Packers Snap Counts: Week 15 Vs. The Seahawks

The Packers dismiss the Seahawks in Seattle.

The Packers did not elevate anyone from the practice squad.  Bullard and Alexander were inactive due to injury.  Monk and Heath were healthy scratches.  Malik Willis did not play.

OFFENSIVE LINE:

Player Snaps % ST
Walker 64 100 6/21%
Tom 64 100 6/21%
Jenkins 64 100
Myers 64 100
Rhyan 64 84 6/21%
Telfort     6/21%
Glover     6/21%
Dillard     6/21%

The offensive line did a good job pass blocking.  They allowed 6 quarterback hits but no sacks.  Love had enough time in general, though not ample time.  The run blocking was pretty good.  Jacobs gained 73 yards on 14 carries in the first half, good for a 5.21-yard average and a touchdown.  The line got some movement at times which allowed Myers and others to get to the second level.  The Packers slammed Jacobs into 7 and 8-man boxes in the second half, during which Jacobs gained another 21 yards on 12 additional carries to drop his average for the game to 3.62-yards per carry.  For the game, the Packers gained 140 rushing yards on 34 carries for a 4.1-yard average.  Seattle came into the game 22nd in the league against the run at 127.5 yards per game.  Twice when the Packers needed to gain 1 or 2 yards, they could not get any push.

QUARTERBACKS:

Player Snaps % ST
Love 64 100
Willis DNP

Love completed 20 of 27 (74.07%) for 229 yards with 2 touchdowns and no interceptions.  He finished with a 123.8 passer rating.  He rushed once for 4 yards.  Love made a couple of very good throws including a short pass to Watson at his knees to convert a third down opportunity and a touchdown to Doubs near the end of the game.  He did under throw a couple of passes and was inaccurate on several other throws.  I counted 2 drops.

RUNNING BACKS:

Players Snaps % STs
Jacobs 48 75
Brooks 16 25 14/48%
Wilson 6 9

The Packers rode Josh Jacobs who finished with 94 yards on 26 carries.  He also caught all 4 of his targets for 42 yards, including 2 receptions on the opening touchdown drive.  Jacobs again ran hard.  He made a tackler miss and broke a tackle on the same run.  Unlike previous years when Aaron Jones would alternate series, Jacobs game out just for a couple of snaps and then was put right back in again.  Emanuel Wilson gained 9 yards on 3 carries and Brooks gained 6 yards on his only carry.  Brooks also caught a pass for 9 yards to convert a third down.

TIGHT ENDS:

Player Snaps % ST
Kraft 57 89 5/17%
Sims 16 25 5/17%
Fitzpatrick 9 14 4/14%

Kraft caught both of his targets for 34 yards, all in the first half.  He was shut out in the second half.  Kraft and Sims, after not blocking well against Detroit, rebounded in Seattle, though Kraft missed at least one.  Sims had no targets.  Kraft caught a 26-yard pass to convert a third and long that also got the Packers out of the shadow of their own end zone.

WIDE RECEIVERS:

Player Snaps % ST
Watson 50 78
Doubs 48 75
Reed 38 59 6/21%
Wicks 30 47
Melton 2 3 10/34%

Watson caught 3 of 6 pass to lead the Packers with 56 receiving yards.  He also drew a long pass interference penalty.  He had a drop.  Doubs caught 3 of 5 targets for 40 yards and 2 touchdowns, one of which was a tremendous catch.  He and Love could not connect on another pass in the end zone when they were not on the same page.  Reed caught 5 of 6 targets for 34 yards and rushed 3 times for 27 yards with a long of 13.  Wicks caught both of his targets for 14 yards.  I keep thinking that soon the production will match the talent I see in the wide receiver room.  Perhaps I am being greedy: the Packers are 7th in points scored at 27.1 per game, after all.

DEFENSIVE TACKLES:

Player Snaps % ST
Clark 32 54 1/3%
Brooks 27 46 9/31%
Wyatt 27 46
Wooden 19 32 3/10%
Slaton 12 32 9/31%

Slaton had 2 solo tackles.  He also drew a holding penalty.   The Packers were probably looking for more pass rush once they got the big lead.   Wyatt had a solo tackle and a sack.  Brooks had a solo tackle and a sack.  Clark had a solo tackle, a quarterback hit and a pass defensed.  Wooden had no statistics.  The Packers used a sack to force a punt, another sack to force Seattle to settle for a field goal, and an interception to hold Seattle to 3 points in the first half.  The Packers did not stop the Seahawks in their tracks in the first half.  Seattle gained 30 rushing yards on 7 carries (4.29-yard average) and Geno Smith was very efficient, completing 11 of 13 passes for 100 yards.  Seattle had too many negative plays - sacks, penalties and an interception.

