teach tape. How insane. https://t.co/FFV5oGiqjG

Amateur Hour - Am I just imagining it or do the Packers seemingly wait for key plays to do stupid things on the field? Third and three from the 8 yard line. Stop them and you hold the Broncos to a field goal. The result of the play is just that - a big red zone stop on third down. But wait, here comes Kingsley Enagbare rushing onto the field after the snap and gets called for a penalty that gives the Broncos a first down inside the five and a subsequent touchdown. If that wasn't bad enough, the Packers already had eleven players out there, so who sent Enagbare in? And if that wasn't bad enough, what I didn't notice originally was that Nate Hobbs comes running onto the field as the Broncos break the huddle and obviously doesn't know what the defensive call is and has to confer with Nixon to figure out what he's supposed to do. Are we not a professional football team?

Play 2: Sorry, I don't agree with the refs on this one--it should have been a no call. Technically the defender may be guilty of a restriction of the receiver's arm, but it's not flagrant and the arm isn't being pulled or jerked backwards. Moss also had superior position and had his head turned around. DBs have a tough enough time out there and you have to give them a fair chance to do their job. Besides, penalties could probably be called on most plays on both sides if you went strictly by the book; for instance, there's usually some kind of offensive holding going on, but only the most obvious are going to get called.
Play 1: Golden IS a good candidate for Love to make a lot of things work. It's a shame they got started so late. Not to worry, Golden will be a featured part of the passing offense more and more.

Play 2: the other camera angle showed him grabbing Golden's wrist/forearm. He isn't pulling it back, but he is impeding Golden's ability to reach for the ball.

Seems clear.
Maybe the PI rule now is the DB must be impeding both arms?

Your summarization of play 2 is so off base for play 2 it is hilarious . Thank god you are not a referee in the NFL . They are bad enough .

So the WR is only allowed one arm/hand to catch the ball? Interesting.

My hate for the Broncos is unhealthy, but I must agree with Split per the PI.
Moss is a penalty machine but not this time.
But…bronco fans are some of the biggest whiners on the planet. They boo every call against them no matter how blatant. …and their stupid “incomplete” chant is the dumbest ever conceived.
Geez I hate that team.

"Superior position?" He has desperately grasping at Golden because he couldn't keep up with him.

That Moss PI was obvious in real time. Moss earned that penalty by holding the receiver’s arm . Pay no heed to the whiny 12 year old Denver fans complaining that not all calls went their way.

Barut—Jersey Al, I’ve changed my mind—PI it is.

What I'd like to see is Golden ripping his arm away instead of just sort of waving it, and reaching up with both hands and catching the ball. If he isn't sort of pushing off, he could be running away from defenders, and I've seen him do this repeatedly.

We'll see what happens, but with a below average OL, below average cornerbacks and the loss of Micah it's hard to see a playoff win let alone a Super Bowl. Next year's offensive line is Zach Tom, Aaron Banks (because we're stuck with his contract), and then what? Is Belton going to be good, and at what position?. We know Morgan can't play guard or right tackle, so I'm not overly confident he can be our LT. We need upgrades at Def. tackle, pass rusher, 2 cornerbacks. Well, this is a depressing post. Micah's injury has made me grumpy.

L-R: Morgan, Banks, Rhyan/FA/DP, Belton, Tom.

There was an earlier pass to Golden that looked a lot like the Wicks tipped-ball INT where Golden reaches back and snatches the ball. Really nice. As for the back-shoulder throw, the timing and accuracy required on those needs to be top notch. ARod was a precision passer and the back-shoulder stuff was right up his alley. That's really not Love's game...at least, not yet.
If the Moss play isn't DPI then it just as easily could've been illegal contact/defensive holding.

Play one...Totally agree Al...I'm for ANYTHING that gets Golden more involved. Love has really improved his accuracy and I think they could be a second coming of Rodgers to Nelson back shoulder!
Play two...That's pass interference ALL DAY LONG. The dude in Denver is a wanker. He KNOWS that Packers had that ass!
Play three... It wouldn't be a bone crushing loss without a BONEHEADED play Al! It goes with the territory of gut wrenching losses as a Packers fan. There's ALWAYS a boneheaded play or play call.

"Does not limiting Golden to only having one hand/arm available to catch the ball hinder him significantly?"
Clearly seemed that way to me. I don't know what PI is anymore. Or holding. Or the constant intragame committee meetings of officials to make decisions.
As for Amateur Hour...it was! Game of edges. Can't self inflict.
Just beat the bares.

Prior to one of the early field goals, Wicks was blown off his feet at the goal line. First-and-goal from the one.

My Observations
Play 1... Great catch Golden, but not only does Wilson run into the backs of his own blockers, he surely cannot pass block either.
Play 2.. an obvious hold, no contact past the five yard line.
Play 3.. Hobbs in late does not know the defence and who to cover. Then he gets hurt after hitting the ground and tumbling trying to cover his receiver !
As I said in my last post.. hitting the ground is part of football you are supposed to be conditioned and trained to handle that yet I am constantly watching Packer players who struggle to get up after routine plays or tackles then wave to come of for a substitute or worse get knocked out of the game? How soft are the practices up there in GB ( is the whole roster going to be on the injury report before the Bears next week )

I think if you stop the receiver from trying to raise his arm to catch, that's PI. I'd call that 20 times out of 20.
The clusterhump at the goal line is just the thing that happens when injuries occur and rotations get changed and all of a sudden you've got confusion. I don't recall this happening much this season.
The back shoulder throw to Golden was real welcome. A big time catch in a big time game....hopefully we'll see more of that.

My rival golf buddy and devoted bronco fan texted me immediately following the PI call—whining—whining.
I told him not to worry—the Walton-Penner-Condoleezza Rice officiating crew would certainly make up for it.
I figure the officials must have missed the hand signals from their private box to wave off the PI.
I never use the F-word, but “F” the Broncos, their rich owners, their Secretary of State-politician minority owner, their cheerleaders, and their bounty hunter coach.
Go Packers!!!
…I know, my hate for the Broncos is unhealthy. God forgive me.

The PI was a chicken poop call and should have been a no call. If the defender was Kaisean Nixon everyone would be pissing and moaning that the refs hate the Packers and should be fired.
And yes, the Packers commit stupid penalties all the time but seem to save their stupidest for big moments.

Come on now. We all know Musgrave isn't going to break a tackle and force his way into the endzone.

Musgrave may catch the ball but he’s going to fall over soon after. No way he would get in the end zone.