I should note that LT Charles Cross, the 9th pick of the 2022 draft, is a very good player.  Their left guard, Laken Tomlinson, age 32, has seen better days but he can still play.  He is better than Rhyan but not as good as Jenkins.  Seattle signed Tomlinson as a street free agent and are paying him the $1.21M veteran minimum.  Seattle's starting center abruptly retired in week 11.  His replacement, a 5th round pick in the 2023 draft, played 11 snaps and was replaced by a UDFA who played 48 snaps.  Their right guard got hurt in week 11 and has not played since.  Seattle trottd out a 6th round rookie at right guard.  The right tackle is a 3rd round pick in the 2022 draft who was hurt most of 2023 and missed all but the last 4 games of this season on PUP.  He is at best average.  Sacks that came against the right side of the Seattle line should be taken in context.

DEFENSIVE ENDS:

Player Snaps % ST
Gary 29 49
Van Ness 25 42 16/55%
Enagbare 22 37 12/41%
Mosby 22 37 19/66%
Cox 20 34 10/32%

Enagbare had 5 solo tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks while working primarily against the right side of the Seattle offensive line.  It is a great game, though he did lose contain on the Seattle sweep to Charbonnet for a 24-yard touchdown to give Seattle some hope.  Gary had 2 solo tackles, a sack and a quarterback hit.  Cox had 2 solo tackles, a sack and a quarterback hit.  Van Ness had an assisted tackle and a quarterback hit.  He did bull rush Charlie Cross well several times.  Mosby had 1 assisted tackle and 1 pass defensed.  The Packers finished with 12 quarterback hits (!), 10 tackles for loss (!), and 7 sacks.  A lot of these achievements occurred in the second half.  The Packers had 2 sacks in the first half and 5 in the second half.

LINEBACKERS:

Player Snaps % ST
Er Wilson 37 63 23/79%
Cooper 34 58 8/28%
McDuffie 25 42 7/24%
Walker 22 37 1/3%
Hopper 3 5 15/52%

Edgerrin Cooper filled the stat line.  His speed jumped out.  He had 5 solo tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 2 passes defenses, and a big interception.  That is quite a day.  He even had 2 additional tackles on special teams.  Quay Walker had 3 solo tackles before he left and did not return due to an ankle injury.  McDuffie had 3 tackles (2 solo).  Hopper had 1 solo tackle and Eric Wilson had 1 assisted tackle and 2 quarterback hits.  The Packers sent the linebackers a fair amount, including on some run blitzes.  The tight ends and running backs did not hurt the Packers in the passing game.  Seattle finished with a 5.0-yard rushing average, gaining 80 yards on 16 carries.

SECONDARY:

Player Snaps % ST
Stokes 59 100 4/14%
Valentine 58 98 4/14%
McKinney 56 95 10/34%
Nixon 56 95 7/24%
Williams 56 95 6/21%
Anderson 3 5 22/76%
Olapado 3 5 4/14%
Rochell 1 2 15/52%
Ballentine     2/7%

McKinney and Williams each had 4 tackles (3 solo).  Anderson had no statistics.  Nixon had 5 tackles (3 solo) including a tackle for loss.  He also was flagged twice for holding.  The first penalty was ticky-tacky and the second might get called or it might not.  Stokes had 3 tackles (2 solo).  Valentine had 3 tackles (1 solo) and 2 passes defensed, one of which he held onto for an interception in the end zone.  Valentine should have taken a knee but he ran it out of the end zone.  He was probably trying to show the coaches why they should play him when Alexander returns.  To be fair, Stokes seemed to have a decent game, and Nixon made some tackles.  Only Smith-Njigba hurt the Packers: he caught 10 of 12 targets for 83 yards.  It looked like Geno Smith was going to play pitch and catch with his receivers who were working against a soft zone, but Seattle mistakes and some timely sacks and other negative plays derailed that option in the first half.

Quarterback Sam Howell looked clueless.  It is important to your backup get some first team reps and to have a game plan suited for the backup should he have to play.  Howell threw for 24 passing yards and took 21 yards in sacks.  Seattle has an average offense and defense.  Yes, Seattle was first in EPA/snap over the last 4 games, but they played San Francisco, the Jets, and Arizona twice.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

McManus made all 3 of his extra points and 3 short field goals.  Reed muffed a punt but he recovered it himself.  Whelan punted 4 times and was just okay, averaging 42.5 gross.

RB:  1.09

TE:  1.28

WR: 2.62

DT:  1.98

DE:  2.00

LB:  2.05

DB:  4.97

I don't think there is anything wrong with putting in a few plays for Kraft to get him going. Heaving a prayer on a free play does not count. I wonder what they do when Musgrave returns. Sims has not made it difficult to my mind: Sims' blocking is pretty bad so Musgrave's won't be much of a downgrade.

Is there some reason they only run slants to Doubs?

Jacobs averaged 1.75 yards per carry in the second half. Come on, LaFleur. I would not mind sitting Jacobs when Lloyd returns. It looks like GB is going to ride his shoulders this year and need him healthy for the playoffs.

I thought LVN played better than his stat line.

Seattle has 4 really good defensive backs in Julian Love and Knight, Witherspoon and Tariq Woolen. That's the strength of their D. Jobe is a weak link - he pla8yed 37 snaps (58%).

PFF initially gave Cooper at 95.5 grade, Valentine a 90, and TJ Slaton an 89.4. We will see if those change with more review. Cooper gave up 1 reception on 5 targets for 1 yard, per pff.

I really want Watson to become Jordy 2.0. I hope I am not seeing signs of growth just because I want to see them so badly. Might still be any of them, really.

TGR, you have found your niche in reporting the snap counts each week. The snap counts and your comments on them, add an extra layer to my appreciation of the game. Keep it up.

Seattle went to a lot of 5 man front Bear looks in the 2nd half and my biggest beef is not trying some off tackle runs in those situations. At the least try some play action and make them pay with the pass. The whole idea of putting two players in the A gaps is to dissuade the offense from running there. LaFleur was not dissuaded and the offense paid the price. When facing a Maginot Line go around it. I hope LaFleur gets questioned about that today.

What they did do is utilized jet sweeps for that same reason.

That’s sort of an end around to the point he’s making not really a generally applicable answer to the wider issue. There are more options available than between the tackles or a sweep. Perhaps that comes down to not using Wilson much and him being probably the most likely candidate active. Brooks was seemingly being used to true to shore up blocking in the second half.

I posted this in another thread but I wonder if once the game was at 20-3 that they shut the creative offensive playbook down.

MLF is a more creative coach than what we saw in the 3rd. quarter.

Jordy the Great was a rare player, and I'd be really surprised if Watson became that guy. In fact, as I have mentioned, if Watson plays near the level that a lot of us think he can,we probably can't afford to resign him.

A odd game. In the first half the OL was opening holes regularly, in the second it couldn’t buy one. That suggests the fault was with the opponents. I didn’t think the protection was particularly good either. Love however was great under pressure last night, in terms of completing plays by hanging in there and also escaping when appropriate. Probably his best game in that respect. That made our OL look a lot less bad than it was at times once we started to pass.

I do think our seizure on O in the second half could have cost us had Smith not got hurt. I share your frustration at the lack of focus on Kraft but also on Reed and traditional slot routes. We are still dialing up near laterals or predominantly deep patterns. Why? I think by later in the second half we probably should have spelled Jacobs more. Wilson looked to have fresher legs when finally put out there.

Doubs’ two scores were impressive. It’s not often a WE trucks to defenders 5 yards. Doubs is not a big WR. He wanted that. The second was just a tremendous catch on what looked like an improvised play where Doubs was intended to open space for others and then just ran a route after.

For all the griping about Stokes, I didn’t see him give up much. In the last 3 games prior he’d surrendered less than 10 yards total. He’s either doing something right or Purdy/Tua/Goff/Smith and their OCs all missed a huge opportunity. That seems unlikely. We played more aggressively in coverage last night compared to against the Lions and that seemed to pay off outside against two pretty good perimeter guys. I do think neither of the two penalties in Nixon were justified, but it was mostly away from the perimeter that Metcalf contributed.

A strange game. It’s never easy to win there, but I’m going to need to rewatch closely to better understand what lessons should be drawn from a tale of contradictory halves.

If the Packers are going to win in the playoffs they need to play 60 minutes not 30 minutes and then cruise the second half. Treat the game as the Daytona 500 and keep your foot on the gas until the game is over.

I am happy to see that MLF called running plays to start the game. The strength of the Packers offense is the run game. They need to lean on it. The defense looked very good and the rush was the main reason the defense looked good.

All they need is to clean things up and play the whole game.

It kind of grated on my nerves to watch them stuffing Jacobs into the middle time after time in the second half. Give the man a break! It was beyond the point of keeping the Seatle D honest. They were pounding him.

Almost blew the time of possession in the second half and started to wear the D out. Still think they would have won even if Geno had played the whole game but like Cheezehead72 said above, it would be nice of them to play a complete game.

It's nit-picking but it seemed much closer than the 13-30 score looks. I hope Walker and everyone else are ok. This is the time of the season where health will play the biggest role in wins and losses.

Pretty much agree on their use of Jacobs T7Steve. Seattle was playing with eight guys in the box for much of the second half (even saw nine a couple of times). LaFleur or Love need to change the play called and not attempt to batter their way through a loaded box. If the defense invites you to pass, then pass. The Packers certainly have the QB and WRs to be successful passing.

Odd play calling in the second half and very slow to adapt to a halftime change by the Seattle defense.

MLF said after (according to Spoff) that he was beating himself up for the play calling.

Wonder how much leeway Love has at the line to switch or if he's given "either/or" sets of plays to call?

Good question about Love. I would think he has enough experience to check out of bad play calls, but I don't know if he has that leeway or is confident enough to use it. Clearly didn't check out of running plays against heavy boxes versus Detroit or the second half of the Seattle game. IDK.

He visibly checked out of one play call at least, but I don’t think he’s showed that very often. Obviously there are some rpo calls where it’s either or, but that’s by design and a little different. Overall, it doesn’t look to me that he’s effectively an override play caller on a regular basis. Nor should he be, particularly this early in his career. He obviously doesn’t set the personnel groupings, which has an impact on our options.

I absolutely loved the Packers first drive and was jumping for joy when they used Jacobs in the screen game at the start of the game. GET the ball in his hands!

They have to use Kraft more and this sounds like I'm looking for things to bitch about, but that dude is going to be a top 3 TE in the entire NFL by next year...I'm with TGR on this one...FIND more ways to get him the ball.

Chris I Talk to Much Collinsworth is absolutely right...Cooper IS going to be a superstar. The entire defense is different with him on the field.

I thought the D-line pretty well dominated a less than average Seattle O-line. Seattle couldn't run the ball and Smith/Howell were under pressure on every drop back. The secondary looks a lot better when they only have to cover receivers for 3 to 4 seconds. I also loved Cooper's impact on the middle of the field pass defense. He has the speed and agility to run with backs and wide receivers and disrupt passing lanes. Now if the Pack can just get Alexander, Bullard and Walker back this defense might be able to play with the big boys.

did anyone notice how much better the D got when Walker went down? about the only thing that really angered me in this, perhaps their best game so far, was the idiotic clock management at the end of the first half. it cost 4 points. any kid in second grade on up would have done better. but oh that catch by Doubs. how nice...

I don't think your D gets better when your play caller that has played almost every play of the season and has made the most tackles on the team gets hurt. What made you say that? I think he's even better now that Cooper is back.

No. I didn’t notice a big improvement on D after Walker got hurt. Nor does the scoring suggest one. I did not notice a cratering either, but Wilson has been pretty good all year.

Our D played perhaps its best game, helped by the front getting home without blitzing. It looks like the weak opponents had flattered to deceive in terms of their supposed improvement there.

Our offense left questions despite its overall success on the night, but the D really didn’t raise any new ones except whether the rush was flattered by unexpected weakness or if we are starting to see it coming together both at DL and DE.

No real big shockers this morning. A little surprised Wooden played that much. I questioned why he was in the game when they had the Seahawks pinned against their goal line at one point, that's a time to have your best guys in and force a short field, but they had at least a two score lead the final three quarters so getting the starters reduced snaps isn't the worst thing in that situation. Other than that I didn't notice he was in the game.

Wasn't their best game vs the run but they did what they needed to do pressure wise against a below average OL.

The run D was fine in that context. Seattle have been a pass first team, came out looking to be one and were then well behind. We treated the run as an increasing afterthought, which it was. They ended up averaging 5 ypc, but it made very little difference. I think that’s underlined by the pass happy approach even after Smith went out.

Last week people complained that they didn’t keep running the ball. This week he came out running the ball and some complain he didn’t run the ball the right way. Damn, Mlf can’t win when winning. Come on enjoy the win, find the positives and quit nitpicking at everything. Let’s face it after a play is run its easy to say, “they should’ve done any number of things other than what they did, like run outside, throw the ball, why not a screen?”

My defense?

1.75 yards per carry in the 2nd half.
4 punts in the second half.
1 turnover on downs when Jacobs stuffed on 4th & 2.
5 drives with no points in the 2nd half.

I really do think this offense can find another gear. It is close to elite now!

This O is always missing components it seems. The bizarre thing is that those components show up in different games but then vanish in others. There are few things we can’t do offensively, or at least haven’t been able to. The exception is to string them together in one game seemingly. It’s as if LaFleur rations concepts each week. Perhaps that’s a tactic, but it plays a role in hot and cold performances.

I do think we are starting to see a healthy Love extend and improvise better and more wisely, with lifts the called O, as I believe it did in the second half of last year. A lot of notable plays made from extended or improvised plays recently.

Nice play on words. Actually, I think overall you're very objective with your commentary. Even thou you stated it in your column, my point wasn't at you. That said, I don't think you can contribute all what happened in the second half or what you put out there from running in the middle.

Without rewatching it, and I assume most, if not all hadn't when they commented I think its very hard to criticize Play calling, especially regarding loaded boxes compared to one series to another. Or even one play to another during a series. Mlf did call run outside run plays as well.

Let's say, the inside run worked regardless of how many in the box, who knows until you try. It's not like he kept pounding and pounding. Also, last week many were saying we gave up on the run too quickly . You can't have it both ways and be right. Some just want to complain and play arm-chair QB, which gets exhausting reading. Last week, Detroit starting run blitizing, loading the box etc...but yet Mlf gets lambasted for not keep running into it.

I have to wonder if those folks watch other games and play calls. It's hard being an OC in the NFL, the other team adjusts all the time and there are NO offensive coordinators who make the right calls all the time. BUT, it's easy after the fact to critisize their play calling.

Ok, enough with my ranting.

I wasn't complaining that they were running too much or wrong. I was complaining they kept doing it with Jacobs. He probably loved the work, but I'd like the keep some tread on hi tires. When you have two and three score leads in the second half put in the youngsters.

That OL has been pretty good recently. It gave up zero sacks the prior week against a team that had more sacks on the year than we did at that point. They also aren’t particularly unhealthy, though they obviously had issues at C, the rest of their personnel had been playing well lately.

So maybe their opponents flattered to deceive, and their OL hadn’t improved as much as they thought, but that’s not entirely obvious from their opponents rush. I think we only find out by seeing whether we can replicate the success going forward, but I don’t see a basis for writing it off as you seem to be.

After the two first quarter TDs, we didn't find the endzone again until the 4th quarter, following a turnover and a short field. Three FGs.

Very strong game, IMO. The defense had one of their best showings of the season, IMO, and the offense scored 30 for the 4th straight game. This is called peaking at the end of the season. Love did not throw any interceptions, again. I hate to say it's as simple as that, but when Love protects the ball, we win.

some pretty questionable play calling in there, some bad clock management, but 30 on the board nonetheless and another game bringing down the ppg on defense while raising them for the offense.

Detroit gave up 31 and 48 in consecutive weeks. That show is about to fold. #thatsashame

I would point out that the sack by Gary was all due to Brooks almost getting home by beating his man in the middle. Brooks should get credit for 1/2 of the sack.

don't worry. he gets a pressure. that's what he did, pressured the quarterback into a sack.

you don't get a half-sack by getting double-teamed so your teammate goes through unabated either.

Then give Gary half a sack for the Cooper sack earlier in the game because he pushed his man back into the QB, taking away the QB's escape route. Usually it takes at least two players to sack a QB, but credit goes to the one who actually tackles the QB, which makes sense.

"Edgerrin Cooper filled the stat line. His speed jumped out. He had 5 solo tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 2 passes defenses, and a big interception. That is quite a day. He even had 2 additional tackles on special teams. "

Cooper had a SACK as well! Quite a day for the rookie.

Wow, Stokes played 100% of the snaps. Things have changed since he had his snaps way reduced halfway through the season. I know he hasn't defended a pass in awhile, but he hasn't had a lot of passes thrown in his direction lately, so he must be doing something right.
